Winston-Salem State University is an accredited, four-year, coeducational, state-supported liberal arts institution. Found- ed as the Slater Industrial Academy in 1892, it was chartered by the state in 1897 as the Slater Industrial and State Normal School. In 1925 a new charter granted by the North Carolina General Assembly extended its curriculum to four years above high school, changed the name to Winston-Salem Teachers College and empowered it to confer appropriate degrees. It thus became the first black institution in the United States to grant degrees for teaching in the elementary grades. Pursuant to action of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1953, the Nursing School of the Winston-Salem Teachers College was established. The four-year nursing program emphasizes academic and professional training. Graduates are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. ln ...ag-.
