Thompson, Jr. became the Chancellor of Winston-Salem State University on August 1, 1985. He is the eighth chief adminis- trator of the university since its founding in 1892. A native of Harlem in New York, Dr.Thompson was reared and educated in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He earned the Bachelor's Degree in Biology at North Carolina Central University in 1956, the Masters Degree in Biology at North Carolina Central university in 1958, and the Ph.D in Educational Administration at Duke University in 1977. His doctoral studies also in- cluded three minors: political science, econom- ics and educational law. Dr. Thompson brought to Winston-Salem State University and its many constituent groups an extensive background in educational administration. H6 has senled as Vice President for student services and SDeCiaI programs for The University of North Carolina - General Administration, Interim Chancellor for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University loreensboro, NCl, Senior Vice President, Provost, and Vice President for academic affairs for Shaw university iRaleigh, NCI. In addition, he has numerous teaching ex- periences to his credit. A veteran of the United States Army, Dr. Thompson was research techni- cian in the Burn Surgical Research Unit of Brooks Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dr. Thompson has written andfor co- authored a plethora of scholarly articles on topics ranging from Design and Construction of a Lyphalization Apparatus from Scrapped Equipment for United States Army Medical Corps to the Revised North Carolina State Plan for the Further Elimination of Racial Duality in Public Higher Education Systems, Phase II. His past and present affiliations include the American Association of university Professors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Boy Scouts of America lDistrict Commissionerl, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Raleigh Business and Professional League, and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the North Carolina Commu- nity College System and the Board of Directors of the Shakespeare Festival lHigh Point, NCl, the Microelectronic Center of North Carolina and the Ralph Campbell Scholarship Fund. Dr. Thompson's achievements and con- tributions have been recognized and acknowledged by meritorious awards and citations from several groups. In 1964, ne was named Man of the Year by kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The fraternity also honored him in 1980 for Outstanding Achievements in the Chosen Field of Human Endeavor and again in 1982 as Citizen of the Year. He is listed in Who's Who in North Carolina l1973i and Who's Who Among Black Americans 11980-811. For his dis- tinguished service as Interim Chancellor at North Carolina A 8. T State university, Dr. Thompson received resolutions and citations from The University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees of North Carolina A Si T State University, and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, Dr. Thompson counts among his interests, community work, sports, music, reading and fishing.
