It is now under the sponsorship of Mr. Armstrong, our High School Principal. Each spring, the five top officers are elected by the student body. The remaining seventeen members of this year’s council represent their respective classes and organizations. There are three representatives from each class and one from each club. The council sent two delegates to the annual Student Council Convention held in Nogales this year. The Student Council has also sponsored several dances and the Bulldog Rumpus. The work of the council consists in taking care of all business of interest to the entire student body. We. the Seniors of 1948 are looking back on the past four years well spent in Winslow High School. It would be impossible to remember all of the good times we had together but we can list a few of the outstanding ones. Our Freshman year we spent in getting accustomed to our new surroundings, building the “W” and being pushed around by upperclassmen. We sponsored an assembly and the Freshman-Junior Dance with the help of the Juniors. The next year we participated in the Bulldog Rumpus, sponsored the Senior-Sophomore Dance with the aid of the Seniors, and presented an assembly. When we became Juniors we felt that we had become famous and a necessity to Winslow High. The Class of 48 . under the direction of Miss Hinson, presented a comedy. Almost Summer. With the assistance of the Freshmen, we sponsored the Junior-Freshman Dance. Our greatest achievement that year, however, was the Junior Prom. The theme, Star Dust, was one that will linger long in the memories of W.H.S. In the Fall of 1947. we once more returned to the halls of Winslow High to become the mighty Seniors. This year we have presented the Senior-Faculty Picnic, a Christmas Assembly and a Senior-Sophomore Dance. In November we presented the Senior Play. Marry Before Midnight ’ under the direction of Mr. Rezabek. In the Spring, our activities included: Senior Ditch Day. Kid Day. the Class Day and last but not least, the Senior Hop. Now we have completed our high school life. When we leave Winslow High School, we believe that our work in this school will stand as a challenge and a goal for classes yet to come. Our class will part and seek their fortunes in many parts of this world, but we can never forget the experiences we enjoyed together during the past four years. The next year we re-organized the Junior High Council after a year of inactivity. We succeeded in putting on a Junior High Dance that year and brought in more money during the Bulldog Rumpus than any other class. On May 25, 1945, we received our diplomas and became full-fledged Freshmen. We passed through our Freshman and Sophomore years in the usual way, with a number of successes and a few failures. This year we came back as upper-classmen. With the help of the Freshman Class we put on the annual Junior-Freshman Dance. We gave our assembly on February 6. which consisted of a pantomine, a debate, a reading, a piano selection, and last but not least, a beautiful ballet by eight of our most graceful boys. We put on the Junior Play, The Harvest Queen, which was a huge success. We sponsored the Junior Prom and were repaid for our hard work in preparation by our beautiful decorations and the wonderful time had by all. For the Rumpus we sponsored Bingo, the White Elephant auction, a cake raffle, and a re-engagement of the Ballerinas. Our boys have been active in sports throughout the year. After three years in High School we are looking forward to returning to our Senior year. That year was full of many new things, such as locker combinations and Upper-Classmen rule. The next year we became the high and mighty eighth graders. At least we could feel superior to someone! We also took part in the Bulldog Rumpus that year. We entered a float in the parade for the first time in our high school career and won first prize with it. Finally in September, 1946, we became green Freshmen and for the first time actually took part in many high school activities. We helped sponsor the Junior-Freshman Dance, put on an assembly for the high school, and, of course, took part in the Bulldog Rumpus. Again we took first prize in the parade. In our Sophomore year we began to feel the responsibilities of high school activities even more. Our Sophomore Assembly was a huge success, as was our Senior-Sophomore Dance. We also helped, this year, in making the Bulldog Rumpus successful. We felt very proud when our float in the parade won first prize for the third consecutive time. We are looking forward with great anticipation to our next two years in Winslow High School. We had two successful years in Junior High. We helped with the Bulldog Rumpus and won second prize for our floats in both the seventh and eighth grades. On May 23, we graduated from Junior High. On September 2, 1947. we started to school as Freshmen. We built the “W’s” for the football rallies, all of which, luckily, burned. In football we had several Freshmen on the “B” Squad and one Freshman on the““A” Squad. We are very proud of them. On January 23, we helped with the Junior-Freshman Dance, which was a big success. In the Bulldog Rumpus Parade, we won second prize for our Winter Scene Float. During the Rumpus we had a food concession, sold balloons, and had a cake raffle. We had the Freshman Assembly on March 17, and we thought it was very good. After finishing our first year in Winslow High, we are looking forward to our next three years. The Bulldogs tied for second place in the Northern Arizona Conference. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start by just edging past the first game of the season. But after the Bulldogs got rolling they were plenty hard to stop, winning five in succession. The Bulldogs climax came when they met the famed Jerome team and defeated them to the tune of 12-6. Out of eight games Winslow lost only one in a hard fought game to Prescott, 13-0. The only other mar on the Bulldogs record was the game with Flagstaff to determine second place. On a snappy Armistice Day the Bulldogs and Eagles fought to a standstill, a 14-14 tie. The Bulldogs Coach this year was Emil Nasser, who had just graduated from Flagstaff. His first year of coaching at Winslow High School was considered a great success. Pa(fo. He drove his team every minute of practice, and hard work finally produced results. Next year he faces a tough schedule with many veterans missing, but with the same type of coaching. NVinslow should have another successful year. Page Fifty-two NICE BLOCKING! It was a Christmas program consisting of choral numbers, solos, and small group ensembles. The principal accompanists during the year were Jean Stilwell. Donna Scott, and Jane Prochnow. At the end of the year, music letters are awarded on the basis of a point system. In order to earn a letter, you must have three-fifths as many points as the highest number of points by any one person. Throughout the year, many clubs of Winslow were entertained by various members of the Glee Club. In January, a small group entertained the veterans at Fort Whipple, Arizona. In March, a style show was presented by the merchants of the town and the Glee Club furnished a portion of the music. In April, the merchants also supported a talent show in which members of the Glee Club also participated. The proceeds of this were to buy Christmas lights for the city next fall. In the Spring, a larger selected group represented Winslow High School at the Northern Arizona Music Festival with choral numbers, vocal solos, and vocal ensembles. They were selected to participate in several scholastic debate meets with Kingman, Holbrook, and Snowflake. Several one act plays were directed and presented by the members of the class in dramatic study. The plays were presented on the same evenings as school debates. Another department of speech which offered opportunity for student participation was the annual ARIZONA REPUBLIC and AMERICAN LEGION oratorical contest. Eighteen members of the speech class engaged in the local school contest. The winner represented Winslow in the District Contest. The play dealt with the adventures of a girl who went to a haunted hunting lodge to be married so that her aunt and uncle wouldn’t be able to stop the marriage. She must marry before midnight of the twenty-first or she won’t receive her father's fortune. She plans to marry her uncle’s chauffeur and immediately divorce him just so she will receive the money and then she can continue her musical carer. The ceremony is interrupted many times by the arrivals of the girl’s aunt, uncle, and fiance. Her fiance is her cousin and she doesn't want to marry him because he won’t divorce her. Stewart, the fiance, plans to frighten his father to death and also prevent the marriage with the aid of two crooks who pretend they are ghosts. He will thus get his father’s and his cousin’s fortunes. The crooks are finally detected, Stewart is exposed, the girl finds she really loves the chauffeur, who is really a detective, and they are finally married.
