achievement Achievement. . .honors earned. Achievement comes in many forms. . .a kingship. . . a membership in a select organization. . .scholastic recognition. Being recognized and honored for effort or ability is very important to the individual. Receiving an award serves as an incentive to assert ones self to do something more than the minimum, to become a leader, a worker, a scholar. During the year students in Winslow High School find many opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and to receive recognition and reward for them. The thrill of being chosen to reign as a king or queen. . .The happiness of being a selected as a member of a select group. . .The pride at realizing efforts in the field of scholastic endeavor have been recognized . . .The sense of privilege at being designated to represent your school in competition or assembly. Even those who may not receive the highest honors but who were considered for them experience, pride, and happiness, and a new determination to do even more the next time. These are important to the individual. These then are the aspects that compose the face of achievement. 1 1

oo upermoN Competition. . .desire to do ones best. Competition comes in many forms. . .the clash of two football teams trying for a touchdown. . .the struggle of two wrestlers desiring to pin or reversal. . . the desire to hear the crack of a bat and ball. . . the exertion of a basketball player attempting to make two points. The world of competition as bounded by athletics is an important part of Winslow High School life. The desire to win motivates an athlete to do his best. . .tire maximum he can give. All the athletes' senses and reactions seem to sharpen and quicken as the desire to win forces mental and physical capacities to maximum. Without competition there would be little or no reason to do more than the minimum. This sense of rivalry brings out qualities: teamwork. . . willingness to work with others for die good of the whole. . .and sportsmanship. . . ability to accept results, win or lose. These dicn arc the aspects that comprise the face of competition.
