WA HWA HTA SEE --- 1941 ---------------------- CLASS HISTORY By Sarah Caluson Four years ago a group of draftees enlisted in the freshman class. At first it was rather difficult to get used to the routine of our new life. We were bombarded on all sides by questions from our colonels, but we weren’t daunted. We tried hard and soon caught on. We weren't as dumb as you’d expect rookies to be. We soon became known as the most spirited division in the entire camp. In our second year we became corporals and the things that had been important when we were rookies no longer occupied our attention. Those corporals were very sophisticated, what with dancin’ and datin' and everythin’! We even went so far as to give our superiors, the second lieutenants, a picnic out at Eagle Lake. Six of our girls became members of the cheering squad—the first time corporals had been given this honor. They were Joyce Hawkins, Mary Louise Kennedy, Florence Phares, Suzanne Russell, Tharasa F.ycleshimer, and Sylvia Chambliss. As sergeants we began to feel the weight of our responsibilities. Many boys went out for football, while quite a few of our girls were Imps. From our ranks came many of the members of various school organizations. Mary Louise Kennedy, Mildred Harris, June Courson, Florence Phares, Martha Teeter, Howard Lucas, and J. T. Barnwell became members of the National Honor Society. Several of the sergeants, with some second lieutenants, helped to start the English Club under the direction of Colonel Munck and Colonel Wolfe. These sergeants were Jeanne Ostrander, June Courson, Florence Phares, Mary Louise Kennedy, Martha Teeter, Mary Rabc, Sarah Callison, Mildred Harris, Cline Helm, Ralph Wolf, Ralph White, and Howard Lucas. One of our most important achievements that year was the play, Who Wouldn't Be Crazy,” with Sergeants Bob Williams and Jeanne Ostrander in the leading roles. As our camp is located in the deep south, we chose a Gone With the Wind theme for our Junior-Senior banquet, and carried out this idea in program and place cards. Finally we entered our last term of service. As second lieutenants we began to help run the camp. Ronny Hutton was elected president of the student body and Mildred Harris, secretary. Under Ronny’s government the monitor system was introduced, and plans were made for a loud speaker system to be installed throughout the camp. Jeanne Ostrander, Sarah Callison, Flora Daniels, Thercse Barfield, and Mary Rabc were members of the National Honor Society. Flora Daniels, Joyce Hawkins, and Ronny Hutton joined the English Club. In sports our lieutenants stood by their colors gallantly. Darrell Hammond was our football captain, and made the second all-conference team and second Polk all-star team. Elbert Layton and Ronny Hutton were also outstanding on the battle field. The basketball boys deserve a paragraph all to themselves, for they routed all the opposing forces and won the South Florida Conference Championship. From our division came champions James Machin, Ralph Wolf, J. T. Barnwell, and R. J. Brown. James made the all-conference team and was elected basketball captain. Henry Whatley starred in baseball, being all-conference pitcher and captain of our team, and R. J. Brown was outstanding in track. The sergeants of this year, familiarly known as Juniors, gave us a banquet with a movie theme. They presented academy awards to the most popular boy and girl, Florence Phares and Watson Bacon; best looking, Elbert Layton and Martha Mitchell; best all-’round, Darrell Hammond and June Courson; most intellectual, Howard Lucas and Mary Louise Kennedy; most athletic, J. T. Barnwell and Margaret Madden; cutest, Roger Krabill and Mary Rabc; wittiest, Cline Helm and Ruby Dobbins. After the banquet we began to work in earnest to get ready for that great event known as graduation. We worked on the annual and the Senior play, Here Comes Patricia,” with June Courson in the title role. We decided not to have a class night because of the lack of time. Now we find ourselves on the brink of what seems to be a very uncertain future. Some boys may enlist in the real army, or navy, while others shall don civilian clothes, and some of the girls may join the order of the apron and broom, while others shall become old maids.” Some of us shall reach the top rank although most of us shall be just average,” but all of us shall remember our enlistment in our Alma Mater. Mrs. Smith-Porter and Mr. Wade try to run Patricia out of town because she sets a bad example for the younger set of Fern Lawn. Jimmy Clark, an employee of Mr. Wade, is supposed to uproot Patricia’s grove and run her out of town. Another job he holds is to look after Mr. Wade’s niece, Shirley. Patricia then impersonates Shirley in order that she can turn the tables on Mrs. Smith-Porter and Mr. Wade. Jimmy has never seen her before and believes she is Shirley Wade. They fall in love with each other. Patricia, as Shirley, helps Jimmy up-root the wrong grove and also tells him that that Hammond” girl has gone. Word is received that the Governor is coming to town and when he arrives Patricia reveals her identity. Mrs. Smith-Porter and Mr. Wade try to make apologies for their mistakes. WA HWA HTA SEE --- 1941 ---------- COACHES Coach Eppert To take the place of Coach Charlie Stolz, who was unable to continue his duties as coach due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident this summer, Winter Haven succeeded in getting Coach Kenneth Eppert from Bolles of Jacksonville. After establishing records with his team at Holies, Coach Eppert continued his fine work by improving the football team’s record and by giving the high school its first championship basketball team. Eppert was a hit with the boys from the first. He is a good sport and has a fine sense of humor. He gives a player every chance he earns, bringing out the best in each boy. If the student body and the townspeople will give him their wholehearted support he will continue to turn out championship teams. Miss Rebecca Waldrop Miss Becky” returned to Winter Haven to teach after having been gone for four years. She was a great favorite with the girls from the first. Instead of emphasizing a varsity team in basketball she has played up intra-mural sports and has developed class teams. She wishes to have an even bigger and better intra-mural program next year. Joe Justice A former Rollins star. Justice took over the job as assistant coach here his first year after graduation. Justice was a fine all around athlete in college and proved his ability as coach while assisting Eppert. He left his position toward the end of the semester, however, to accept a job as freshman coach at Rollins. WA HWA HTA SEE ----------1941 ---- FOOTBALL REVIEW The Devils opened and closed their season this year with a bang, beating Jefferson in the first and Lake Wales in the last. The games in the mid-season, however, were not always in the Devils’ favor as they lost five of their six conference games. To make up for their lack of conference wins the Devils took three of their four non-conference games, the only loss being to Lakeland. Contrary to the looks of the scores the Devils always played a great game and never lost without letting the other team know they had been in a ball game. Several of the boys received special honors. Darrell Hammond, captain, was selected on the All-Conference second team and the All-Polk second team. Elbert Layton, J. T. Barnwell, Ronny Hutton, and John MacCalla were also on the All-Polk second team.
