Characters: Members of the 1959 Senior Class. Setting: Winston-Salem Teachers College. . By-Norma Lamb ACT I The curtains open. The class of 1959 entered the WSTC in September 1955, seeking a higher education with the hopes of securing the B.S. degree. During Orientation Week we became acquainted with each other and soon became ad- justed to our new environment. At the end of the Week we were eager to start working with our class advisor, Miss Florence T. Butler. Many of us began to participate in the extra-curricular activities on the campus of the college. Soon it was Homecoming season. We chose as attendant to Miss ,T. C. the lovely Grace Rowland to represent our c ass. The Student Council sponsored an all College Talent Contest. The first prize was won by the Freshman Class. With the coming of the Winter Quarter, we found ourselves in the process of electing cap- able class leaders. The olficers were Calvert Smith, Presidentg Sophia Bai ey, Secretaryg Beatrice Robinson, Treasurerg Cornelia Sibert and Eva Smith, Student Council Members. In December we presented our first chapel program entitled Living Madonnas. The Freshman-Sophomore Dance climaxed the first act of our drama. The curtains slowly closed as the marvelous year ended. ACT II The curtains opened swiftly. In the fall of 1956 many of us were determined to accomplish more this year than we had in the past. We were again progressing under the same class officers' capable leadership. Homecoming time arrived. We chose the adorable Elma Fulp to serve as attendant to Miss T. C.'s court. Several of our young men engaged in the various sports offered at the college. Our basket- ball team won the CIAA Championship Tournament. Rufus McClendon played and Fred Davis was a member of this team. As the action of the drama continued, we found some of our Sophomores making significant achievements. Young women were chosen Sweethearts and queens for fraternities. Creek- dom claimed many girls and fellows. Names appeared on the rosters of the Band, the Choir, the Drama Guild and other organizations. A large group made the honor roll. One of our outstanding organizations, the NAACP, crowned Ruth Goolsby, who made a regal queen. The last big effort for the year was the Freshman-Sophomore Parisian Ball. We left T. C. with great anticipation for the coming year. ACT III The curtains opened again on our Junior year. Some of us were asked to be big sisters and brothers to the Freshman c ass during their Orientation Week. New officers were chosen to lead us through this glorious year. -Iaccgueline Martin, Presidentg Kennetta Hairston, Secretary: Comelia Sibert, Treasurerg Elma Fulp an Lorenzo Dixon, Student Council Members. During Homecoming, our class candidate for Miss T. C. was Princess Simmons. Class Histor Our next great task was that of taking the junior Tests. We gave a big sigh of relief when they were over. In honor of Elias Gilbert, one of our classmates who is an outstanding track star, we pre- sented a chapel program. Herbert Conaway also made an excellent record in track. Calvert Smith rated high in baseball. He was also on the football team with William Kauk- eano, Walter Gaines, james Webster and Billy Williams. The outstanding nurse of the year was Hazel Catherine Thompson. The best Actor Award in the Drama Tournament went to Elliott Thompson. Prelette McDowell was chosen Miss Harvest Queen The student body voted Miss Nora Lamb the Lady of the Month Mary White a newcomer to our class was elected 1nto a State SNEA oE1ce A picked group of choir members toured the North m the spnng of that year junior nurses were most valuable during the fall eprdenuc in Winston Salem That group of nurses was the largest to leave T C for affiliation 1n New York Maryland and Tennessee juniors of our class were charter members of Alpha Phz Sigma a National Honor Society They were jacquellne Martin Herbert Conaway Shirley Carson and Calvert Smith Officers for the coming year were elected as follows Herbert Conaway President Odell Watson Vice President Vencle Barrett, Secretary Nora Lamb Treasurer jacquelme Martin and Calvert Smlth, Student Councll Members The theme of our jumor Senxor Prom was Rendezvous of Stars The reception m Pegram Hall before the dance surpassed in glamour all previous occasions This helped to make the Prom a success As the school year came to an end, the curtams closed on a happy rising Senior Class ACT IV Finally the curtams opened again At last we were Senlors The class officers assumed their posxtions of leadership The Yearbook Staff began to work on the 1959 RAM We looked forward to doing our Student Teaching because we knew this was an rmportant step toward graduation The trained Senior nurses returned from afllhatxon and were welcomed to the campus The Seniors last Homecoming amved Betty Pearson our candidate for Miss T C made a fashionable appearance on every occasion The campaign activities were adrolt Dons Burke a Senior won the title M1ss Ram Elma Fulp was runner up All contestants were presented to the pubhc in the Homecommg parade on a decorated float After the fall Drama Guild Contest, the best actress award was presented to Nora Lamb Billy Williams james Webster and Calvert Smith were great assets to the football team William Kaukeano served as statrshclan for the football and basketball teams during the year They were Dorothy Allison Sophia Barley Katrena Baldwm Shirley Carson Herbert Conaway jacquellne Martin Calvert Smith Henry Thomton and Thomas Thornton Our gift to the college was a life size bust of Elias Gilbert who brought our class and the college world wide fame Mr Hamlet Coore was the sculptor We still have to look forward in the spring to Honors Day May Day and the Prom We plan to graduate as financial members of the T C Alumm ASSOCIRUOII Commencement Day will climax the drama We shall leave dear old T C and our most beloved advisor Miss Florence T Butler After the CUI't3lIlS close we shall go forth to other Belds of endeavor We have gamed much here but we must leam to produce as future leaders in our own environments Page Nineteen . . , . , . The track team is one of the hardest working teams in the conference, if not the hardest. Coach Ross constantly drives his boys, for he is a strong advocate of the theory that practice makes perfect. The one factor about the team that is applicable to its success is that the members on the team are extremely close to each other.
