CHAPTER III We returned to school in September, 1953, with refreshed spirits after completing a hard year of study which crowned us as full-pledged juniors. Our class ofiicers for this year were: President, Fred Thornton, Secretary, Imogene McKnight, Treasurer, William Henderson. Our class consisted of 159 members, a loss of 9 students. During this year, we were well represented in the field of sports. In football fifteen boys exhibited fine play, in baseball six boys represented our classg in basketball Eve boys showed their ability and cooperative spirit, and in track and field athletics, we were represented by six fine athletes. In addition to sports, we engaged in other activities and made other achieve- ments. Our class won first prize for the best play in the annual tournament, and also the prize for selling the most tickets for the tournament. We also gave several chapel exercises during the year for which we merited much appraisal. Our junior candidate for Miss T. C. was Miss Eleanor King. The contest was a close one in which Miss King lost to her opponent, thus having to serve as first attendant to the queen. Our junior year ended successfully with four of our classmates being initiated into the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. These were Misses Josephine Ardrey, Clarice Graham, Vivian Lewis, and Mr. James Cox. CHAPTER IV In September, 1954, our forces again, for the last time, encamped upon the grounds of our college. We were now dignified seniors, ready to take the final step in preparing ourselves for our life careers. We started the year with a bang by pushing our candidate for Miss T. C. on to victory. This queen was none other than Miss Vivian Crutchfield of Balti- more, Maryland. We also won recognition in having sold the most tickets for the tourna- ment plays for two times. One of our class members, Miss Julia Lewis, won a prize as the best actress Our officers for this year were: President, Fred Thornton, Secretary, Imogene McKnight, Treasurer, Janice Stinson. Although we were not highly represented in sports by quantity, we were highly represented by quality. In football we had eight representativesg in base- ball, 4 representatives, in basketball, 2 representatives. As the senior year gave us the opportunity to do student teaching, only about two thirds of us were on campus at any time during the year. But even that did not incapacitate us. We continued to tread onward. We began working on our yearbook, under the leadership of Josephine Ardrey, our Editor-in-Chief, and her assistant, Selwyn Clyburn: Three members of our senior class were selected as candidates for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for the year 1955. They are: Misses Josephine Ardrey, Clarice Graham, and Vivian Lewis. One of the final honors of the senior class was the election of Miss Catherine Sudderth of Hickory, N. C., as Miss Teachers College Lady of the Year for 1955. So from freshmen to seniors we have had our thrills and joys, our sadnesses and disappointments, but we have looked forward to the future and tried to pre. pare ourselves to serve humanity. l 4 w

CLASS HISTORY CHAPTER l On the morning of September 25, 1951, a group of 175 students were eager to start a new phase of their lives-that of a college freshman. After mingling with honest-to-goodness college ladies and gentlemen, we discovered that the excitement of that first day proved to be almost too much for us. Our first week of orientation gave us a great start which we cherished all the way through our four-year career. During our first year, we were very pleased to find ourselves under the able leadership of Mr. H. L. Clark, class advisor, Mr. Jessie Jacobs, president, Miss Imogene McKnight, secretary, and Mr. Paul Lassiter, treasurer. Homecoming found us well represented in all extra-curricular activities, including sports, clubs, and societies. Miss Clarice Graham was elected as freshman attendant to Miss T. C. Representing our class on the football team were: Clyde DeBerry, Stephen Holman, Clarence Jones, Paul Lassiter, Wilbert Mc- Knight, Arthur Page, Fred Parker, Willie Simmons, Charles Williams, and James Wright. Those who made the basketball team were: Fred Blyther, Clarence Jones, Fred Parker, Bobby Pennington, Calvin Price. On the track team we had: Eglon Bailey, Thomas Carson, Richard Grey, Stephen Holman, Vincent Thomp- son, and Louis Wyatt. Representing us on the baseball team were: Arthur Page, Fred Parker, and Willie Simmons. Although our president, Jessie Jacobs, was called into the armed forces, we felt that our first year was quite successful, ending with a very nice social, which we shared with the sophomore class. CHAPTER Il In September, 1952, we arrived once more at Winston-Salem Teachers College, this time as distinguished sophomores who were completely shed of the traditional greenery of freshmen, and looking forward to a highly successful school year. Eager to learn, and equally as eager to exemplify the definite collegiate growth which began one year earlier, we ardently struggled to continue raising the standards, especially for the freshmen just entering. This year was all that we had hoped it would be. With 168 students on roll and all hearts together, we selected the late Miss Genobia Dunstan as the sophomore attendant to Miss T. C. And charming indeed she was. To add another contribution to Homecoming several members of our class played on the football team. Our basketball players for the year were Clarence Jones, Fred Parker, Fred Blyther, Calvin Price, and Paul Lassiter. As time rolled on we began to formulate our ideas about various organiza- tions and goals. Many of us pledged and joined sororities and fraternities and other clubs on the campus. Miss Clarice Graham was elected as Princess Charming for this year. As early spring came, flowers began to burst into bloom, and so did we. Athletes on the track and baseball teams practiced hard and made a grand record for the school. And as the birds began singing, so did the choir. Members of the sophomore class who had jointed the choir included: Selwyn Clyburn, Vivian Crutchfield, Dona Ford, Blanche Gregg, William Henderson, Aurelia McFadden, Annie Vaughn, Ada Watson, Audrey Thomas, and Catherine Sudderth. Throughout the year, we gave many chapel programs. Among these we can't forget Eugene Walcott's beautiful violin renditions, the musical accompaniments of Blanche Gregg, Selwyn Clyburn, and Vivian Lewis, Ellia Griffin's poetry, and the solos of Dona Ford and Ada Watson. The freshman and sophomore prom, which was the biggest dance of the year for us as a class, was quite a dilly. I Thus ended a successful sophomore year, another episode in the story which is to prove eventually to be the happiest phase of our lives. 13
