T 3 411 History The Winston-Salem State University was founded as the Slater Industrial Academy on September 28, 1892. It began in a one-room structure with twenty-five C253 pupils and one teacher, In 1962 the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the changing of the name from Winston Salem Teacher College to Winston-Salem State College. A statute designating Winston-Salem State University received legislative approval in 1969. Today, the family of Winston-Salem State University is over 1,800 stu- dents strong and rapidly increasing. Members of the faculty, the staff and student body have cooper- ated in this project as in all others and demon- strated the true spirit of comradeship one would expect to find in a closely knit family. l commend the Editor, the Staff, the Faculty Advisor, Publisher and all others who have con- tributed to this publication. The theme- Dreams Yesterday-realities today and widening horizons for tomorrow , emphasizes important features for a class, a university, a people. Yes, big dreams can become realities and horizons can be broadened. We trust that you are able to say that you are convinced of this as a re- sult of your days at Winston-Salem State University. PRESIDENT ' v ij. ' . f Qif' 'gf f'-Q-sl In Appreciation l With grateful acknowledge Nl r. he has rendered rain, sleet, and through. appreciation, we would like to Thomas L. Brown for the service us during the past four years. ln snow Mr. Brown gets the mail Mr. Brown, we thank you. TH E 1972 RAM 10 I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. . I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be trans- formed.into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their- skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with words of interposition and nullifi- cation, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. . . . Love Mary F. Smith PRESIDENT: Terry Howard The level of consciousness among students at Winston-Salem State University has risen markedly during my three years as a student at this institution. From 1968 to 1971, we as students concentrated our efforts toward making changes in our curriculum and on our campus to make this a better place for learning. The next year saw us shifting to a broader scope, concentrating on problems which immediately surrounded us. Some of us began moving out into the community and working toward alleviating some basic problems facing our people. We volunteered our services to tutorial programs and other community based projects. This past year has been significant in that it marks the beginning of our moving out and involving ourselves in state and nationwide issues. Our mobilizing and moving to Raleigh in masse proved not only to people throughout the state, but to ourselves that we can get together and move constructively in matters that. threaten our existence. My being instrumental in this movement, the largest in the history of Winston-Salem State University will indeed be always considered as one of the most meaningful experiences in my life. Therefore I accredit this year's success to you as Black students and leaders of tomorrow. For without your efforts, concern, and contributions this school year would have been impossible. My advice to you is to continue to grow with WSSU, love it, and above all, make a valuable contribution to it, for it is our home now and will be the home of many Black people many years to come. Cleo Wallace, who led Winston-Salem State to its first football title, has been named the coach-of-the-year in the CIAA. Announcement of Wallace's selection was made by William M. Bennett of Virginia State, chairman of the selection committee. Winston-Salem, with a predominantly freshman team, won the Southern division title in the CIAA with a 6-2 conference record. The Rams lost to Elizabeth City 33-22 in the CIAA championship contest. Winston-Salem had beaten Elizabeth City with the score 13-12 in a regular-season game. Wallace, and his assistants, Baxter Holman and Lu Wims, brought the Rams to a championship even though not one member of the Winston-Salem team was picked on the all CIAA team. Wallace, is a graduate of Winston-Salem State, playing football and basketball in college, A graduate of Essex County High School in New Jersey, Wallace had never played football when he came to Winston-Salem. He came on a basketball scholarship recruited by Coach C. E. CBighouseb Gaines. He played guard on the football team. He played football in the army at Bolling Field and his team won the national service championship. He played pro football with the Cleveland Browns. Wallace coached high school football, winning championships at Mount Airy Jones and Winston-Salem Anderson. 237 SS, orfolk Here Tonight i ingstone Bows, SS Win y 1 Special To The Journal SALISBURY - Winston- Salem State won its fifth game in six starts last night when it raced away from Livingstone in the second half and captured a 95-78'CIAA victory. Winston-Salem State is now 3-1 in the Southern Division of the CIAA and Livingstone is 0-3. The Rams were led by Roger Wells who popped in 18 points. Harold lFunny1 Kitt, Arthur Chavious and Ralph Jones each collected 15 while Earl Williams added 12. The Rams took the lead in the early stages but did not shake loose from the Bears until the second half. The Bears rallied and tied the score at 26-26 with five minutes left in the first half. That was the last time the score was tied. The Rams went on a scoring spree to push the count to 39-30 with 2:45 left in the first half. Two field goals by William Ferguson helped cut the Rams' lead to 40-38 at halftime. Jerry Hamilton kept Livingstone in the running in the first half when he posted 15 points, The Rams tightened up their defense and limited Hamilton to two points in the second half. Ferguson led Livingstone with 27 points while James Bullock got 23. , Kitt paced the Rams in scoring in fthe first half and was the only member of the State team in double figures with 14. The Rams broke away fast in the second half taking a 62- 49 lead in the first five minutes. With Chavious and Wells pouring in points, State led 69- 57 at the 10-minute mark and never let up. The Rams led by 10 or more By Mary Garber Stall laprtlr Winston-Salem State could establish Itself as the number one team in the CIAA with a victory tonight. 'I'he Rams meet Norfolk State at Memorial Coliseum at 8 p.m. The Norfolk State Spartans have a lock on number one in the CIAA. Last season, the Spartans were Northern Division champions with an unbeaten record and won the CIAA tournament. In the 1971-72 season, Norfolk State was the pre-season favorite and in the first few weeks of the season has shown those predictions to be very accurate. The Spartans are undefeated in CIAA play. Their only loss was a 93-89 defeat to North Carolina ASLT State, a game that Coach Robert L. Smith of Norfolk thinks his team should have won. It would seem that a team with a 4-0 record in the CIAA and a 5-1 overall mark would be playing pretty good basketball, but Smith is far from satisfied. We just happen to be winning right now, Smith said yesterday. We haven't looked that good, We are still ragged. Maybe we are still trying to prove that we are champions and there is too much pressure on us, All I know is that we are making turnovers that we cause ourselves. Smith thinks that one reason for the large number of turnovers by teams in the CIAA is that everyone is trying to play fast break basketball. lt is hard to convince players that you can't play fast break basketball if you don't have the ball, said Smith. Some teams, he says, are moving so rapidly that they are not taking time to get the rebound and have control of the ball. Norfolk ls a solid team, one that does almost everything well. The Spartans run and shoot with skill. And they play solid defense. They have good height up front. They have experience and talent. Norfolk has two all-CIAA players back from last year. One is ,Leroy Jones, a 6-7 forward, who made the team last season as a freshman. Another is Rudy Peele, a 6-2 Junior, who has been averaging 31 points a game. Per-le lsn't tall, said Smith, but he is a good rcbounder. In fact, he does everything well, Ile is a steady player. Randolph Lassiter, a 6-5 junior, is the other frontcourt man The backrourt men are 6-0 Roosevelt Mitchell and 5-10 Ronald Wilson. .Io .Io Bethea, a fine freshman player, is the sixth man. We have been having problems with our free throws, said Smith. I don't understand why. We work on it all the time. We like to run, We try for the fast break if it is there. If not, we can play pattern basketball. We play a pressure defense. Winston-Salem State is a similar type of team. The Rams like to run and shoot. And they play a pressure defense. Coach C. E, tBighousel Gaines probably will start Ralph Jones, Earl Williams and Bobby Garner up front. With that lineup, Winston-Salem can match Norfolk State in size quite well. Harold tFunnyl Kitt and Arthur Chavious will be in the backcourt for Winston-Salem. The Rams will be playing at home after five games on the road. wx. points until they sported ln the closing minutes into their 15-point final margin. Wells was deadly from the corners as Chavious and Kitt hit from the outside. Williams and Garner gave Winston- Salem control of the boards in the second half. Coach C. E. tBighousej Gaines said the Rams had a good team effort once they got started. We had a slow start. Perhaps we were looking forward to the game against Norfolk State tto be played here tonightJ, said Gaines. winsron-salem srars , ro FT am. Rudy Pee-le, Norfolk State's second CIAA all-star at guard, was another victim of the Rams' match-up zone defense and scored 10 of his 26 points in the last six minutes, long after the eventual winner had all but been determined.
