We have traveled along the avenues tlrought with eomplexity. ln these pages we are attempting to show through words and pictures the patterns ot' lille at Winston4Salem State College which have helped us to realize these goals. Although it is impossible to depict the many experiences we have shared, or the many emotions we have felt, we hope that all who read this book will understand why we say Exultingly we praise thy name. A ,IV :rj l X Fellow Students: The student government exists on our campus as an instrument of student expression in all aspects of college life-educational, social, cultural and policy-making, and to give the student practical experiences in participating in the governing of his surroundings as well as himself. Objectives of the Student Government Association must be Taj to maintain academic freedom and student rights, Cbj to stimulate and improve democratic student government and student participation in that governmentg tcj to work toward participation and thus demanding better educational standards, facilities, teaching methods in the total improvement of the collegeg Cdl to improve student cultural, social and physical welfare through a complete re-orientation of basic personal values and attitudes. The Student Council over the past year has moved in this direction. This move must not now be allowed to relapse. Rather the spirit of the times must be sighted and, moving unrelentingly toward that spirit, the Student Council with the full and active support of the entire Student Government Association must forge ahead as the unchallenged leader of the student body. This past administration worked during the year for the betterment of all the students. lt spearheaded the successful Feed the Poor Campaign, Non-compulsory class attendance policy, completion of the SGA Constitution, reforms in cafeteria food policy, and tutorial programs. Socially, the Miss Winston-Salem State College campaign, the Peaches and Herb show, and the Inez and Charlie Foxx show. These were sponsored by the SGA. Our involvement in the production of the Homecoming Festivities made this a gala remembrance for the student body. At this time, the President wishes to express his sincere appreciation to all of the members of the SGA generally and the members of the Student Council specifically for having given their personal aid and trust to his office in making this calendar year a success in its own way. You have worked, for the most part, with a dedication that will be forever remembered and cherished. Our efforts would have been marred most tremendously without your sacrifices. Thank you. There is room, however, for much improvement. Therefore, I challenge each student here at State College to start toward this goal of improvement with new dedication, with much vigor, interest, and a sense of necessity and rightness in purpose. We have been fortunate, somewhat, i-n our strides toward internal advancement and unity of purpose, therefore we must continue, now, to work and push forward for more needed changes for the total college community's improvement. The SGA must no longer concern itself simply with the social activities-dances, games and moviesfof the college program, rather with the whole collegeeeducational, social, cultural and policy-making. I have enjoyed my association with you over the years. In unity, there IS strength, thus Let us do together that which we cannot do alone. For a better WSSC, I am. Sincerely yours, ' qffwzwe, Robbin Kirkland, President 175 sn'w.-,-hw..1.'-u..........a,n.a......44 .,..., 1. .. Oxfews Taper Sly? S KCC ,Q Y ,X xl jf F f Qi! I Z -.. Louise Gaither. 180 L fc' 120wQ0Qe122Q12f lt is impossible to give credit to everyone who has participated in the making of this yearbook. There are a few people though, to whom we would like to give laurels, for they most certainly did more than their share in bringing this book to the student body. Sports editor Arthur Blue deserves many thanks for taking over the job after three people were unable to complete the job, Betty Floyd kept the cameramen rolling and saw that we were kept in pictures the first semester. She was also the chief pacilier and tranquilizer for the editor. John Hill and James Hairston did an excellent job on photography under the instruction of James Brown, who is also responsible for all our beautiful pictures. Mary DeBerry was an excellent secretary and secured her job well by setting up a file system that only she could understand. Prentice White worked arduously at all the little necessary jobs no one else would do and also did a beautiful job with the Classes section, A big laurel crown goes to Barbara Hassell for helping with proof reading the layouts throughout the yearbook. Barbara Bass did an impeccable job as assistant editor and deserves bouquets for putting up with all our griping. Thanks to Betty McPhatter, who came in at the last minute to help with the typing. Money is always lacking in a yearbook budget and thanks go to all underclassmen for giving additional funds needed to complete the yearbook. Perhaps our biggest laurel should go to Mrs. Louise H. Gaither who was possibly the best and most co-operative advisor any group could have. thanks to Mr. W. E. Bullock for taking time in helping us to make this book a great success. These are but a few of the many that we owe laurels and bouquets to but they are the ones who worked most diligently and were most dependable. To those few we haven't mentioned our many thanks go to you also.
