They had a great season! 13 DOGS' VICTORIOUS IN HOMECOMING 'S3 Homecoming S3 was a great success for the awesome Bulldog squad. Coming off a slow start, the Dogs raced to a 16-12 margin beating the Window Rock Scouts and sealing the victory. Pictured at left is the Homecoming dedicatee. Mrs. Jessie Emig. A very supportive fan of all sporting activities. Mark fusaro. and Mary Jane Zale The Verb Care Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 20 new members on October 11. 1983. Students inducted into Honor Society were elected by the teachers of Winslow High School. Students were elected for their leadership in the classroom and in the community, their characteristics. and their willingness to serve. To be a member of Honor Society, you must be in the top 10% of the Junior class with a grade point average of 1.5 or above. Seniors must be in the top 15% of their class and have a grade point average of 2.0 or above. This year Honor Society helped out at the Special Arts Festival. WHERE THE BOYS AREN'T 1983-84 METEOR The 1983-84 Meteor Queen was choosen for her contribution to the school and her class. She has been a Volleyball Mgr. and played basketball. She was a prom candidate her Senior year. We would like to congratulate Vanessa Powell. 24 The 1983 84 Meteor King was choosen for his contribution to the school and his class. He has been in Ruilding trades and has gone and helped at many school functions. We would like to congratulate Ricky Harris. ROYALTY Our winners of this year's Christmas Royalty contest with S781.63 were the Seniors whose candidates were Nelson Tecklenburg and Lillian Rublin. In second place, with S599.20. were the Juniors whose candidates were Dean Roney and Sandy Lee. Third place, with S485.28. were the Sophomores whose candidates were Iliya Hadnot and Karen Pawley. Fourth place, with an embarrassing $30.48. were the Freshmen whose candidates were Brent Lymer and Diane Chacon. This year's total was $1886.59. $580.17. more than last year's total. These canned foods helped feed many needy families for Christmas. 1983 CHRISTMAS ROYALTY 26 This year's annual staff is proud to dedicate the 1983- '84 Meteor to the memory of Mr. N.M. Pinkie'' Walton. Mr. Walton was horn in 1915. and began working at W.H.S. on August 15. 1965. He taught world history, journalism, and world geopraphy. Later. Mr. Walton taught American history. In 1970-1971. Mr. Walton began as a high school counselor. During that time he also taught journalism. From 1971-1980. he was in counseling only, but also sponsored Mat-maids. and helped students obtain scholarships. Mr. Walton retired on June 13. 1980. He worked at the high school for almost 15 years. Mr. Walton was a very active church member. Outside of school, he was involved in Boy Scouts and Rotary. IN MEMORY OF JAMES WHITE 30 The Winslow High School Speech Tearn is a very active group. As 3 group they went to five tourn3ments. including sl3te speech and forensics tournament. 1 he competitors compete in both individual interpretation events and also duo-drama and Lincoln Douglas Debate. The speakers did remarkably well by bringing home awards. TALK TO THE ANIMALS 31 What a bunch of hams! School plays are big events for W.H.S. Drama students. In the play The family Nobody Wanted , two families feuded over the marriage between their love-struck children, portrayed by Owen Kerr and Stephanie Campsen. They sold a variety of snacks and sometimes bought their own merchandize (as shown by Roger and Pat.) Mostly it was a year of scientifically inclined eating machines all packed in one. 1 The Outdoors Ski Club designed for ouidoorsy people, was limited on what they could do this year. Though raising money wasn’t a problem, because of the many activities for fund raising accomplished, places to go was another thing. The group traveled to Slide Rock and had a splash. They have told candy and had their pot lucks. Their hope if to raise enough money to tend Mrs. Nagle and Shelia Paul to Chicago for a FHA convention. Down below we tee the members of FHA. FHA did attend a few mini meets included in their busy year. SOMEONE'S IN THE KITCHEN 40 BUSINESS AS USUAL FBI A has also hjd a very busy year. This year they held the annual FBI A convention here at Winslow High. The convention was a success and a few members achieved first or second place positions. FBI A has also sold candy in order to make trips and other conventions. 41 This year Key Club sponsored the Head Start Christmas present program and the sweetheart dance. They helped out in the Kiwanis pancake breakfast. The matmaids had a year full of new ideas. For example, instead of the usual cheering and helping with scoring and timing, the mat-maids each had ,Secret Wrestlers This idea turned out well. 49 FROSH CHEER Although some school traditions have changed, such as the joining of Meteorettes and Varsity Cheer to make Cheer-Pom. the freshmen and J.V. Two losses were to Coconino and Snowflake they were both down to the wire games. Future looks bright for Bulldog football team. FRESHMEN HAVE AVERAGE SEASON 118 TOUGH YEAR FOR JV’S This year J. V. football team didn't didn't have a good season this year. They ended their season with a record of 0 wins and 7 losses. Many J. V. players were moved up to varsity which didn't help the J. V. team. 119 T'N'T TOUGH 'N Traveling to Peoria, they laced the Douglas Bulldogs in the first round. The intensity level was high as the Bullodgs took the court. This was the year of the Bulldogs. Downing Douglas. Winslow then faced Buckeye. Taking this match in two games, they were placed in the final match against the much taller team. Gerard. Realizing it was going to he a tough game, the Bulldogs stormed out to a 15-3 victory coming with 15 points of a state cham pionship. Winslow then took a convincing lead of 13-3 before Gerard came roaring hack to a 13-13 tie. Before the night was over. Winslow had won the state cham pionship with a perfect record of 6-0. Having all but one starter back from last year's state runner-up squad, the Bulldogs were expected to win everything. Though they got off to a dissappointing 5-3 early season march they fought back to achieve all their goals. First, was the Divisional Tourney hosted by Coconino. Winslow defeated Window Rock and advanced to the finals against Tuba City. The team stormed out to a commanding lead and never looked back. This young team had a lough season having only three experienced players returning from last year's squad. Their small size did not hamper their play because of the great enthusiasm and pride that was present among all athletes. They were State Champions in the 1600 meter relay with a winning time of 3.31.2. Mem hers include Nick kretsede-mas. Doyle Holt Jr.. Iliya Had-not. and Michael Bonner. During dual meets, the Dogs posted a 7-1 record with their only loss coming against Coconino. They were very competitive with a burning desire to be the best. With a dual record of 4-4. the Girls' Track team seemed to he on the wrong track. Though their record was not an indication of the year's achievements, their performances were. T he team compromised of only three seniors Kara Clay. Bonnie Gallegos, and Gene vieve Yazzie, was a young squad who came on strong. They read some of the prophecies and wills, and had a slide show. They also had a skit, which was called Remember When? In this skit they had reviews of 9th grade slave day. IOth grade twirp week. 11 th grade prom decorating. and 12 grade Homecoming and Prom Kings and Queens. The class of 1984 will always have the memories of their high school years.
