'Mid the smoke and flames, teachers, students, parents, and firemen wept as they all worked together salvaging what they could from the burning high school. After many desperate hours the fire was conquered. It was then that the real work began. Other schools were very sympathetic and offered us anything we could make use of. Our science department used Holbrook's labs once a week, typewriters were loaned to us, and many other educational facilities were made available. With the co-operation of the Junior High, school started the following week. Thus sharing the Junior High we attended school in split shifts until we entered the rebuilt W.H.S. on March 6. Our book begins with that eventful day of the fire showing you pictures of the destruction, the various buildings used for school while W.H.S. was being repaired, the activities and the fun we had during the year, the students and our faculty and administration without whose help and support we never could have had such a good year. We have tried to give you the highlights of this year and show you how Winslow High School’s faculty and students functioned without a school to call their own. The Halls of Ivy” in ruin. At least our hard earned trophies were saved. Knowledge well consumed. Spectators gather with heavy hearts to helplessly watch Winslow's high school burn. Recognize this? This used to be the typing room. ScAooC s4cvau 6 ?%School are rh main occ WOtA. eo«ui Progress and achievement in this complex world of ours is not automatic, but is rather the result of hard work and ability. Our world grows better because some people wish that it should and then take the right steps to make it better. To be of value in the delicate process of living, a person must have a knowledge of life as it is. This person must also be a patient collector of facts, and must understand people well enough to inspire confidence and arouse positive action. We honor such a person today who for many years has given wisdom, understanding, and inspired students to higher achievement. To this person we humbly dedicate our 1961 annual and hope that this token will, in part, pay her for the many happy hours she has given us. 8 'Dedication Left tq right: Dr. Harry Simmons. The setting for the play, Our Town,” by Thornton Wilder, is a small town in New Hampshire named Grovers Corners. In the first act the history of the town is genially outlined by the stage manager. The audience is carried into the homes of Gibbs and Webb families and spends an entire day in the lives of these people. The second act is concerned with the love life between George Gibbs and Emily Webb, and thus culminates in a moving wedding scene. The third act takes place in the cemetery, where many of the townspeople are awaiting not “judgement but greater understanding. Into their midst is led the bride, a little timid at first, a little wishful to go back to life, to live again with her memories. But she is shown how impossible it is to return and that truth is to be found only in the future. 104 Dr. Gibbs, played by Scott Petterson. discusses the news with Howie Newsome, played by Willard Rose.
