METEOR Working quietly behind the scenes of Winslow High School is a teacher worthy of our admiration. With the use of her own skill, she has conscientiously prepared many WHS students fora profitable life in the world of business. So, with deep appreciation and a sincere wish for her happiness as she steps forth on a new road of success, we dedicate our 1954 Meteor to MISS AVIS NAYSMITH. D E D I C A T 3 O N THE HALLS OF IVY Oh, we love the halls of ivy That surround us here today, And we will not forget, tho’ We be far, far away. To the hallow’d halls of ivy Ev’ry voice will bid farewell, And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall, The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall and disappear; But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart A part of ev’ry heart will linger here. In the halls of ivy, Where we’ve lived and learned to know, That thro’ the years we’ll see you In the sweet afterglow. —Russell and Knight 5 ALMA MATER Here mid the skies and the desert's beauty, and mountain ranges blue. Touched by the ever gleaming sunlight, and desert moonlight too. So we pay homage to you our high school, pledging that we'll be true, With voice and hand and heart saluting, here's our toast to you. With a hep, hep, hep we march along, Winslow High to you we're true. With a hep, hep, hep and cheering song, fighting, working, and rooting for you. For your learning we're yearning, Hope high is burning, that's our toast to you. 6 Wt£ m no Ho ha MHeeet-m SCHOOLS A V OUT f A I DON’T IH E LOAFERS TtACHfK PEARL ANDERSON Mathematics Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa University of Omaha University of Colorado WILLIAM C. Now, I was a good boy, not mean or rough, but that darned old Teacher, Man, was she tough!! No fun for us old time kids, she was strict and cross, old and ugly And really the boss . . . She made us write our spelling words on our slate 50 times a day ... And if we didn’t get ’em, we didn’t go out to play. She took our frogs, and pollywogs too. And when we brought snakes, extra homework to do . . . Oh, she was awful. She beat where we sat. Just wait till I got grown and I taught her brat. That’s where I am now, today was the first... I was so proud of my education I thought I would burst. Yep, I’ve got my teacher’s kid right on the first row. He was here big as life pulling Clara Bell’s bow. Now, I could get even for the years long ago . . . and show her how nice I could be for her Little Joe ... The first thing I felt was spitballs galore. And then I looked up, paper planes on the floor ... Just soldiers and cowboys, no pollywogs here ... Just feathers and cap guns and all they hold dear ... Yep, when I was a lad, we sure had it rough. . . Times sure have changed, now teaching is tough. So don't be a teacher .. . I’ll warn you right now . . . Just go to the eighth grade and then Dush a plow. 13 AUTOGRAPHS From left to right: Elizabeth Jones, Shirley Aul-wurm, Gail Smith, Ralph Miller, and Paul McCormick. SENIORS '54 Our freshman year we were so green We trembled in wonder at each new scene. But our teachers were kind, and did not let us sink. They led us to water of knowledge, and some made us drink. The following year, we were not so unsure. The girls got so pretty many boys they did lure. Our dances and parties and picnics were tops; When you’re a sophomore, the fun never stops. When we were juniors and nearly adults We began to realize even upperclassmen have faults. How hard we all worked on our hilarious plays; None of us shall ever forget that glorious day. And then in a twinkling what should appear But eighty-six seniors? At last wc were here! How grand they all were: senior day, ditch day. banquet and hop. We stopped at nothing; we were on top. S Such wonderful years, such fun and strife! We’ll always remember our high school life. So we’ll say farewell, with hearts that are falling; We now are graduates and a new life is calling. CLASS OF '55 We began our Junior year with many activities. In order to make money, we sponsored several successful sock dances after the home games, and had charge of the concession stands during the basketball games. January 23, the Juniors presented their annual assembly with a one act play entitled “Take a Letter.” Also on the program were several skits, songs, and dances representing each season of the year. During the Rumpus, we presented the traditional concessions consisting of the boys’ style show and the night club. We did our part toward the success of the Junior-Freshman dance. “Seventeenth Summer,” our class play, was presented March 19 after many hours of long but entertaining work. The climax of the year was our Junior Prom. The gym was exquisitely decorated with an original theme. The Junior Class can look back on their Junior year as one of complete success and lasting memories. Left to right: Glenn Olmsted. Charles Rapson. Avis Naysmith. Estelee Hinson. The sophomore float was one of the outstanding ones in the homecoming parade. Our concession at the Bulldog Rumpus proved to be a profitable enterprise. In March we presented an amusing assembly, thanks mostly to the hard work of our sponors. April brought the Senior-Sophomore dance and a lot of fun for all who worked on it or attended. Our next big project will be as juniors, and we hope that w'e will be able to maintain the high standards of WHS. Standing: R. Boyle, G. Olmstead, L. Howard. Seated: N. Boyd, S. Bagley, J. Sema, M. When they face their opponents on the gridiron, cheers emit from the WHS fans. These boys have won the respect and admiration of the crowds by their pep, fighting spirit, and stamina. These ardent fans cheer because they know that these boys put their all into the game—fighting to uphold the honor of our Alma Mater. Next year upon becoming a class A school, our team will meet a challenge such as they never have before— that of stronger, harder-playing teams. That is a challenge to be met with the never-failing, never-faltering spirit which Winslow’s Football Team boasts, and, with this spirit in their possession, they will lead us to victory. After the game is over, after the field is clear—help me straighten my nose and shoulder, and help me find my ear. We leave these things for the class of “59” to accomplish and hope they have as much fun doing them as we did. We would like to thank Mr. Gardner who has assisted us in all of our Junior High activities, such as the prize-winning float in the Homecoming Parade and the Junior High Gold Medal Tournament in which the Winslow team took second place. We would like also to thank Miss Kelly, Jr. High Pep Squad sponsor, for her unceasing help. This year, the Pep Squad marched in the Christmas parade and also cheered at many of the games in which the Jr. High team participated. The Junior High donated $171.43 to help buy a microscope for the new hospital and a considerable amount to help pay for the scoreboard for the new football field. In any case, the real measure of success is not fame or fortune; it's freedom. Freedom to think, freedom to speak, and freedom to act. Your biggest responsibility is the protection of those freedoms for yourself and for others. What's ahead depends on your efforts. Fame and fortune have little value without freedom, so we must all be alert to combat any force that attempts to take our freedom from us. EPILOGUE Thumbing through the Meteor pages of past years has brought back memories anew and afresh. Last May, we, the Meteor Staff, prepared to produce another such book of memories. Each page was carefully planned to please you and to help us all to remember our 1953-54 school year. To carry out this goal took many long hours of hard work. However, it was not a task but something very enjoyable and lots of fun. Now that the last of the book is off to press, we can look back on our work with pride, for we are proud! We sincerely hope that you will view our finished product with pride too, and be able to say to the memories recalled, “That was the happiest time of my life.” Then do we know that our goal has been attained. We could not possibly have presented you with this annual had it not been for the help given us. We wish to extend our greatest appreciation to Mr. Reavis, our sponsor, who has untiringly given us his time. If there was ever any problem to be solved, any advice to be given, or a rough spot to be smoothed, he was always there ready to administer the need, taking time off from his duties at home or as principal of WHS. Our deepest thanks also go to the Arizona Yearbook Company for their patience; especially to Mr. Sam DeWitt. We have caused him many a headache during this past year. To Mr. and Mrs. Harry Summers also goes our vote of thanks for your efficient work, picking up the loose ends in the middle of the year and carrying us through to completion. We also wish to express our appreciation to the WHS office staff for their co-operation and understanding, for which we could not have done without, in enabling us to take our pictures, carry on our business, and meet our deadline. I, as editor, would like to thank each and every member of the Annual Staff for willingly doing such wonderful work. We have had a lot of fun together and some trying times, but you were really grant to work with. Let me extend my most sincere appreciation to you. And above all, I wish to thank the members of my class for giving me the opportunity to be editor. I shall be eternally grateful. Shirley Ann West YOUR LIFE'S SECRET STORY No matter what else you are doing, From cradle days through to the end. You’re writing your life’s secret story— Each night sees another page penned. Each month ends a thirty-page chapter, Each year means the end of a part, And never an act is misstated, Nor ever one wish of the heart. Each day when you wake, the book opens, Revealing a page clean and white. What thoughts and what words and what doings Will cover its surface by night? God leaves that to you—you’re the writer, And never one word shall grow dim. Till someday you write the word ‘Finis.” And give back your life book to Him. —Selected BROOUCtO BY ARIZONA YEAR BOOK CO.
