M L. The fulfillment of this goal is two-fold-the individual's self- motivation in securing his goals and the institution which he feels is worthy of these attainments. Thus, his place in society is a mirror re- flecting how well he has utilized the opportunities set forth by the institution. If worth had not been an attribute of Winstom-Salem State College, it probably would not have reached its 75th year of matriculation. Had it not offered to its student body and faculty members all of the fields that comprise a full and wholesome education which includes cultural, social, religious, and academic opportunities, chances are it would not possess its present status. If it had not given to us all of the values we were seeking as future educators, we, the Senior Class of 1968, would not hold our Alma Mater, Winston-Salem State College would not have flourished to the apex of success that it is now. Now that our wishes have been fulfilled and our values heightened, we, the Senior Class of 1968, can truthfully say that wt have attained Excellence Without, Excuse. Therefore, we give full dedication to Winston-Salem State College in commemoration to its 75th Anniversary. As we attempt to impliment Winstom-Salem State College's immortal motto, Enter To Learn, Depart To Serve, we will always repeat in full chorus: As 1l'eg0f01'z'l1 from ole S. C. We grew academically strong. and our moral, social. and religious roles were heightened. W'ords cannot give him all of the credit and praise he deserves. XVe thank and appreciate him. 1 VVorking' with the new ln-eed was not all peaches and cream, hut Mr. Jefferson llnniphrey possessed the patience and endurance to inspire us as newly-entering students to make a successful heginning. He had nrohlems, hut as our Freshnian Class advisor he overcame them all with a smile. VVe were successful in every class project endeavored under his guidance. We appreciate him greatly. As our Senior Class advisor. Mrs. Vivienne Conley was taxed With the many last minute details that consisted of joys as well as sorrows. In this one year she advised us to redirect our aims toward the very highest goals possihle and to reshape our attitudes if they showed signs of sloth- fulness, greed, and selfishness. By taking her advice, we are now ready to assume our roles as educators. May God bless her! Afterthoug ht In these pages we have tried to give an account of the birth of a great institution-VVinston-Salem State College. It was born seventy-five years ago and has proven to be an asset to everyone who enters its portals. lts growth has been miraculous. Its products have prospered greatly and the regrets for its birth have been none. We hail its growth and endurance, for without having offered us so much we would not be ready to face the world that stares at us with dim yet glowing eyes. We salute her--her faculty. administrative staff, the student body and other personnel. VVe feel that no single page, word, face or object has been wasteful to the portrayal of Winston-Salem State College as our dear Alma Mater. VVe feel that its worth can only be heightened by products, whether stu- dents or projects as this yearbook, that reveal in many ways the many abilities that it developed in us and the many talents that it created in us. We believe that every worry, headache, and heartaches was very worth- while. Joy seemed to accompany our every move. The end product was visualized as a future masterpiece. Every dark cloud that seemed to hover above our heads during the preparation of this book was overcome. Now we are proud to say that we were able to brighten up the seventy-fifth candle placed upon the rose-colored icing of Winston-Salem State College. Co-operation was not lacking in any way. Every member of the Senior class wanted to take a part in the authorship of this yearbook. Suggestions and offers were numerous. This is evidence of the deep love embedded in the hearts of the senior class for our own Winston-Salem State College. A thousand pages could not give her complete justice. Each building represents a landmark that only time can erase. Each face seen on these pages represents one who is searching for knowledge or one who is trying to promote and administer learning activities. Each activity or organi- zation pictured here is an example of the varied areas designed by this school for social, academic, religious and economic promotion. It has been a pleasure to prepare this yearbook. We hope that these pages have proven why Winston-Salem State College has endured for seventy-five years. It is our prayer that she will live on in full glory for another and another seventy-five years. HAPPY SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY! Lawrence Starks, Jr. Editor-in-Chief 'I' Thanks Special expressions of appreciation extended to Mr. Clarence Nottingham because he gave many hours of his time photographing and re-photo- graphing' the students, faculty and buildinfrs for this Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Yearbook. He was not delayed by the falling snows, heavy rains or icy-cold weather. His patience and endurance were remarkable. Success in this project would have been impossible without him. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Mr, Nottingham. Words of thanks must be given to Dr. Jacqueline Shepperson who willingly permitted the yearbook staff to use her desk, typewriter and other supplies and machines: Coach Clarence Gaines and Mr. James Fields who photographed many people and features for this yearbook: and, Mr. Luix Overbea, who ad- vised the staff on the best journalistic styles, letters, and lay-outs. Success would not have been so great without the aid of these individuals. Many thanks to each of you.
