Annual On the first day of school the members chosen to be on the annual staff met sixth period to begin their daily work toward producing the yearbook. After the theme was picked and each member was assigned his job the work really started. First, class pictures were taken and then the write-ups were begun. In November the student body became aware of our progress during the subscription drive. This year 675 annuals were ordered from the publisher. During the last month everyone worked together with typewriters clacking continually into the dark of night. Hardly a day passed without more pictures being taken. The D.C.T. program, however, is not all work and no play. The club sponsors a number of social events during the school year which include parties, dances, picnics, an open house to which parents and employers are invited and the annual Employer-Employee Banquet which is a formal affair. The Key Club of Winter Haven High School, prominent throughout the Florida District of Key Club International, as well as at W.H.H.S., has achieved an enviable record of service to the school and community. Like their sponsoring organization, the Winter Haven Kiwanis Club, the Key Club is dedicated to genuine service and character development, with special emphasis on leadership and initiative. To accomplish the aim of leadership training this group of thirty-three boys undertakes a real load of projects, including sponsorship of the Annual Vocational Guidance Program, leadership Tea, Homecoming Parade, and numerous others. Although much of the success of the Key Club program can be attributed to interested Kiwanians, particularly Mr. Chester Mann, faculty advisor, most of the clubâs achievements are the result of hard work on the part of the boys, led by the capable 1957 officers Dick Johnson, president; Floyd Dean, vice president; Robert Cooper, secretary; and Roger I-aVoie, treasurer. Besides this work on the local scene, the Key Club boasts of its statewide achievement: election of Sam Clement to the office of Florida District Treasurer and his subsequent winning of the award for the most valuable member of the 1957 Florida District Board of Trustees; election of Roger LaVoie to the editorship of The Florida Key and his winning of the Key Club International District Publications Award; winning of the Florida District Oratorical Contest by Jimmy Lanier; and election of Edwin Smith as a lieutenant governor on the 1958 district board. The activities of this club speak well for the club and for the school. Although a new club in WHHS the Wheel Club has done many things to better our school. Through its service to the school the Wheel Club has well carried out its international purpose, âTo render service to the school and community, and to develop leadership, tolerance, and cooperation apiong its members.â During the 1957-58 school year the Wheel Club has undertaken many projects with success. Some of these are painting bleacher stripes in the gym, planting shrubbery on the campus, doing odd jobs around the school and sponsoring the annual game between the world famous Arkansas Travelers and the menâs faculty. This basketball game was a wonderful success and added greatly to school spirit. In February the club took an educational trip to Patrick Air Force Base to learn about its missile program. Beacon Our newest girlsâ service club in school this year, the Beacon, is sponsored by the local Business and Professional Womenâs Club. Its purpose is to act as a guiding light in showing friendship, leadership, and sportsmanship in all activities. Honesty, character, and service are stressed. The slogan, âHarbor of the three shipsâfriendship leadership, and sportsmanship,â sounds the keynote for various projects undertaken during the year. The first service rendered by the members was the selling of student identification cards. In October they assisted the Student Council with the first Parent Teacher Student Association supper. Page 110 Miss Vera Olcbcrg, president of the Winter Haven Pilot Club, presents president Tana with the Anchor Club plaque to be put in the cafeteria. The Anchor Club is a service organization sponsored by the Winter Haven Pilot Club. It is the oldest girlsâ service club in the school and has held a fine reputation for many years. This year the Anchor Club has kept its banner high and has accomplished many things to help the school and community. Among the âfirstsâ for this yearâs club are the International award, the top homecoming float, and the prize for the best Christmas decorations. Other accomplishments include second place in Devilâs Doings, a successful inter-club breakfast, and the Anchor-Key dance. At this dance the âBeauxâ were announced. These were Dick Johnson, Roger LaVoie, Mickey Trueheart, Jim Lanier, and Floyd Dean. In addition to the many honors it has won, the Anchor Club also finds time to render great service to the school. Some of its projects this year are painting of posts on the side of the campus, contributing shrubbery to improve the landscape of the school, and helping with the annual Tuberculosis drive. The members of the club also attend church together monthly and hold various money-making projects. C) V Ainât the Anchor Club âBeauxâ cute? Work! Work! Work! For the first time this year Tri-Hi-Y donated a subscription of the Lakeland Ledger to the library. The club made it easier on the studentsâ feet by donating four benches to the school. The other girlsâ service clubs were entertained at a tea given by Tri-Hi-Y at the home of Gaye Gardner. A special stress is placed not only on cultural and social accomplishments but also on the development of a pleasing personality and wholesome standards. Page 115 Spanish Club Cultivating an interest in the Latin-American countries, their customs, and their language is the purpose of the Spanish Club. This is done by having programs and activities that help members to understand their Latin-American neighbors. A great help in this objective was a visit from one of our Spanish speaking friends; Hilda Alonzo of Havana, Cuba, was made an honorary member and presented with a pin at the first meeting of the Spanish Club. An honor organization, the Spanish Club takes part in all school activities. This year their float took third place in the homecoming activities, and the Christmas decorations in the Spanish room afforded much interest and amusement to the school, as well as winning one of the prizes. Officers of the Spanish Club look over plans for the next meeting. They are Bob Butler, vice president; Jean Knorr, secretary; Nancy Rayno, treasurer; Frances Bassham, chaplain; and Fannie Race, president. During the year the club members take a number of field trips to various locations of scientific significance. The Biology Club sends representatives to the County Science Fair, the State Science Fair, and to the Florida Junior Academy of Sciences. The club is also in charge of the annual school science fair. Officers are: Nelson Pewitt, vice president; Mike Green, chaplain; Lucy Ritter, president; Pete Mazzeo, treasurer; J ulie Brooks, secretary. A highly active organization, members participate in many projects. F.H.A. Christmas cards are sold as a service and money-making project. As a part of the Homecoming activities, the girls sell Blue Devil shakers to help cheer the team. Each year members of the faculty are remembered too. In December, they are entertained by F.H.A. with a tea. Also in December a busload of F.H.A. girls who have entries in the Youth Fair, attend this event. They spend the day in Bartow touring the Fair grounds and winning ribbons and prizes. All members of the club may attend the State Fair in Tampa during the month of February. One girl is elected from the club to help with demonstrations in the Tampa Electric Booth. An outstanding event of the year is the Mother-Daughter Banquet. The daughters present their mothers with a program and delicious meal. Guest speaker for the evening is the president of the State F.H.A.
