AND FLUNKED, AND PASSED, AND NOW WE GRADUATE AT LAST. In the fall of '38, we„ a group of carefree boys and girl entered the freshman class of Winter Haven High School. Being onfaanliar with the high school routiner we did not take any great active part in the school life. Our main accomplishment during the year was the election of class officers, and following the tradition of the school several members of the class were chosen to act as pages at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. As we entered our second year of high school, we were better acquainted with Winter Haven High School and therefore took more interest in the school activities. After the election of officers, the class made plans for the Sophomore-Senior picnic which was to be held in the spring. The Imps elected Implets from our class to help them cheer our teams on tc victory. For the first time in the history of the school Student Bo Jy officers were elected at a general election; the vice-president and treasurer being chosen from the sophomore class. Our junior year brought to us more change for recognition in school life through the various organizations and activities. Mary of the boys from the class took part in the manor sport --football, basketball, baseball, and track, while many of the girls were chosen as Imps. Our basketball team was particularly outstanding because it defeated Bartow to win the South Florida Conference championship. Many members of the class were further active by becoming members of the Honor Society and the English Club and by taking part in the junior play, China Boy . Led by our c' ass officers, we entertained the retiring seniors whose places we were to take the next year, at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Student body officers elected from our class were president, and secretary, and we elected delegates tc represent the school at Boysr State. As we became seniors, we at last became leader : in the school. Sup ported by the Imp squad., composed largely of senior girls, boys of the class helped our football team to become Polk County Champions Leading members of the class were inducted into the Honor Society and the newly or gar. i 7. 1 Key Club, and several special awards were presented to outstanding seniors. •. + COMMENCEMENTEXERCISES' COMMENCEMENT SERMON WAS DELIVERED BY PLACE DATE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS WAS DELIVERED BY PLACE DATE ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I KJTOGRA A I ' Jf JUNIOR-SENIOR Banquet PLACE DATE TOASTMASTER ADDRESSES I WENT WITH COMMENTS MOST POPULAR V- i -ACTIVITIES itt A RECORD OF THE PART THAT WINTER HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL HAS PLAYED IN THE NATIONAL DEFENSE PROGRAM DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 1941-42. Just as in years before, we, the senior class of 1942r had always eagerly anticipated the publication of our high school annual. Until December 7. 1941 plans were being made to carry out this tradition, but with Pearl Harbor came a complete change in our school life. So that we might do our part in the war effort, we established First Aid and boyj began drills in the physical education classes. Every member of the school heartily responded to a call for money from the American Red Cross and the Penny Serenade, ar. organization to buy books for boys in camp. It was not an uncommon sight so see boys and girls staggering under the load of bun-ilea of papers and magazines as they gathered it for the paper salvage campaign, and through he complete cooperation of the students tons of paper were .selected. Even though enemy planes were far way, we did not forget that it could happen here and so we prepared to meat all emergencies by practicing air raid drills and by cooperating with the local Civilian Defense officials. During all this activity the students did not forget to buy war savings stamps and bonds, and three months before the end of school we passed our goal of $1,000.00. Now we feel that we should forego the publication of an annual and replace it with the more inexpensive yearbook, which is, of course, the least we can do to help win the wax. Winter Haven High School has sponsored other minor Defense activities, and we are proud to say that each individual in the school and tlie community has rallied to this cause in the Defense of America. . -ATHLETICS ■ATHLETICS Kenneth Spperir — Chester jWann Cordon Bonsack COACHES ALTERNATE CAPTAIN CAPTAIN Cty Street ATHLETICS FRONT ROW ' Catherine Harris Pat Henderson Frances Burden Mary Jeanne Hill Lillian Hodnett BACK ROW Glen Davidson Frank Roberts Harvey Snively Herbert Pollard Bobby Thornhill Otis Bice Park McGeachy, Mgr.; Burke Childs, William Hal lean.
