Alf JL fi '- II3IIflfII'IIlfA Ser gum- Class History The-re is an old adage which sa, s 'time flies when you are hav- ing fun. That was certainly true for the class of '87. The past four years have been most exciting. When we entered Winston- Salem State University in 1983, there was the aura of mystery. Most of us had never been away from home for a period of time and this new environment presented a challenge. However, it did not take long to adjust academically and socially to the institution. Each of us believed in academic excellence and prepared to meet the challenge of college life. Kevin Davis was elected president of the freshman class, and under his leadership we began to make our presence known on campus. We attended our first Black College Day in Raleigh, NC, that year. More than one-half of the students from WSSU were members of our class. Another first for us was witness- ing the coronation of Miss WSSU. Ms. Kimberly Alston was elected Miss Freshman and represented our class in that event. Even though academics came first, we had time to enjoy football and basketball games. In fact, the success of the'athletic teams depended, in part, on many of the young men in our class. Derrick Beasley, Mark Wallace, Marsha Paul, Leonardo Horne and Vernard Dillard were recipients of the NAIA District 26 honors. The final highlight of our first year at WSSU was a trip to Carowinds Amusement Park. Our second year on campus proved to be mo1'e exciting than the first. Most of us had made the transition from high school to college. Further, we were better prepared to raise money for class projects. Our class president, Michael Clark, saw to it that we met monthly in order to discuss fund raising activities. Out of one brainstorming session came the idea for a fashion show. This show was a success. Also, after much planning, we were able to sponsor the Mr. Atlas and Ms. Bathing Beauty Contest that year. In addition, we purchased sweatshirts in our class colors and with our motto on them. Other WSSU students ad- mired our distinguished black and gray sweats and wanted to purchase some. Our class queen for the 1984-85 school year was Ms. Renee Williams. As we moved into our Junior year, we witnessed the inaugura- T l JEANETTE ADAMS WILLI XM D ADAMS EDRENA ALEXANDER WTNSTON-SALEM, NC JONEISVILLE.
