.-nl --Q -Q . 71. Ja- - .fv ' ' - :- l'4....1.. 4.r.4mn,r..,.. ... ., FOREWORD Every lamp must be lit and every star set to glow. The same is true with people- each of us must have a life lighter. Here at T. C , some of us have polished and lighted our lamps, and now they glow with profuse manifestations of outstanding achievements in various fields of endeavor. Some of us will strive to attain more than our radiant lamps, our destinations being the sun, the stars, and the moon. We know that in the future years a few of us might reach these goals, others of us will have to find consolation through the capture of a few clouds, and some of us will find satisfaction by merely polishing our lamps and letting them emnnate their light in ultimate splendor. The pages in this, the Yearbook of 1953, will serve to bring back recollections of our start to attain our goals. We will always be profoundly grateful to T. C. for providing us with the essential instructions and materials by which we were able to polish and light our lamps. May they send forth their glorious rays universally so that we may enlighten the hearts and minds of those whom we are destined to encounter. 4

THE PRESI DENT'S MESSAGE Greetings to the Friends, Alumni, and Students of the Winston-Salem Teachers Collegeg and sincere congratulations to this year's Senior Class for this 1953 issue of the Ram . It is a worthy successor to the talented productions that have preceded it. The Winston-Salem Teachers College continues its responsibility of preparing its students for citizenship and service in this time of tension, fears, and anxieties- this period of transition. In this uncertain age, our task has grown considerably more difficult-training teachers in even wider academic and co-curricular activities than may be indicated within the covers of this book. Our task includes deep concern with the full exercise of democracy and with a renewed dedication to the basic principles of our founders. The initiative, talent, and skill exhibited in the preparation and organization of this book is only one example of the maturity and attainment of our youth today. May they continue to be blessed with opportunity for service and the courage to meet their responsibilities. Sincerely, F. I.. ATKINS, President 6 4. 'Q I 1 1 , 4,4 L.
