Music is associated with everything we do. It seems natural, then, that the class should select music as the theme of the 1948 Wa Hwa Hta See, and should feature current popular songs like Ballerina Dance,” Near You,’ Civilization,” and The Lady From Twenty Nine Palms.” We hope you will recall many pleasant merories when you look over this annual. FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS Ever since Mr. Wood came to this school, when the present seniors were seventh graders, music has come to mean more and more to the students of W. H. H. S. Mr. Wood has not only fostered a greater interest in music and built up one of the best Class B Glee Clubs and Class B Bands in the state, but he has also been a friend and inspiration to many. It is, therefore, a pleasure for the Class of 48 to dedicate this annual to Mr. Roy V. Wood. ADMINISTRATION J. Milton Lewis Supervising Principal Winter Haven Schools Charles E. SPONSORS Mrs. Workizer Mrs. Copeland Looking toward the future, we, the Class of 48 boarded the Freedom Train” and gallantly approached the impressive structure of W. H. H. S. Going My Way was Pete Kalogridis’ song as he was elected president of the Freshman Class. Edwin Coleman, famous coronet soloist in Auditorium Session,” won the outstanding band award. It’s true that It’s a Long, Long Way to Tripperary, but Pete Kalogridis and Wiilo-dean Beasley made it when they won the American Legion Award. Jane, Jean, Clarence, and Pete were pages at the Jr.-Sr. Banquet, our last stop before we got off the Freedom Train.” President Pete Kalogridis, conductor of the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe, yelled, All aboard,” for a Sentimental Journey through the tenth grade. Tooting Hey Bob-a-Re-Bob” on their prize horns, Marilyn Atkinson and Paul Smith .won the Outstanding Band Student Awards. In the Merry Month of May” Jane Strickland was crowned queen of the first annual Spring Frolics. Signing, Sincerely Yours, to his essay which won first prize in a State Essay Contest, Pete yelled, Last stop, summer vacation.” Tippin In” on A Long, Long Train with a Red Caboose and Doing What Comes Naturally,” we again elected Pete Kalogridis president of the class. Pistol Pack-in Mama, Jane Strickland, held the money bag for the Student Council, and Edwin Coleman was Vice-President. Pete Kalogridis must have used some of the Old Black Magic, because he was elected Secretary of State at Boys’ State, which sent him to Boys’ Forum in Washington, D. C. With Stardust” in her eyes But Beautiful” Betty Mc-Kown was crowned Spring Frolics Queen and her gridiron hero, Clarence Peebles, was crowned King. Of course The Stars Will Remember” the Junior Play, A Case of Springtime.” Our Long, Long Train with a Red Caboose” stopped for summer repairs shortly after the long awaited Something Sentimental”; the Junior-Senior Banquet under the circus tent. Climbing on The Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” we cried Murder” as Pete Kalogridis sang, There I’ve Done It Again” when elected The Best President We Ever Had.” Oh, What It Seemed To Be” thought Edwin Coleman when he was elected president of the Student Council Association of the State of Florida. This sent him Deep In The Heart of Texas for the S. S. C. A. Convention! Pat Patton was intrusted with the Miss Smith Mrs. Wolfe job of recording the Memories in the Annual. T-e-dou-ble-n-e-double-s-double-e” sent us the mighty Jack Luna, who was captain of the football team and won the most valuable player award. With Stout Hearted Men like Peebles, J. Yarbrough, Brightwell, Wiggins, Cottingham, Conley Wilson, Touchton, Daniels, Bowen, Hancock, Von Hahmann, Rients, Smith, and B. Yarbrough, our team went down in history. As Time Goes By” the comment will remain They Say It's Wonderful : our play Two Gentlemen and Verona.” Pass That Peace Pipe was our cry as we went to the wonderful banquet given us by the Juniors. Now that June Is Busting Out All Over and our Chattanooga Choo-Choo” is Flying Home,” we, the graduating class of 1948, find many Heartaches looking back Through the Years. But now we can sing our Anniversary Song” and know How Lucky We Are.” Till Then,” M. S. Daniel R. Lathers B. Known as a service and an honor organization, the Beta Club endeavors to recognize students whose scholastic achievement has been above average, to provide the opportunity for students to lend constructive work to school projects, and to give training in leadership. During the school year 1947-1948 the club purchased a record cabinet for the library and decorated the library for Christmas. In February the club sent two delegates, Zilla Childs and Mercer Branch, to the state convention in Tallahassee. Pat recorded the ideas page by page in the ''dummy,” and the big task of getting pictures taken according to the plans began. In November the sales campaign was inaugurated. To create interest among the students, the staff revealed some of its ropes and plans in the form of a skit in assembly. After months of work the staff, with a sigh of relief, sent the final copy to the publishers and looked forward to the arrival of the 1948 Wa Hwa Ta See. Women didn't bother him until a lovely girl named Lillums came sailing into his life. Complications arose when Buddy overheard his father disclosing to his mother the loss of a great amount of money from the bank where Mr. Carhart was the head accountant. Buddy and his pals set out to solve the mystery; their first suspect was Graig Vincent, a suitor of Buddy's sister Florence. The Senior Class Presents TWO GENTLEMEN AND VERONA” Billy Kennedy, young drama critic on a vacation, stumbles upon the Red Barn players, a summer-theatre group, who mistake him for an expected talent scout from Hollywood-and proceed to go through antics of which only the stage-struck are capable. Bill is trying frantically to escape, when Verona enters, behaving in a normal manner. Besides being pretty and ambitious she is obviously interested in the wrong guy, one Clyde Colby, the epitome of self-satisfied masculinity. So Bill decides to stick around as press agent, and capture Verona's heart. The Red Barn players inconveniently run out of money about this time, and appeal to wealthy Neila, who calculatingly advances the money so they can continue, on one condition: that she have the leading roles, of course. Then the real talent scout, Mr. Sweezey, arrives at the Red Barn-only to be shanghaied into observing more hopeful talents. On the night of the real try-out, Bill kidnaps leading lady Neila so that Verona can have her opportunity; but Mr. Sweezey recognizes a least suspected player instead and Verona decides she'd rather be Bill's first-rate wife than a third-rate acrtress. During the years many events have transpired that make the memories of the band students fond ones. The band has made several hundred public appearances and has visited many Florida cities as representatives of our school and city. Seniors this year were in the seventh grade when the band was organized under Mr. Wood and as such are the first class to go completely through junior and senior high in the band. They have worked to make the band an outstanding organization in the state and their success may well be measured by the popularity of the band and band activities, wherever they appear. Outstanding among the memories of the band students for this year will be in the trip to the Miami Orange Bowl Festival, where they spent five days as guests of the Orange Bowl Commitee, appearing in two giant parades and in a special drill at the Orange Bowl. Other trips of the year include parades and concerts in Sarasota, St. Petersburg, Tampa, and other Florida cities. The officers, except Billy Hardman, are seniors and will be missed greatly by the band next year. They worked hard for the honor of being band officers, and having striven to make the band better ever since they were elected, they have set a fast pace for future officers and bandsmen to follow. Besides the concert band the Winter Haven High School has a junior band of seventy-two pieces and a beginners’ group of forty-five. The junior band has made about twenty public appearances this year and has entered the district band contest in Tampa. The Devils showed both power and speed and outplayed the visitors from the start. Winter Haven 6 Jesuit 6 The highly rated Jesuit Tigers came from Tampa only to repeat last year's outcome. Our team held the edge in first downs but just didn’t have that extra punch for points. Winter Haven 7 Arcadia 6 Arcadia was next on the schedule. The Bulldogs really pulled a surprise. The over-confident Deyils pushed the cowboys all over the field but again didn’t seem to have that extra punch. In the last quarter both teams made a touchdown; the Winter Haven score came in the last 10 seconds of the game. Winter Haven 0 Haines City 18 The Devils journeyed to Haines City and ran straight into the Hornet’s nest. The boys played a hard game all the way, but the Hornets had all the sting. Pass interceptions, fumbles, etc. finally gave the Hornets a hard earned victory. Winter Haven 13 Sarasota 20 The Devils really went to work for the first time this year in the annual Sarasota tilt. The powerful Sailors took an early (20-0) lead in the first quarter and then bogged down, as the local boys hammered one touchdown before half time and another in the third quarter and threatened all the rest of the game. Winter Haven 44 Wauchula 7 Again playing host, the Devils were strictly on the ball. The game started off with the Devils receiving the kick-off and driving for a touchdown. The rest of the game was a picnic with everyone getting a chance to play. Scores both through the air and on the ground left no doubt in anyone's mind as to the victor. Winter Haven 7 Lake Wales 13 Highlanders spoiled the Homecoming fete for Winter Haven by capitalizing on breaks which happened to come their way. On a freak 53 yard run, the Highlanders took an early lead. They then followed with a pass interception and a free 40 yard trip to W. H. goal line. The Devils made their touch down the hard way by driving inside the L. W. 5 yard line three times before going over. Winter Haven 0 Manatee 13 Manatee, the newly combined Bradenton-Paimetto team, seemed to have all the breaks in this game. The Devils kicked off, held Manatee for downs, and proceeded to march straight down to the Manatee 5 yard line, where they fumbled and lost possesion of the ball. The Manatee touchdowns came as the result of long passes. Neither team was able to get a touchdown on the ground although the Devils were in sight of the goal more than once. Winter Haven 0 Bartow 34 The Thanksgiving classic with Bartow was a hard fought game and was closer than the score indicated. The Yellow Jackets had just a little too much sting. Winter Haven 7 Plant City 32 The final game of the year against the powerful Planters of Plant City was the best game of the season as far as team spirit is concerned. The Devils, however, were handicapped with injuries. The Devils never giving up, were out played but not out fought. The games lost, with the exception of a very few, were by close margins; and more than once, exciting overtimes were the deciding factor. In the South Florida Conference Tournament the Devils upset second seeded Plant City by a score of 52 20. In the second game, however, they lost by a close score, 34-56, after an exciting overtime. In the District Tournament, the Devils defeated the Ft. Meade Miner 48-33 and then lost to the second seeded Mulberry team 22-24.
