ZL Weteo,. 1952 WINSLOW HIGH SCHOOL Winslow, Arizona Dedication VJ. VJ. We, the class of ’52 affectionately dedicate our annual to W. W. Armstrong, who, by his sensible reasoning and fine example carefully molded our characters. From our seventh year any problem, laugh, or gyipe could be shared with Wimpy.” (A name we didn’t call him to his face — only affectionately behind his back.) And any visit to his office would leave us with a glow of appreciation for a wonderful principal. His ready smile and sympathetic understanding endeared him to each and every one of our class. His profound influence along the pathway of knowledge will remain with us all our lives. rmstron 9 Page 2 5 a asses Sacuft Sports y Or aniza tions SlctiuitieS ji . . . 60 . 81 . 101 117 . 129 A'V Officers Dcwayne Wheeler President Eldrcna Farr Vice-President Mina Nichols Secretary Beryl Burt Treasurer Student Council Wanda Higbcc Dorothy Strombcrg Walter Cox Shedding a tear or two, | crha|)s. we. the Seniors, hid WHS farewell. Since we were important upper classmen, no one but the Seniors could push us around—but who were they? We immediately began making plans to make out selves the most outstanding class in school and in our estimation we carried out our ideas. We carried the burden of the Junior-Freshmen dance, topped the Seniors in our concessions at the bulldog Rumpus, placed live members in the Honor Society, ; ml put ourselves up front by being the only class to enter a float in the Annual City Christmas Parade. Although we didn’t win a prize, main people agreed it was a work of art. Because of the many hours devoted to out studies during the first semester, our mid-year exams were no trouble. A fitting conclusion to our year was our production of Clementine,” our minstrel class assembly, and thanks to the hard working prom committee we put on a beautiful Prom. As we look forward to our next year, we resolve to make it the best and most successful in our high school career. KARBARA ACRE The Songbird o II'. . V. The Sophomore girls made up the majority of those who participated in the Pep Squad initiation, which consisted of all the humiliating things that always happen to Rats. , „ _ When the Elks Quarterback Club sponsored the annual Football Banquet, our class out did all previous Sophomores by lettering eleven men. After suffering through semester tests, the year rushed on with the pace of basketball. Flagstaff was the scene of both the Northern and State Tournaments and many Sophomores were spectators to both oi these. With the aid of the Seniors, our Senior-Sophomore Dance was an affair to be proud of, as was our class assembly. ASC at f lagstaff was the scene of the NAIA Music Festival and many of the participants were from the class of ’51. May saw the close of school with its tests, assemblies and spring fever. With the anticipation for better things to come, we look back over our year of Sophomores as one well spent, and look forward to our Junior year as the most thrilling yet. Our candidates for the Bulldog Rumpus King and Queen were Johnny Campbell and Joyce Parker. And our choice for “Miss Merry Christmas” was Jackie Gunn. Gene Piscl Guard Dale Hancock Center Dudley Mack Quarterback I . ROUND VALLEY After their loss to Flagstaff the Bulldogs came roaring back to win over Round Valley as they rolled up yardage and first downs against the Elks. Winslow gave RV no mercy in rolling up their highest score in one single game of the season. KINGMAN Against a highly touted King-man eleven, WHS continued its winning ways. Winslow led throughout the game until King-man pushed over a last minute TD due to numerous penalties called against Winslow. Fred Padilla Walter Robinson Charles Irwin Halfback Guard Tackle MINGUS There were high hopes for Winslow as they journeyed to Clarksdale to engage with the newly formed Mingus high school. But the Bulldogs were not able to penetrate the Mingus defense while the Rams scored twice in the second half to win the ball game. SNOWFLAKE Inspired by its first hometown crowd, the Bulldogs downed Snowflake to bounce back into the win column. The Lobos scored three TD's, but Winslow tallied one more in a contest highlighted by long gains. George Bates Center Cooper Cooat a Halfback Bill Watson Fullback Dewaync Wheeler Guard Robert Clark Tackle PRESCOTT Winslow lost to a big and burly Prescott team, although it was generally rated the Bulldog’s best played game of the season. It looked as if WHS was to suffer another terrific beating, but when the dust had settled Winslow had more than held their own against the Class A Badgers. ST. JOHNS Probably the most disappointing of defeats was suffered by Winslow rooters when the St. Johns Redskins scalped Winslow at Winslow. Donald Wetzel End Johnny Russell End Sidney Travis Quarterback Kenneth Ahmic Center Billy Chamcma Halfback HOMECOMING Homecoming festivities were in lull swing the night before and the next day, but Flagstaff whipped our beloved BtrHdogs 14-6. WHS nevertheless gained a moral victory in their loss against the Eagles. FLAGSTAFF The Winslow squad showed its real worth in its second tilt with Flagstaff. Battling the Eagles to a near standstill, Winslow still came out on the short end of the score. Robert Zismann Tackle John NcNelly Tack If Roy Madrid Guard George Gonzales Tackle Lonnie Foster Quarterback GALLUP Winslow climaxed its mediocre season with a win over Callup high school. The Bulldogs looked sharp, to the chagrin of Coach Nasser as it was the last game of the season, but better late than never. GENE PISEL Elected as a co-captain of the 1951 football squad, Gene Pisel was stand-out performer for the Bulldogs. Jovial Gene held down the left guard position and he played inspired ball in the Flagstaff and Prescott games and along with his dependable playing throughout tne season has proven that he was worthy of this position. Franklin Carillo Bill Mciklc Lyle Jenkins Halfback Guard Quarterback NELSON GOLDSBERRY Along with Gene Pisel, Nelson Goldsberry was chosen as the other co-captain. Nelson suffered a serious neck injury as the season got underway, but Spike” was still chosen because of his stellar performance on the gridiron. Ray Gutierrez End Keith Crawley Halfback Harvey Tewanema Halfback Page 66 r Bill Gonzales Halfback « Paul McCormick Halfback Bill Tecklenburg Tackle Emil G. Nasser, head WHS football coach, has compiled a fine record since coining from ASG at Flagstaff six years ago. Although this season has been his worst due to numerous setbacks, Winslow High is fortunate to have secured such a capable coach. Earl Benham, coaching his first year at WHS, has proved a worthy advisor to Mr. Nasser as assistant football coach. The writing, make-up, and printing of the newspaper were new to all staff members in September, but soon they learned enough of these practical phases of newspaper work to publish a four page edition. By second semester, feeling very sure of themselves, they enlarged the paper to six pages. The informality of this class, the poise-building experiences in interviewing people, and the know-how behind writing stories on the spur of the moment have prepared these students for a fair beginning in the Journalistic field. The most important Council undertaking this year was the laying of tiie foundation of the Teen Center. A $2,000 allotment from the Community Chest plus a $500 contribution from the student body made this beginning more of a reality. The committee has hopes that the Center will be completed by next fall. Jobber Phone 642 and 644 Winslow, Arizona PATRONIZE YOUR ADVERTISERS FOR THEY MAKE YOUR ANNUAL POSSIBLE Editorially Speaking The job of producing your 1952 Meteor has, it goes without saying, involved a fantastic amount of work mingled with hair-tearing, worry, grief, and loads of fun. Now it is in order to give thanks to those people who have carried their share, and in some cases, more than that. Undying gratitude goes to all those who were not even on the staff, but who worked so hard to meet our deadlines. Many thanks go to our sponsors, Lee Coover and Jerry Neumann, who not only advised us, but also who pitched in and helped on all the odd jobs. Especial thanks go to our one and only photographer, Skippy Cox, who did the work of three. I o our advertising managers, who spent many hours selling ads, thanks. And to all the other hard working staff members who planned, cut, pasted and typed for long hours with no compensation except the hope of seeing a worthwhile Meteor, out on time, my debt of gratitude cannot be measured. But first, last and foremost — for those without whom this Meteor could not be published — thank God for our Advertisers!
