Stephanie Poolheco scans through some college catalogs. Some graduates will choose to enter the services after graduation. with surety and hope Future homemakers, Jodi Manzanares and Lisa Romero, in action. 4 Some graduates will choose to enter the fast-food services. Job security is a main concern of future graduates. Each graduating senior must face his her own future, and there are many different aspects of our future that we must consider, such as economic security. What type of job or jobs will we hold in the future? Will they be secure? How will finances and debts be handled? Another aspect of our future is the armed services-many graduates will choose to enter one of the services, either straight out of high school or after college (R.O.T.C.). This is another option among many. We obviously must decide which college we are to attend, if any. and how to pay for its expenses. College is the choice of most f the W.H.S. graduates, we believe. These are only few of the different things that need to be considered by the graduates, because what they decide to do now and how they do it will most likely affect the rest of their lives. Yearbook King was crowned K ing enny This year’s Meteor King was Kenneth Evans III. He was very active in such things as Choir. Speech and Drama. Technical Crew. W Club, Chess Club, and Indian Club over his four years at WHS. He was also a manager for varsity football, varsity wrestling, and varsity baseball. Not much was known about the other aspects of Kenneth's life, including what he does for excitement when he’s not going to school. Who knows... he might come back to the class reunion and have a more exciting life than the rest of us!! Queen chosen for “bossy” style Sherry Moss Sherry “Yvonne” Moss was involved in many school activities. You might have seen her playing in the band or bossing people around in the S Club. She was also secretary of the Honor Society and chairperson of the prom committee. Sherry’s curious nature, out going style, and fun-loving ways, have made her what she is today (a terrible pain that won’t go away). 7 The good life is on its way Henry Smith whispers to Manuel Montoya. “Smile for the photographers!” Jerilyn Otero searches for lost homework. What is that big smile for Mark Pollard? Maybe we should ask Elisha Johns... “I give up!”.replies Pamela Salazar. Seniors parade around during a pep assembly. 8 These students seem to be having too much fun. Kelsey Begaye works on his muscles. Above-Jolene Pfulb gets into the pep assembly. Bottom Right: Junior Reps:Mark Pollard, Cristine Horner, Elisha Johns, Amber Meritt, Gina White, Devon Sawyer, Sandi Williams. 10 Chosen for excellence This year's Dedicatee is Virginia Summersgill. She has been teaching for 19 years. Some of the subjects she has taught are English, typing, and remedial reading. Currently, she is the school librarian and the sponsor for Honor Society. Mrs. Summersgill is also the Curriculum Coordinator for Junior High and High School. She also has helped with musicals and has accompanied students for solos in choir. We are glad to have such a dedicated person in our school. Dedicatee 11 Yearbook examined future! Micki Williams and Sandi Williams discuss their homework. Becky Conatser types a sports story. 12 Stephen Ortiz avoids the classroom. Nicole Nimtz cuts important pictures. Sharon Joe files layout folders. Donnell Mayberry and Aaron Duboise check over their work. 13 Mr. Taylor: “Hurry up and take the picture!! Vice-president Virginia The 1988-89 Student Body Officers had a very busy year. They attended a Leadership Conference at the beginning of the year and it really motivated them. They tried really hard to get everyone involved in school activities and to promote school spirit and pride. They were really interested in helping students with drug problems and started a drug awareness program. This year's officers really cared about the student body. Council Inducts Buzzards Above: The induction of the BUZZARDS!!! Below: Virginia presides over a meeting. STUDENT COUNCIL 1988-89 Future flyers get their wings Student Council was a very entusiastic group this year. A few of the members attended a Leadership Conference in Show Low early in September. They came back with many exciting new ideas to promote school spirit and to get more people involved in school activities. One of the funnier things they came back with was the National Order of Buzzards. If you don’t know what this means ask a member today. Student Council did their usual activities such as the slave auction and the Howdy Dance. They also started a drug awareness program. Council members included Virginia Hancock. Steve Ortiz. Becky Conatser. Elana Rodriguez. Kristi Ramsey. Michelle Gonzales. Lynne Baca. Sativa Peterson. Tim Wilcox, Yolanda Montano. Paula Parsons. Doug Walton. Paul Baca. Lori Sheets. Adam Leeds. Chad Adams. Jennifer Huckabee. Jolene Pfulb. Jeff Hardy. Stacey Baca. Shan Almon, Shannon Long, Betsy Simonton. Sandi Williams. Micki Williams, Kelli Bull. Mark Pollard. Stephanie Goodman, and Amber Meritt. 15 Activities were outstanding!! Art classes showed a great deal of artistic ability. FACULTY 1988-89 Governing Board Dodie Montoya Lucy Horner Joe Benham 18 As a result of the 1988 elections in November, this year's governing board was Sue Hancock, Terry DuBoise, Joe Benham, Lucy Horner, and Dodie Montoya. The new members were Terry and Dodie, while Lucy retained her seat. Joe and Sue’s seats were not up this year. Among the many things the board did this year, they approved giving 1 4 credit a semester to pep band members. Their program of building improvements to the elementary schools was continued this year. too. Sue Hancock Terry DuBoise Wayne Peters Superintendent C. R. Coaches: Bob Bordner, Rick Cue, and Charles Gover. 89 The 1988 edition of the Winslow football team experienced an exciting season. After a slow start due to a new coaching staff and offensive system, the Bulldogs pulled off a 7 4 1 season and a berth in the state quarterfinals. Although the team lost many fine young men to graduation, the coaching staff felt that many outstanding players will return for the 1989 season. The Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the playoffs this year. Hopefully, the Bulldogs of 1989 will accept the challenge of continued success. Derrick Land carries the ball for a TD! Head coach Liz McLaws commented. “I was disappointed, and I thought we would finish much higher; however, I really enjoyed this year. They are a great bunch of girls to work with.” The team ended the season with a barbecue out in the boonies where the underclassmen said farewell to the six seniors. The 1988 Bulldog Volleyball team had a winning, yet disappointing season. They were one of the most talented teams WHS has ever put on the court. The excellent hitters, setters, and back row had pride and worked very hard at practice. The team fell short in a few crucial games and faced Snowflake in the divisional tournament. The Bulldogs bowed to the Lobos for the third time. A win would have put the Bulldogs into the state tournament. The Bulldogs ended the season with 13 wins and 9 losses overall and 7-5 in conference play where they finished fifth. Below; Becky Conatser and Sharon Cox relax during a doubleheader. Top Ten Seniors Ready for Future Challenges Top ten students were good with figures. 169 We, Barry Lancaster and Lita Gonzales, being of demented minds and tall short bodies, do hereby bequeath to Mr. Taylor two more weird and crazy (but fun??) people like us to take over our old jobs. To the future editors, the patience to put up with all of the gripes, moans, and groans from everyone else, the ability to take charge, and the ability to keep their heads when nobody likes their ideas. That may or may not happen, but it did with us, we can tell you. To the rest of the staff, we leave the ability to make another yearbook almost (but not quite) as good as this one. To our friends, good luck in the future, and stay out of trouble with the police. To our past and present teachers and the rest of the W.H.S. staff, thanks a million-you proved that we weren’t brain-dead after all. To everyone else, NOTHING!!! 171 Frank Kohler “...He loved his youth, and his youth has become eternal. John Buchan Robert Varner “Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith let us to the end dare to do our duty as we understand it. Abraham Lincoln 172
