CHAPTER l ln the fall of I9-13, approximately I60 timid but eager and ambitious stu- dents appeared on the campus of the Winston-Salem Teachers College. Yes, we were not only scared, but equally as green. ldon't suppose that a 'igreener class has ever enrolled in any college. Hardly had the orientation program, introduc- ing us into what was expected of us as college students, ended, before we began to find out in actuality that what was being expected of us was no idle dream, and though it was hard, so very hard, we set out with diligence and determination to work hard, to do our best. and to try to attain or even approximate the ideals set up by those who were charged with our intellectual and spiritual develop- ment. So busy were we kept, that we soon forgot all about being timid, ceased being so very green, and began showing the various abilities and talents which the class possessed. We organized that year with the following officers: Claretta McNeill, Presi- dent, Virginia Quamily, Vice-Presidenti Bernice Howard, Secretaryg Pecolia Far- rish, Treasurer: Miss Remitha Spurlock, Class Adviser. To the scholastic world, we contributed Mary O'Neill, Bernice Howard, Louise Knight, Thelma McNeal, Sadie Bynum, Virginia Quamily, Burleen jack- son, Doris Becton and Helen Mashburn, all of whom were Honor Roll students. Prizes for high scholastic honors were won by Bernice Howard and Helen Mash- burn. To athletics, we contributed Leonard Dunovant, Edward Ballard, and Hugh Dobson to football. To basketball we contributed Lucille Joyner and Terry john- son. To the music world, we contributed Ciaynelle McKnight, Virginia Quamily, Vlfillie jones, Queenie Gardner, To dramatics, we gave Velma Alston, Mary O'Neill, Margrett Hanes. Dur- ing this year Velma Alston was crowned Miss Queen of Dramaticsf' To the social world, we contributed Pecolia Farrish as our candidate for the coveted honor of being crowned Miss T. C. We did not win, but we were not discouraged. The year ended. The first milestone in our educational careers had been at- tained. CHAPTER ll Returning to T, C. in September 1944 after a pleasantly spent vacation, and a whole year of rich and varied experiences, we were most anxious to achieve even greater honors during the year. To get an early start, we organized our- selves early in the fall with the following ofhcers: Virginia Quamily, President: Mary O'Neill, Vice-President: Bernice Howard, Secretary: Velma Alston, Assist- H11 ant Secretary: Helen Mashburn. Treasurer. After we were organized, we pledged ourselves to take part in all activities provided by the College and to so conduct ourselves as to bring honor to our class. Our specific contributions for the year are indicated below: To the Dance Group we gave Mary O'Neill, Margie Wells, and Hattie Dan- iels. To the Band we gave Porphinia Hannon, Clara Thompson, Annie Gibbs, and Clara Mack. To the Orchestra, we gave Clara Thompson and Hattie Daniels. To the Cosmopolitan Club we contributed Louise Knight, Porphinia Hannon, Margaret Gannaway, Doris Becton, Annie Gibbs, and Burleen jackson. To the Sigma Kappa Delta Club we gave Virginia Quamily, Mary O'Neill, Bernice Scales, Bernice Howard, Ann McE.lvain, Velma Alston, and Helen Mash- burn. To the social world we gave Annie Gibbs as our candidate for the honor of being Miss T. C. Again, we lost, but we were not discouraged. To the music world and to the intellectual world, we made our usual num- ber of contributions. For scholastic honors during the year, Bernice Howard and Elizabeth Grinton received prizes. The year ended. The second milestone in our educational careers had been successfully attained. CHAPTER Ill Time was marching rapidly on. On our return to T. C. in the fall of I9-15, we were proud juniors. It was a little hard at Hrst for us to realize that we were now -luniorsallpperclassmen, but we were, and we were so proud of ourselves. Aft- er spending some little time greeting each other, reviewing events that hap- pened over the summer months, we settled down to business with the following officers: Wilbert Todd, President, Elizabeth Grinton, Vice-President, Bernice Howard, Secretaryg Burleen jackson, Treasurer, Mr. H. Wortham, Adviser. As in former years, we made distinct contributions to the various phases of college life-the intellectual, cultural, social. Among the members of the class who won prizes for outstanding work in different activities were: Bernice How- ard and Helen Mashburn. For demonstrated ability to beautify her surroundings Stella Friday was our winner, and for citizenship qualities, Carrie johnson. Our candidate for the honor of Miss T. C. was Hazel Davis. After being losers for the preceding two years, we were at last successful, for our candidate was selected and crowned Miss T. C., the queen of all T. C. One of the most outstanding events in the social life of students at T. C. is the annual junior-Senior Prom. To this occasion all students look with anticipa- tion. This year, we the Juniors were hosts and hostesses to the Seniors and their friends. For this occasion, our motif was a garden scene on a beautiful summer's evening. The decorated dance hall was beautiful, the music was grand, the guests appropriately dressed, men in tuxedos, women in beautiful evening gownsg is it any wonder that everyone said that this was the most beautiful, and the most TWT enjoyable Prom ever to be given at T. C.? The year ended. The third milestone in our educational careers had been successfully attained. CHAPTER IV September, I9-46, found us eager but somewhat saddened for this our last trip to T. C. Eagerly, we occupied the seats reserved for Seniors. It seemed as if we never would succeed in reaching this goal, but now we had, and now we were Seniors sitting in the Senior seats, Seniors assuming the responsibilities of our attained position in the educational world. Now we were Seniors who were to do student teaching, Seniors who were to set the intellectual, cultural and so- cial pace of the College. We launched out on this our final voyage with the following officers in charge: Elizabeth Cirinton, President, Sadie Bynum, Vice-President, Bernice How- ard, Secretaryg Porphinia Hannon, Assistant Secretary: Burleen jackson. Treas- urer. Our first major event of the year was the Home Coming game. As our rep- resentative for the coveted honor of being crowned Miss T. C., we nominated Hai' tie Williams. As it had become something of a custom for the representative of the junior Class to win this coveted honor, we approached the contest with fear and much misgivings. imagine our happiness when our representative was adjudged the winner. Another triumph for the Seniors, the first class to have the honor of having Miss T. C. selected from its ranks two consecutive years. Ad- ditional honor was ours when our entry in the Home Coming Parade won first prize in the College section. ln addition to the above firsts, we achieved further success in other activities. With the organization of a Student Council, our Class President, Elizabeth Grinton, became the first President of the First Student Council at T. C. joseph Swain became the first President of the Future Teachers of America, Alpha Theta Pi Chapter. Burleen jackson became the first President of the Y. W. C. A. As usual we continued to serve with honor and distinction in other organiza- tions, the Cosmopolitan Club, Band, Orchestra, Choir. Now our work is almost over, the end is almost here. The last milestone of this phase of our educational career has been reached. Now what of the future Q' For some of us there will be Graduate School, for others marriage, for yet others careers in various types of jobs, but wherever We go, into whatever avenues of labor we shall be directed by the forces of circumstances, we shall strive to be leaders good and true, as you have taught us T. C. To you, T. C., we give our most sincere appreciation for helping us to make of ourselves the persons we ought to be. Xve go, but we shall always remember your teachings, and shall love you always.
