Even being stricken by polio early in the fall and having to remain in an iron lung for long periods of time can’t break Betty’s cheerful spirit nor fade her sunny smile. Her gallant fight to recover has made her loved and respected by all. Page Three Page Four Page Five MR. R. E. BOOTH Superintendent of Winslow Schools MRS. BONNIE BRENNAN President MR. K. G. (1Zan of JQf)Q We. the Seniors of 19S0, look back on our high school years with memories that will be cherished throughout our lives. It doesn’t seem so long ago that we entered high school as green” Freshmen. As Freshmen, we faithfully built the traditional “W before each rally, gave our first assembly, sponsored the Junior-Freshmen Dance with the Juniors, and won first place in the Bulldog Rumpus Parade. The next year, as Sophomores, we felt more important giving our second assembly. We helped sponsor the Senior-Sophomore Dance, and participated in the Bulldog Rumpus. Again our assembly was a success. As Juniors, we became upper-classmen. We were proud of our class, and now felt that we were a more important part in the school. Our play, We Shook the Family Tree, was a huge success. With the Freshmen, we gave the Junior-Freshmen Dance. Our assembly was one of the best presented that year. In April, we gave our Junior Prom. Our theme was Moonlight and Roses.” and we received many compliments. In the fall of 3949. we returned as the mighty Seniors. We presented the Senior-Faculty Picnic, and our Senior assembly. In November, we presented the Senior play, “A Date With Judy.” In the spring, our activities will include: The Senior-Sophomore Dance, Senior Ditch Day, Kid Day, the Senior Hop, Class Day, and graduation. Now wc are leaving Winslow High School, but we will never forget the joy and happiness we have had together. May you, the future graduates, know this joy and happiness as we have. During this time, we have learned what it means to be a part of high school life, and to participate in the activities required by such a position. While seventh graders, we tried to make ourselves as inconspicuous as possible as we learned “the ropes.” As high and mighty eighth graders, our ambitions were quickened by the thought of high school life just beyond. In May, 1948, we took the spot-light with our induction into W.H.S. Freshmen at last, and while being considered “green” by the upper-classmen, we built the traditional “W’s” for the rallies. Moreover, we joined the Juniors in staging the Junior-Freshmen Dance. Now, as Sophomores, we have been in the middle of things: athletics, Bulldog Rumpus, school clubs, chorus, and the annual Senior-Sophomore Dance. We are looking forward to our Junior year and its outstanding event, the Prom, to our Senior year which will not be finis, but only the end of Volume One of our lives and education. That year our greatest accomplishment was learning how to open lockers. The next year we became superior eighth graders. We were then head class of the junior high and could push the little seventh graders around. We had an active class that year and put more money in the junior high treasury than any class had for five years. We were inducted into the high school on May 27, 1949, with high hopes and big ideas. We were taken down a notch the following September when we started school as “green” freshmen. We built the “W’s” for all the football rallies and were lucky enough to have them burn. We put on our freshmen assembly and took part in the Junior-Freshmen Dance. Like most things sponsored by the class of “53” they were huge successes. Now our first year in Winslow High School is over and we are looking forward to our next three years. We know we are going to have fun even if our gay days as freshmen can’t be lived over. irty-nine COMPLIMENTS OF DR. HARRY SIMMONS. DR. C. H. PETERSON. CHESTER SHARAR. EDNA COMBS. MAID-RITE PLAYHOUSE. Winslow defeated six opponents, losing only to the strong Class A Albuquerque Bulldogs in a non-conference tilt. The season was started by defeating Cathedral High of Gallup 27-13 in a nonconference game. Round Valley was the next victim which fell in a hard fought game 13-7. Winslow then invaded Kingman, returning with a 28-0 victory. A superior team from Albuquerque then gave Winslow their only defeat of the season. Next on the Bulldogs’ list was Holbrook who was beaten 19-0. Snowflake scoring in the first few plays of the game looked like a hard opponent but the Bulldogs came through with a 39-7 victory. Billy Noel and Lois Zahnley as football king and queen expressed their appreciation to the boys for the honor given them. The table decorations were done by enterprising Pep Squad girls who put up tiny goal posts at the ends of the tables and placed at intervals ribbon yard lines giving the effect of football fields. The place cards consisted of small football shoes, jerseys, with each boys number on it, and football helmets. On the table was the gold football trophy. WINSLOW HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council has been very active during the current school year, sponsoring several dances after football games in the fall, making all arrangements for the home-coming game parade and dance, and also handling all details in connection with the Bulldog Rumpus. This year, the Council also sold small Bulldog pins and WHS pennants in the High School. The Council has endeavored to promote better relationships between the Winslow High School and the other high schools by appointing a welcoming committee for each interscholastic event. This committee welcomes the visiting contestants and endeavors to see that they are supplied with anything needed for their comfort and convenience while visiting our school. Five delegates attended the State Convention of Student Body Officers including Boyd Lee, president; John Paul, Darrel Bashor, Jane Prochnow, and Dorothy Nichols. Since that time 55 Winslow high school students have become members of the National organization. On December 13. 1949. the following members were inducted at the annual induction assembly: K. Woods. A. Greer. N. Ma:tin, P. Grove. I). Nichols. J. A. Lancaster. B. Peterson. B. Willis. K. Ricks, and C. Swann. Reverend Dwight Burkham was the speaker. The group is proud of this year’s achievements. Early in the school year, having received money by the selling of school pennants, the society sent a gift of $20 to Betty Tillman, a member of the Senior class, who had been striken with polio. The 3rd place award to the best float in the Homecoming parade was awarded to the society. As an added service to the school, a festive spirit was created during the Christmas holiday season. The members surprised the faculty and student body by placing gay Christmas wreaths, which they had made, throughout the building during the week before the Christmas vacation. A tree was also placed in the main entrance for all to enjoy. In an endeavor to perform some service to the community, the society volunteered to conduct the March of Dimes campaign in the entire public school system. This was done, and the second largest contribution of any group in Winslow was collected. To qualify for membership, it is necessary to have at least ten points which are awarded to students as they qualify in dramatic work. The Society’s primary aim is to make students intelligent observers of dramatic arts. This year, Thespians gave the Christmas assembly. It included the one-act play, “Christmas Gift”, a reading by Jerry Spears, and several other numbers. In the spring, students who participated in the Senior play, “A Date With Judy”, and in the Junior play, “Just Ducky”, will be initiated. The paper covers all the events concerning school and its purpose is to develop the writing talent hidden among student groups. Many themes of different classes have been published in the school paper. With Helen Woo as editor and Miss Estelee Hinson as supervisor, many improvements have been made on the paper. The rest of the class supports them by getting in assignments and carrying out their duties in general. On November 12, 1949, Helen Woo, Joanne Lancaster, Nancy Stout, and Miss Hinson attended a Journalism Convention at Tempe. They learned several new ideas about publishing a school paper and reported that their visit was an enjoyable one. We think that the Journalism Class is to be congratulated on their immediate and complete converage of events at WHS. Page Eighty-eight DANCING DITCH DAY (2. Page Eighty-nine The good-looking: couple above, Lee Eastman and Clydine Rhoton, reigned over the annual Bulldog Rumpus held in the high school. This year’s games of chance were not held by the respective classes, but there were concessions and entertainment throughout the building. Some of the side shows were the Western night-club sponsored by the Seniors, the Spanish songs and dances by the Spanish Club, movies, fish pond, hot dog stand, and many others. The main event was the floor show. At this time, the coronation of the king and queen was held. We were honored with the hoop dance by Anthony Purley and Montoya. Joane Lancaster and Tony Sanchez, respectively, sang “Its a Big Wide Wonderful World” and “Through A Long and Sleepless Night.” The Spanish Club sang several numbers and Girl Scout Troop No. 6 did the Dance of the Cheyennes. Two performances of the play were presented. One Thursday afternoon, November 17, and the last one Friday night, November 18. Both were huge successes with the hilarity of the lines rocking the auditorium with laughter. All of the cast and stage crew stated that they had loads of fun learning and practicing for the final presentation. Mrs. Frances O’Sullivan was director and supervisor of the production. There was a play party in the Home Economics room after the Friday night performance. The kids danced and ate to their hearts content. The food was supplied by the cast and the crew. 5 ZYILOX Page Ninety-one junior igqg” We, as Juniors in 1949, were proud to present as our Junior play “We Shook the Family Tree.” One of the most popular plays for high school production. This comedy was filled to the brim with laughs provided by the leading lady, Jerri Hitchcock, and the leading man, Herbert Keller, two very well qualified dramatists. The play was directed by Mrs. Jane Cantrell, who was strict about the cast learning lines but always ready to join in when fun appeared. This year the cast and crew had their play party at the Guild Hall in the Episcopal Church. Everyone brought a date and food. They danced and just had a good time in general. The most spectacular event of the evening was a jitterbug exhibition by Miss Cartlidge, now Mrs. Crawford, and Dick Bates.
