I-le is able to cope with some of these problems and is able to solve some of them satisfacto- rily. Only when he is able to do this is he accepted as a member of society. We are graduating seniors. Some of us feel that our hardest problems have been faced. The majority of us realize, however, that our problems are only beginning, that we are only now going out into the world. We realize that we will face hardships and experiences that will make these past experiences seem minute. For this reason, we, the Editorial Staff, have worked tirelessly and painstakingly on this yearbook. When, in coming years, our problems become more than we can bear, when our hardships seem to have the best of us, we can turn back the pages of time to the days of our youth by opening and enjoying this, TI-IE RAM, 1961-62. 3 i -5. FLOWERS: PINK CARNATION COLORS: PINK AND BLUE 41 27 i ?i ?. ,,, Class History The title of our play is the History of the Class of 1962 at Winston-Salem Teachers College. The play has four acts. The cast is the Class of 1962. Act I It was September, 1958, when the curtain opened at Winston-Salem Teachers College, disclosing on the stage a large number of freshmen who had come from many areas of the country. Each came with great expectations. Some chose nursing as their major field, others chose elementary education, and still others music. During the Freshman Orientation Week, we became acquainted with our roommates, classmates, and schoolmates. This was a very crucial week for many who were away from home for the first time. We took the entrance examinations and during this week visited the business district of downtown Winston-Salem. Some won very valuable prizes from the Merchants' Association. lt was the custom for the freshman class to give a talent show. During the show, the upperclassmen discovered that our class was not merely fresh but talented. Mrs. C-oore was appointed as our class advisor. She proved to be a very efficient directress and through her leadership we were able to keep the show going. Willie Davis, our class president, had the leading role in the play. Other class officers chosen were as follows: Clarence Chambers, Vice President, Peggy Freeman, Secretary, and Flecia Wynecoff, Treasurer. Throughout our freshman year, we had to study hard but we also participated in the extra-curricular activities, such as the band, choir, athletics, drama club, charm club, and pledge clubs. Marie Jacobs, a very attractive young lady, was chosen to represent our class as an attendant in Miss T. C. 's court. In athletics, there were many members of the class who were on the basketball, football, and track teams. On the basketball team were George Foree, James Johnson, and Donald Faison. Nelson Guthrie, Ivory Roberts, Jerome Jewell, Emanual Witherspoon, and Rodger Adams were on the football team. On the track team were Frank Bowens, Russell Rogers, Edward Johnston, Edward Riley, Robert Manning, and Robert Jackson. Our class also participated in the drama tournament. Representing our class were Markethia Baldwin, Beverly Berry, Edward Riley, and Elmer Britt. Our freshman year was a successful and enjoyable one for many of us, however, a sad shadow was cast over our lives when one of our classmates, Elmer Britt, experienced a fatal tragedy. In May, 1959, the curtain closed on our freshman year. Act ll The curtain opened on Act Two. lt was September, 1959. Once again we were on the campus at Winston-Salem Teachers College as sophomores. Many who were with us during ourfreshman year did not return and some who were not with us our freshman year joined our class. We were here once again to continue our climb to the top of our educational ladder. We elected the following class officers: Willie Davis, President, Mary Flowers, Vice President, Diana Davis, Secretary, and Donree Foster, Treasurer. Beverly Berry represented our class as a member of the Student Council. We welcomed the incoming freshmen, and feeling a little superior to them, tried to show them the ropes. Those who were in the band put on their band suits once again. The members of the choir sang new songs, and the boys on the football team and the basketball team put on their suits once again to win many victories. We chose as our representative to Miss T. C.'s court the lovely Lorraine Lesane. Homecoming was a memorable event for us because it gave us a chance to dance to the music of Lionel Hampton. Those who had pledged to the sororities and fraternities began making preparations to cross those burning sands. Lillian Kiser was inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society. The nurses felt very proud when they received their caps at the annual capping exercise. This was their first big step toward graduation. Our second year in college passed rather swiftly and once again we were at the end of another school year. 28 Act III At the beginning of Act Three, we found ourselves on stage starting a new year in our career. We faced the year with new promises to ourselves. As juniors we had taken on a new responsibility. We would be responsible for choosing a candidate to run for Miss T. C. and we assumed many other tasks. Nevertheless we felt that we would conquer in everything we set out to do. We elected the following class officers: Willie Davis, President, Janice Inabinett, Secretary, and Donree Foster, Treasurer. Mary Flowers and Beverly Berry were our Student Council representatives. Our first big task as juniors was to elect a candidate to run for Miss Teachers College. We chose the very beautiful Mary Wilkins who was a nursing student from Salisbury, North Carolina. Mary Wilkins won the honor, and ruled graciously over the school as Miss T. C. During the fall quarter, we were faced with taking the much dreaded Junior Qualification Tests. We knew that these tests would determine our status as college students. This time also brought the nursing students to a goal of which they had dreamed-affiliation. Their assignments took them to many cities on the eastem coast of the United States. The football team made a good showing with such players as Nelson Guthrie, Robert Jackson, Ivory Roberts, and many others. Homecoming events gave us a chance to renew our acquaintances with many friends. The football team was victorious at the homecoming game, and at the victory dance we danced to the music of Earl Bostic. Winter brought changes to the campus. The members of the football team hung up their suits, and the boys on the basketball team put on their suits. This was a victorious year for the team. They became C.I.A.A. champions, and George Foree made the trip with the team to Kansas City as a starting player. When the spring quarter came, we were all filled with spring fever. We started making plans for the Junior-Senior Dance. The Crystal Ballroom was the scene of the biggest event of the quarter. Thus, the curtains closed on another successful year in our college life. We left school looking forward to the next year when we would return as seniors. Act IV The curtains opened for the final act. Many changes had taken place on the campus of Winston-Salem Teachers College. We were no longer on the quarter system but on the semester system. We returned to the campus to play our last roles as students. We were now seniors. We started the year by electing our class officers. Lewis Roland was chosen as President, James Young, Vice President, Janice Inabinett, Secretaryg and Floyd Plymouth, Treasurer. Clarence Chambers and Beverly Berry were elected to serve our'class as Student Council representatives. Mrs. Goore, who had been with us three long years, was still our class advisor. Our senior year meant that we had many tasks to perform. It was time for us to do our student teaching and it was a thrilling experience to find out that we could acmally teach. The student nurses retumed from their successful affiliations. The workers on the 1962 RAM began to work hard to put out a suc- cessful yearbook. Our last Homecoming as students arrived. We were proud to run Ann Gilmore as our candidate for Miss T.C. Janie Aldridge won the title of Miss Ram. We had many students in our class to make Who's Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges. They were William Hunt, Effie Bullock, Willie Davis, Lilliam Kiser, Donree Foster, Sara Hunt, and Joseph Daniels. Juanita Carter won the Miss S.N.E.A. title. As seniors we were allowed to attend the Alumni Ball. We danced to the music of Lloyd Price and his orchestra. There were several members of the class who had played with the college band since they were freshmen. They were:Dia.na Davis, Markethia Baldwin, Garfield Robinson, Foster Lassiter, Joyce Johnson, and Marvin Setzer. They were stepping prouldy in their new uniforms at the Homecoming parade and game. As the curtain nears its closing on the final act, there is excitement in the air. We are approaching that moment in our play for which we have striven since we were freshmen-graduation. The play has not yet ended. But you, dear readers, will be present, perhaps, when the final curtain falls and can write the finale for yourselves. Written by SHIRLEY PULLEN 29 Prophcsy As I gaze into my crystal ball, I see the class of 62 as the new inhabitants of the moon.l had become curious as to what the lunatics of 62 were doing since they had become moon-struck and so I decided to find out. I knew about myself because, along with EDWINA CAMPBELL, I was working hard trying to pay for those phone calls that kept us in touch with those two T's on earth. I knew she was curious and so I asked her to join me. As we hail a cab, we find that we are to occupy one with the newlyweds, VIRGINIA OLDS and DEXTER STEPHENS, who have just returned from their honeymoon on Earth. We find that BILLY C. ADAMS owns the Interplanetary Cab Company. As we ride down First Quarter Street, we passed the Sattelite Theater where the main feature today is Bones, Bones, Bones starring ANN GILMORE, CARRIE PHIFER and BETTY WILBERT, directed by JAMES PARKER, and produced by tycoon JEROME Big Dollar PATSWALDO JEWELL. We stop by the Crest for lunch and find that it is owned and operated by JOHN WILSON and MCKINELY SMITH and the head wiater is none other than EMANUEL WITHERSPOON. Some of the fabulous waitresses are ALMETA DAWSON, NAOMI COZART, IRENE EDWARDS, SARAH HUNT, and MILDRED NIXON. Running the dishwasher in the back is none other than ROGER Fat Daddy ADAMS. After an enjoyable lunch we venture down Eclipse Boulevard where we find a magnificent array of shops, such as the fabulous Moon Shoe Shop, selling shoes designed by Miss FLORENCE GORHAM. Next door to Moon Shoes, we find a lingerie shop owned and operated by GLORIA GWYN, CLARA MCDOWELL, GLENDA TEAGUE, and JOAN ARMSTRONG. They specialize in Moon Mist Lingerie. Oh, oh, oh! We run into a little trouble. The taxi breaks down. We call for a tow truck and guess what? ROSCOE MICKLE is the driver. As we approach the garage, we see CLENZO JONES washing space cars. While waiting for our taxi, we pick up the local newspaper which is edited by EDWARD JOHNSON. One of his staff m e m b e rs is gossip columnist, BA RBA RA DILLARD. PATRICIA BULLOCK is doing a Dear Pat column and the sports writer is none other than TOMMY CRANK. We find that NELSON GUTHRIE has been sued for bigamy by MARY L. SMITH and the judge presiding is none other than WILLIE A. CO1-IEN. As we turn to the sports page, we find that ROBERT JACKSON has broken all records. He has pole-valted 20 U2 feet. FRANK BOWENS is now head track coach at Moon University and CHARLES CARTER is an English instructor there. GEORGE FOREE is head basketball coach and his team has just won the M.I.A.A. tournament 1Moon Interplanetary Astronaut AssociationJ. In the latest political news, President FLOYD PLYMOUTH has just chosen a new cabinet: CLARENCE CHAMBERS, LEWIS ROLAND, B EV E RLY BERRY, IM OG ENE SNUGGS, CALVIN STEPHENS, and AUDREY HAYNES. Our taxi is ready and so we are going to Comet City Hotel to check in. When we reach there, we find that the proprietors of fabulous CometCity are DONALD FAISON and SAMUEL JOHNSON. We find some illustrous guests there. They are MARY PETTIFORD, GLORIA MCALLISTER, SHIRLEY ZOLLICOFFER, ZENOBIA HINES and PAULINE DAWSON. We dress and go to the fabulous night club, the Big Dipper, op e ra t e d by BILLY SU DDE R TH and ADOLPHUS HUNTER. The b a r t e nd e r is JOSEPH DANIELS ac- companied by two barmaids, SHELVA SMITH and GLORIA REYNOLDS. The club features the Sattelite Shakers starring CHRISTINE DANCY and all the little Shakers. They include ETI-LEL MOORE, RUBY POWELL, JANICE INABINETT, MARY ISLER, ANNETTE HAIRSTON, LILLIAN KISER and PEGGY FREEMAN. MQ - C' vuvw-1 ZS: 133914 At the piano we find FLORA COOPER. Guest stars for the evening are CARL BENNIX and EDNA GALES and directing the orchestra is WILLIE PRIDE. The orc he stra consists of DIANA DAVIS, JOYCE JOHNSON, FOSTER LASSITER, TYRONE SCALES, SHELDA HARDY, JACQUELINE I-IAMRIC K, MARKETHIA BALDWIN, MARVIN SETZER, and JAMES GOOLSBY. Looking around the night club, we see many famous celebrities, such as: CLIFTON BOWIE, CARRIE CLARK, LAURA BARBER, CAPITOLA BEATTY, CAROLYN GOSS, MARGO A N D R EW S, and JANI E ALDRIDGE. Miss EDDIS REINHARDT is the greatest with her impersonations. We are invited to a party at 444 Milkway Drive at the home of Mr. and Mrs. JAMES C. YOUNG. Mrs. Young is the former debutante Miss DONREE FOSTER. While at the party we find that IVORY ROBERTS and MILO STEWART are owners of the Ro-Mo Clothing Company. During the party, JUANITA CARTER and WILLIE RICHARDSON announce their engagement. Miss Carter is offered a gown by the designers WILLACENA MCCOY, GLORIA FULLER, and LORRAINE LESANE. We return to the hotel for a good night's sleep. The next day we are invited to tour the new hospital which has just opened and find that head nurse is Miss GLORIA YOUNGUE. We also find that DELORES THOMPSON becam e so interested in cardiovascular diseases that she is the heart surgeon for the hospital. Some of the nurses on the staff are DOROTHY KNIGHT, HELEN DOBY, VIRGINIA FONVILLE, HELEN SMITH, GLORIA ROGERS, VALLIE PARKER, and DONNA WILLIAMS. After we leave the hospital, we cross University spaceway and enter the suburbs, Moon Valley. On the left resides DORIS HICKS, She is now Mrs. Lutheran Wiley and is busy bringing up the little L, T. 's. CLARICE GLENN, MARGIE STRICKLAND, FELICIA WYNECOFF, MARVA STEVENS, and ELVA SMITH are nurses in the new Moon Valley homes. The beauty salon in the community is owned by LUCRETIA BROWN and operated by QUEENIE WIGGINS, SARAH MILES, RUTH PET T IFOR D and fe a tu rin g the fabulous hair stylists QUINTON THOMAS and LEMUEL MONTGOMERY. Meanwhile back in a crater COZY HARDY, BETTY ELLER, JENNIE ROGERS, and VELMA HAMLET are attending FRANKLYN HOOPER's Frank-Tanny's Reducing Class to keep those fine shapes. BOBBIE COLLINS, ARNETTA MA R C U S, SHIRLEY PULLEN, FRANCIS COCKERI-IAM and LORETTA COUSSINS have secured teaching jobs in the Space Cadet School. MARY FORNEY is now working on a new water-proof diaper and guess who is helping her: CYNTHIA GARDNER and POLLY JOYCE. JACQUELINE WALLACE has opened up a dance studio. Some of the instructors are ALYCE BARBER, ZEOLA BALDWIN, MARY FLOWERS and MARIE JACOBS. GWYN JONES, ELLA LITTLE, and CO RRINE MINTZ have opened a shop for tall girls. ROSAMOND HAIRSTON is now a b e auty consultant on the skin. DOROTHY HUNTER, NORMA STRABERRY, SELMA SMITH and CATHERINE GRAHAM are now big-time bakers. They are putting holes in doughnuts. WILLIE DAVIS and DORSEY KEITH still aren't satisfied. They are now aiming for greater heights transferring their residences and families to Pluto. SHIRLEY WARREN has become so interested in personality that she is now teaching a course on the moon called Personality on the Moon. Mrs. SYRILDA SMITH is the matron of the new girls dormitory at Moon University. Ever since we joined the class of 62 , we thought we would go places and reach great heights. We think we did great. What do you think? ASHA RALASON EDWINA CAMPBELL ' 5--.S Class Pocm We grave and earnest Seniors, bidding farewell As we leave Winston-Salem Teachers College, Would like to acknowledge our gratitude to you For aiding us in the acquisition of knowledge. Valuing your counseling as leaders, Prizing the memories we've shared, We'll forever hold your name aloft, Alma Mater, with Thee, none could be compared We've striven diligently to reach this goal with encouragement, disappointments and zeal. You've helped us travel this long, rugged road, So you can understand how proud we feel. We've rejoiced and sighed together And applied the golden rule in life's game of ball, Expressing our interest through trials and errors, Avowing together, we would rise or fall. Continuing to aspire for success, We'll meet Fate with a smile, And strive with a dauntless spirit, Remembering Thee all the while. Now from old T.C. we must depart- That which each class must do, Praying that you'll hold dear to your heart, The Class of Nineteen Hundred, Sixty-Two. Written by: Frances Ruth Cockerham 32 q- Class Song Dear Ole Teachers College Tune Over the Rainbow Dear Ole Teachers College We love you, We will never forget you No matter what we do. You have always helped us Made our future bright, In our hearts you will stay clear Beautiful Red and White. On this campus we have trod But now its time for us to part, and lea We'll always keep you in our hearts And hold you, Alma Mater, high So please believe us. Somewhere over the rainbow We must go Please believe that we love you So much you'll never know. Written by: Edna Louise Gales 33 ve you 4 W , '45 L b x. -.1 .Ig . .X.
