-.,,,,..i .,-,, ...,-,...5 . ig? 9 IQ ADMINISTRATION - LIBRARY BUILDING . HISTORICAL SKETCH I The Winston-Salem Teachers College was founded as the Slater Industrial Academy on September 28, 1892. In 1995 the school was recognized by the State of North Carolina, and in 1897 it was chartered by the State as the Slater Industrial and State Normal School. In 1925 the General Assembly of North Carolina recognized the school's leadership in this fieldg granted the school a new charter, extending its curricular to four years above high II school: changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College. The College became the first Negro institution in the United States to grant degrees to teach in the elementary grades. In recent years the State legislature has granted funds to the institution for the construction and renovation of buildings-namely, Bickett Hall, Atkins Hall, the Health Center, and the I new gymnasium. I In 1892 approximately twenty-five students were enrolled at the school, and there was one teacher. Today, there are over seven hundred students enrolled at the College, and sixty- three members comprise the faculty and staff. Yes! Time really marches on!
