SENIOR CLASS HISTORY With the slogan, t'KnowIedge: Our Ultimate Ambition, we were led by the hard work and dedication of our freshman class president, Karl Menefee. While under his leadership, we had the opportunity to sponsor a bus to the lirst Black College Day, we started the Mr. Atlas!Ms. Bathing Beauty Contest: we held a picnic for the freshman class at Reynolds Park, and last but not least, we saw Evette Darden elected Miss Freshman. ln 1980-1981 we boasted a class enrollment 883 strong but by our Sophomore year our class enrollment had dropped to 442. Nevertheless, our sophomore class president, Frank Lawson worked diligently to acquire class unity by designing and guiding the sales of our class tee shirts. As sophomores we also enjoyed a trip to Carowinds and saw Gail Welch represent us well in her position as Miss Sophomore. Ourjunioryear was highlighted by many great firsts for the University. A 51 million gift was sponsored by Rl. Reynolds lndustry, which enabled the building, completion, and dedication of the Francis L. Atkins Nursing Building, the conversion ofWallace Street into a mall, and the renovation of the Kennedy Dining Hall. Under the Mass Communications coordinator, Mr. Clarence W. Thomas, radio station WSNC-FM began it's broadcmt as the radio voice of the WSSU Ramsg the construction of the new Business Building and the dedication of the Sculpture Gardens which is the only one of its kind in the UNC school system. 1982 also brought such entertainers as Peabo Bryson, Roberta Flack, and Ray Charles. We were dazzled by such Broadway hits as, A Chorus Line, Eubie, and Ain't Misbehavin'. We had the opportunity to listen to such distinguished literary personalities as Maya Angelou, Sterling Brown, and Ron Milner. By 1982-1983 our class enrollment had dropped to 415 but under the patient leadership of Antonio Dove, the junior class president, the class enjoyed a pizza party, a memorable Home- coming which boasted the school's first beer blastg and the reign ofAnita Spikes as Miss junior. We are moving towards the end of our journey with Esther Cox as our leader and Dr. Shirley Manigault as our advisor. We'lI have many great memories of our senior year at Old SU which include the reign of Teresa Brown as Miss Senior and the opening of the renovated dining hall. We've watched the university grow as we have grown and now we are ready to depart and serve and continue to pursue our ultimate ambition. jennifer Baggett, Sharon Edmonds, Stanley King l' SENIORS l D
