The University plant consists of 26 well-equipped and sub- stantial buildings on a rapidly growing 76-acre campus. The University community is undergoing transition and expansion both academically and physically. The North Carolina General Assembly in 1963 changed the name of the institution to Winston-Salem State College. ln 1969 Winston-Salem State achieved university status. Effectiveluly 1, 1972, by legislative enactment of the 1971 North Carolina General Assembly, Winston-Salem State Uni- versity became one of the 16 Public institutions of higher education in North Carolina comprising the University of North Carolina.
