Conatser, Advisor Ray Wong and Daniel Oplinger, Photographers Julianne Weidinger and Nedra Heath, Business Managers Themes on buttons, doorknobs, or shoestrings. . .Shakespearean plays. . .term papers. . .nouns, verbs, gerunds. . .these are but a few of the things which compose Katherine McAuley's English classes. Mrs. McAulcy is a favorite of students, faculty members, and office personnel. One reason for her popularity is her wonderful sense of humor. Who but she would go cow-girl on Western Stomp Day, wear a potato sack on Twirp Day, or receive information on where Uncle Sam would like to send her as a member of the Peace Corps. Another reason for her popularity is her desire to see that each student is able to get the maximum from her class. She is willing to stay after school and help those who are behind or to talk with those who desire extra information in her field. Many hours are spent in library research as she prepares tor materials which will make her class enjoyable for each student. Many of the members of the Class of 1966 have had Katherine McAuley as their English teacher for three of their four years in high school. During this time they have come to respect her as a friend. For these reasons, we the 1966 Meteor Staff, proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Katherine McAuley. TABLE OP CONTENTS EDUCATION 12 COOPERATION 76 PAR7IOR5T70N 94 ACHIEVEMENT 1 16 competition 128 I Is there only one simple face to the personality of Winslow High School, or are there many complex faces ? Winslow High is like the people who work and study there, and people are complex. Of all faces, classroom education is the most predominant. . .teachers. . .administrators. . . students. . .these compose the face of education. Personality is not complete with only one characteristic. Without other faces to complete that of education, personality would be empty, meaningless. Added to education then are the faces of achievement, honors earned. . .competition, desire to do ones best. . .cooperation, will to work. . .participation, eagerness to be a part. In the 1966 METEOR you will see how the many faces of our school go to make up its complete personality. Education. . .achievement. . .competition . . .cooperation. . .participation. . . these then are the visages of Winslow High School. EDUCATION Education. . . eagerness to leam, willingness to teach. An eager student and a willing teacher are both necessary’ to have a true education. Many tilings come to the mind with the mention of education: term papers. . .tests. . .finals. . .projects due. . .study. . .class discussion. . .lectures. . . these are curriculum. Administrations . . .teachers. . .office workers. . .lowly freshmen. . .struggling sophomores. . .confident juniors. . . mightly seniors. . .these are the people. The freshmen find themselves faced with new experiences. . . class changes, curriculum choices. . . class loyalty. The sophomores are more accustomed to high school life but still liave new encounters. . . biology dissections. . . a new type of literature. . .being upper underclassmen. The juniors are confident and find new courses and honors just for them American history. . .American literature. . .physics. . . class rings. . .the junior prom. The seniors become the rulers and enjoy the activities and studies meant only for THE upperclassmen. . . American government. . .social problems. . . English Literature. . .chemistry'. These then are the aspects that comprise the face of education. COOPERATION Cooperation. . .will to work, conducting a meeting. . .hearing a guest speaker. . .socializing with fellow students. . .carrying through a community service project. Membership in various school organizations teaches one the importance of leadership, assistance, dependability, and service. Organized groups within the school exist for several reasons. . . service. . .honor. . .vocational information and experience. . .development of abilities. . .discussion of common interests. By becoming an active part of such a group one develops his social sense. Leadership is formed as one acts as an officer. The value of being of service is realized as one completes a project which will benefit others. Initiative and reliability are recognized as one works to compile a school publication. By meeting with others whose interests are similar to his own one finds companionship and common ground for recognizing the value of the individual. These then are aspects which compose the face of cooperation. 8 FWnOPATtON Participation. . .eagerness to be a part. . .helping with the production of a play. . .performing in an assembly. . .serving as an officer. . .working as a member. . .playing in the band. . .singing in the chorus . . . being a student AND MORE. Life is not a spectator sport. One can EXIST as a mere student, but he can EXPERIENCE as a participant. The heart of a school does not beat until the educational process is complemented by a student actively becoming a part of the school until he has taken part in a school activity. Then, and only then is he truly a member of the student body. There is a feeling of experiencing as a cheer is led. . .a dialogue is presented. . .a skit is performed. There is a satisfaction that comes when the play is over . . .the routine has been performed. . .the dance is past. . .the diploma has been received. Activities compose a great deal of the students life on campus. When a person is a part he experiences. . . he feels. These then are the aspects which compose the face of education. oo upermoN Competition. . .desire to do ones best. Competition comes in many forms. . .the clash of two football teams trying for a touchdown. . .the struggle of two wrestlers desiring to pin or reversal. . . the desire to hear the crack of a bat and ball. . . the exertion of a basketball player attempting to make two points. The world of competition as bounded by athletics is an important part of Winslow High School life. The desire to win motivates an athlete to do his best. . .tire maximum he can give. All the athletes' senses and reactions seem to sharpen and quicken as the desire to win forces mental and physical capacities to maximum. Without competition there would be little or no reason to do more than the minimum. This sense of rivalry brings out qualities: teamwork. . . willingness to work with others for die good of the whole. . .and sportsmanship. . . ability to accept results, win or lose. These dicn arc the aspects that comprise the face of competition. achievement Achievement. . .honors earned. Achievement comes in many forms. . .a kingship. . . a membership in a select organization. . .scholastic recognition. Being recognized and honored for effort or ability is very important to the individual. Receiving an award serves as an incentive to assert ones self to do something more than the minimum, to become a leader, a worker, a scholar. During the year students in Winslow High School find many opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and to receive recognition and reward for them. The thrill of being chosen to reign as a king or queen. . .The happiness of being a selected as a member of a select group. . .The pride at realizing efforts in the field of scholastic endeavor have been recognized . . .The sense of privilege at being designated to represent your school in competition or assembly. Even those who may not receive the highest honors but who were considered for them experience, pride, and happiness, and a new determination to do even more the next time. These are important to the individual. These then are the aspects that compose the face of achievement. 1 1 EDUCATION SCHOOL BOARD, standing: JAMES ARMSTRONG, WALTER RHYAN. sitting: REVEREND ELLIS GASTON, LUCILLE THOMPSON, CLYDE RHOTON iMr. Booth, superintendent of public schools, heads Winslow's education staff. A teacher's job is not merely the interpretation of written information; he must be prepared to help those students who desire more than a simple, general knowledge of the subject which he teaches. A teacher's ability to stimulate the students' interest to go deeper into a subject is indeed an asset. A teacher has many duties outside the classroom instruction. . .hall duty. . .report cards. . . sponsorship of dances and other student activities. So many and varied are their responsibilities that they touch every phase of student life. MR. EWAN Alg. I, Sr. Math, Alg. II, Plane Geometry MR. Letts MADRiGAL This years Concert Choir was one of the best groups the music department has ever had. The Choir started out this years activities with the SOUNDS OF MUSIC, a musical variety show. The next event was the All-school Christmas program where they performed numbers such as Drummer Boy and O Holy Night. To raise money for the awards given out at the end of the year, and for the trip to the Valley, the Choir put on a Buffet Banquet and concert, an event whioh turned out to be very successful. At Festival this year the Choir received a rating of Superior, which is next to the highest rating a performing group can receive. A select group consisting of three Sopranos, three altos, three tenors, and three basses was chosen at the beginning of the year to make up the Madrigal. The Madrigal performed at all the events as the Concert Choir. A Superior rating was also given to the Madrigal this year at the Festival. All in all the choral part of the music department had a very successful year. CONCERT CHOfR STRJNS ORCHESTRA This year our high school had a full orchestra for the first time. The orchestra made its first performance of the year at the 17th Annual Christmas Concert. Then later on in March they gave a concert with the Concert Choir. It was a huge success. In April, the orchestra and concert choir went on tour to the schools in the surrounding area. We were all very pleased to hear them playing at Baccalaureate. This group has really worked hard under the fine leadership of Mrs. Carolyn Smith. Most of the people in the string section have only played their instruments for two or three years. So as you can see, they have worked hard. We are looking forward to many more years of fine music from this group. FULL ORCHESTRA s-®-’ The Band started off the season by marching at all the home football games. Also they spent many long hours practicing for the many parades which occur during this time of year. It is during this season that the band takes its annual trip to Phoenix. The first concert performance of the concert band was the Christmas program. The band concert held in February was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The band played another concert in May and then at the end of the month they played a number at Graduation. This group has improved greatly this year under the direction of Mr. Thomas O'Kelly. We are sure they will continue the trend upward. concertbond BAND 1 i QBMOR FW Granny.................. She is showing him one of the delicious fish which she is about to feed to her alligator Granny Dracula has concocted a special love potion, which will make Buddy fall madly in love with Dirga and propose marriage. The Dracula family hopefully awaits to see if the potion will work. Count and Countess Dracula reminisce the days when they were teen-age sweethearts. They are trying to give their daughter Dirga confidence, for she is trying to catch Buddy for her own. Buddy is completely unaware of the Dracula Family's plot, but he is still frightened by them. Granny and Count Dracula are overjoyed at finding out that Granny's love potion has completely worked and that Buddy is already acting like one of the family. Buddy can hardly wait to marry Dirga and is already making his plans. Fritzie Washburn, the Chaperone of the teen-age group, encourages Eddie to work-out and exercise. Eddie always feels inferior to Fritzie because she can do 400 pushups and he can't. Fritzie is also trying to reassure the other travelers that the Dracula family is not as bad as they think, even though she is not quite sure herself. Barbara is very excited after finding that Buddy has changed and no longer wants to marry' her, but Dirga instead. She is trying to convince him of how silly he is acting, but she seems to do nothing except upset Evelyn and Merry- Countess Dracula has just showed her prized Mummy case to one of the travelers, Merry Bean. Merry' fainted at the horrible sight and Fritzie, Evelyn and Buddy are trying to help her to one of the rooms. They have all had a very exciting day. 97 JUNIOR PtAY Caroline |oe Ma Rand Susie Stanley Howie Bunny Pat Willie Sally Milt Shirley leannette Miss Jameson . . . Johnnie DIRECTOR . . . . Sodas anyone? That is what Jeanna Wong is eating, so she would keep quiet about a certain bet; a group of boys made with Sean Sullivan about her sister Caroline, Linda Johns; she overheard while sitting behind the magazine rack. Happy ending! This is exactly what it is, as Linda Johns forgives Scan Sullivan for making a bet with his friends, to see if he could kiss Linda without her finding out about this bet. The whole cast is gathered together after they have given a flawless performance of the play; You Can't Kiss Caroline. Mr. Stan Howe was presented a gift from the cast for giving his time for directing the play. YOU CAN T KIC CAROLINE John Petersen and Richard Armstrong seem to be much more interested in the new girl, Linda Johns, than they are with the girls they already have. Mary Pisel and Susan Schmcrfeld do not like this idea, so they decide to walk out on their boyfriends. They have a vague idea that they will come running back to them when Joe, Sean Sullivan, starts dating Caroline, Linda Johns. Part of the high school group is gathered together at the Club where they all seem to be talking about the new girl, Caroline, Linda Johns. Pat, Mary Pisel, is also telling Stanley, Richard Armstrong, that he can buy his own hamburger. This group of boys; consisting of Dick Small, Mike Howell, Steve Sorensen, and Sean Sullivan; want to make a bet with Scan Sullivan, to see if he can kiss Caroline, Linda Johns, in a weeks time. The entire chorus entertained the audience with such songs as Ain’t Got Time to Die . There were many individual performers, including Love With The Proper Stranger sung by Peggy McCarty, and Where Have All The Flowers Gone sung by Connie Nelson. Linda Mullens brought a touch of the islands into the show with a Hula Dance. The show was ended with several popular numbers by the Hy-Tones, better known as the Navajo Beatles. Love With The Proper Stranger was sung by Peggy McCarty. The audience enjoyed several popular times by the Hy-Tones. N-A-1. A- UUSIC FESTIVAL - 1966 W.H.S. Mr. Conatser doesn't seem to be very happy as a group of Senior boys push him into the cold water of Oak Creek. He is beginning the long trip down Slide Rock. ontw QAY MAY 23, 1966 Cathy Mack and Randy Neal arc making a daring attempt to slide down Slide Rock. Bill Bollin seems to be enjoying himself as he throws Lynn Kaufman into the cold water at Oak Creek. Coach Nasser joined the senior boys for a swim, even though he preferred not to. Three buses of rather sleepy seniors left Winslow at 6:30 Monday morning for Oak Creek Canyon. Thus began a day of fun for the senior class as they celebrated Ditch Day. The first stop made was at ’Slide Rock.' Everyone enjoyed swimming and the more daring attempted the slide down Slide Rock. Even a few of those who didn't intend to swim-mainly Mr. Conatser and Coach Nasser-found the water refreshing. Next the hungry seniors ate and then they descended upon the skating ring. At the end of the two hour battle on the skating floor, many left limping and covered with scraps and bruises. Once again the buses loaded up for a final swim at ’Slide Rock' before returning to Winslow. 109 Mike Lopez and Kathy DcVancy as they descended down 'Slide Rock.' This was only one of the accomplishments of the 1965 fighting Bulldogs, and it was reached through consistent display of fine team spirit, determination, and effort. Coach Emil Nasser's squad won Division I Class A championship with a perfect league mark of 5 wins and no losses, and wound up the season with an outstanding 8-1-1 slate. The season began with a bitterly fought 14-14 tie with Tolleson on the Wolvcme's home field, with the Bulldogs jumping to a 7-0 lead, then coming from behind a 14-7 deficit late in the game to tie the score. The next week the Bulldogs thrilled their home town fans with a 13-7 win over a big Kingman eleven, and in this one the Winslow boys again came from behind to score a last period touchdown for the victory. A strong, much improved Holbrook team invaded the Bulldog gridiron the next week and again Coach Nasser's charges came through with a thrilling win. Holbrook tied the score at 13-13 in the last period touchdown to bring the final score to 19-13, Winslow. In the Homecoming game, powerful Agua Fria came to Winslow and limped home suffering a stinging 26-19 defeat by the fired-up Bulldogs. This was the most thrilling game of the season, with Winslow scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 14-13 at halftime, after trailing earlier, 13-0. The Superior Panthers hosted the Bulldogs next and were trounced 48-18, and then the Snowflake Lobos went down 28-8 in Winslow. McClintock High of Tempo was the Bulldog's last victim, 13-0 in Tempo. In an inter-division semifinal playoff to determine the finalists for the state Class A championship, the Bulldogs were finally defeated, 33-7, by Division II leader Peoria. Hartman Lomawaima Number 20 Amos Monroe of the Bulldogs gains two points as the Winslow J. V. team pulls ahead for its seasons victories. This year's junior varsity ball club was a hard-scrapping, never-say-die crew which treated the fans to a fast-moving, always exciting brand of basketball. Lady luck was not kind to the Pups, however, as they lost five contests by three points or fewer. One game was lost by three points, two contests by two points, and two more games by only one point. These heart-stoppers could easily have gone either way, and the Pups record would have been more glossy than the 6-9 season record with which they finished. Coach Albert Greer's crew out-scored their opponents during the season by more than 100 points; 885 to 770. One of the highlights of the season was a 76-52 thrashing which the Pups handed arch-rival Holbrook in Winslow, after losing a one-point heartbreaker to the junior Roadrunners in Holbrook. Other victories came against Superior, a southern division power-house, Globe, St. Johns, and St. Josephs twice. Four boys scored over 100 points during the season. They were Larry iMonore, Lorenzo Chavez, John Brown, and Amos Monroe. Two boys who started off with the club developed so well that they were called up to help the varsity shortly before Christmas, and remained there the rest of the season. These boys were David Black, and Mike Ivey. The expert guarding of Bulldog player John Brown seems to have bewildered St. Johns Number 23. Some are remembered vividly, some recalled vaguely, and some completely forgotten. It has been our task this year to compile some of the most memorable faces and experiences from the 1965-1966 school year. When a group of people have worked closely together for nine months to produce a yearbook, it follows that there are many people one must thank. The often forgotten sponsor who does a great deal of work but receives little credit—David E. Conaster. The assistant-editor who has many editorial duties but whose recognition will not come until later—Linda Davis. The photographers who spend many out-of-class hours taking, developing, and printing the pictures which are the backbone of every yearbook—Ray Wong and Daniel Oplinger. The business managers who organize and direct the financial affairs of the yearbook department—Nedra Heath and Julianne Weidinger. The other members of the staff who compile the layouts, pictures, and copy for each page of the yearbook. Many hours have been spent to produce the 1966 yearbook. Only the approval of the students of Winslow High School will decide whether this time has been well spent or wasted. On behalf of the METEOR staff, I express the wish that your yearbook will be of lasting value as you recall the faces of Winslow High School.
