JUNIORS 54 Wc began our year as Juniors feeling excited and ready for a busy year. We were active in school activities and clubs, and during basketball season we had charge of the concession stand, where we sold candy. The annual Junior Assembly was staged January 29, highlighted by The Blue Jeans Girl, a one-act play. Variety acts made up the balance of the program. With utmost co-operation, the Juniors and Freshmen put on a successful Junior-Freshman Dance. Unique ideas were used by the Juniors this year in presenting the style-show and nightclub at the Bulldog Rumpus. Hard work and fun were shared by the Juniors in presenting their outstanding production of Act Your Age. The climax of the year was our Junior Prom. The artistically decorated gym spotlighted the theme in an exotic fashion. We of the Junior Class feel that we can look back on our Junior year as one filled with accomplishments of which we can be justly proud. The Greeks had a word for Sophomores--Sophos meaning wise, and Moros foolish. There is more to the translation than meets the eye. The second year of high school is perhaps the most important one, because it is here we should pause, take stock of ourselves and ask: Where am I going? Am I wise enough to take every advantage my high school years offer? Too many oi us are inclined to take our American Educational System for granted, forgetting entirely the long years of labor and sacrifice on the part of those who established it for us; accept all too lightly the efforts and high ideals of teachers whose lives are spent in furthering our learning and making us better citizens. We Sophomores opened the 1952-53 school year with approximately 107 students. As our predecessors, we strove to make ourselves known and, we hope, remembered well in the activities and events in which we were asked to participate. To our sponsors, those good and patient teachers, who gave unselfishly of their time and energy in bettering our attempts and advising us on proper methods of procedure, we present herewith a well deserved bouquet of orchids. To our class officers who kept our ship of state sailing smoothly, we offer sincere words of praise. Now, as the year draws to a close, we forget momentarily semester exams, and dreamily turn our eyes to another horizon, a horizon that but a few short months ago seemed unattainable and far away--that bright realm looked up to by all under classmates--JUNIORS! BARRY MACK President NINA BOYD Vice-President LYNN HOWARD Secretary RACHEL VILLARINO Treasurer SYLVIA MILLER JENNY PARSONS JIMMIE FERGUS Representatives FRESHMEN After eight long and enjoyable years in elementary and Jr High School, we finally reached the lowest step in the high school ladder. The Class of 56 participated in several high school activities. In November we entered a float in the Homecoming Parade. In February we helped stage the Junior-Freshman Dance, and had two concessions in the Bulldog Rumpus. The Freshman Assembly was in April and an entertaining program was presented. The Frosh basketball team brought home top honors from the Invitational Tournament in Holbrook. We enjoyed being Freshmen and are looking forward to three more happy, successful years in Winslow High School. Our sponsors have been anxious to help us plan our many activities. We are glad they will be there to help us throughout our high school years. Mr. Gibson, Miss Oare, Miss Anderson, Mr. Strack. SPORTS 1 H1V GOOD SPORTS There they are--hundreds of eager sports fans. Screaming with delight at times and groaning at others as the game is played, they are, most of all, good sports. Why? Examine the facts. In the first place they are good sports because they actually came to the game, (takes quite a bit of energy to come to a game). And why did they come? Simply because they like sports, that's why. These eager people thrive on the nervous excitement furnished by sports--the uplifting joy and happiness which erupts into wild cheers of victory and even the tense silences which become low moans of despair when defeat looms up. Rain or shine they come to the games to yell their hearts out for the team. Although physically they are either sitting or jumping up and down in the stands, mentally they are all right out there in the middle of the game, helping to win. And afterwards they talk about it--rejoicing in victory, regretting defeat, congratulating the players and themselves, and sympathizing over injuries. Who are they? Haven't you guessed? They are you--and you--and see way up there near the top? that's me. Although the art of opening lockers, changing classes, enjoying seventh hours, and having P. E. classes were new to us, we mastered all of them. Our concessions in the Rumpus and our J. H. Gold Medal Tourney were great successes. Because of financial difficulties, we did not enter floats in the parades, but this did not prevent us from taking part in the rallies and cheering at the games. Under the supervision of Miss Kelly, the J.H. Pep Squad was reorganized this year. They cheered at many of the games and marched in the Christmas Parade. Next year we will be green freshmen in Winslow Senior High School, but we will never forget our days in Winslow Junior High. JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL EIGHT KELLY FRONT ROW: R. Montoya, N. Now, one May later, we can see how much we have learned in the past year. Never a dull moment and plenty of excitement has accompanied every section of this book. But we're happy--we're finished (literally) and we're proud. Now our final aim will be to see a look of satisfaction on your faces, because we have mounted these pages to please you, and to help us all remember our 1952-53 school year. Unless we had had considerable help, we could never have presented you with this annual. We wish to extend our greatest appreciation to Mr. R. M. Fronske, yopr Meteor photographer, without whose patient and co-operative help we could never have finished our task. Deep thanks also to the Arizona Yearbook Company for their patience, especially to Mr. Sam DeWitt, who many times refrained from calling us what he desired. Although we may not have shown it, we think the Winslow High office force is the best one we could ever wish for. They have made it possible for us to take our pictures, carry on our business, and meet our deadline. The office has truly been our loyal and steadfast friend. We, as the staff, would like to thank our sponsor, Mr. Gibson, for putting up with us and for doing those jobs we weren't capable of doing ourselves. I, as editor, would like to thank the Annual Staff for putting up with my ranting and raving and for spending such long hours working on this project. If the task had to be done over again, I would like the same crew to depend on. But just one word of special thanks fcrr those who did more than their share of the work. And thank you, members of my class, for giving me the opportunity to be editor--I shall be eternally grateful.
