Zimmerman ☆ High School Principal ....................................... 1939-1942 Superintendent of Schools.................................... 1939-1946 ☆ Under the direction of Superintendent J. E. Zimmerman, and aided by a cooperative Board of Education, Winslow High School has been able to maintain its usual high standards in spite of wartime difficulties. During his administration, the school has kept step with the best of modern educational trends. The public has found Mr. Zimmerman to be both business-like and cordial. He has a deep and sincere concern for the youth of Winslow. They, in turn, have a genuine respect for his advice and counsel. His ideals and philosophy have been widespread throughout the community on the many occasions when he has occupied the platform at many public occasions. The churches of Winslow are indebted to him for many fine addresses delivered from their pulpits. Through his personal influence and administrative ability, Mr. Zimmerman has made Winslow High School an institution in which the community takes pride. SENIORS As the graduating class of 1946. we Seniors look back upon our last four years in Winslow High School with fond memories. A review of all our activities would be impossible, but we can touch upon a few of the high points in our high school life. During our Freshman year, we were subjected to the initiation of the upperclassmen. We faithfully carried out our obligation of constructing the “W“ for the football rallies. Also, along with the Juniors, we presented the traditional Junior-Freshman dance. As Sophomores, we added to our prestige by helping to present the Senior Sophomore •lance. In that same year, the Bulldog Rumpus was revived. We took second place honors on our float and placed first in the interclass basketball tournament and second in the interclass track meet. By the time we had become Juniors, our fame and prestige had become widely known. Our Junior play. June Mad. was a roaring success, bringing down the house in every act. c- along with the Freshmen, presented the annual Junior-Freshman dance and won the interclass track meet. For the second straight year, we made more money than any other class in the Bulldog Rumpus. Our crowning achievement in our Junior year was our presentation of the Junior Prom. Heavily decorated in a patriotic theme, the Prom was declared the best ever held in Winslow High School. At last, after eleven long years of study, we became the mighty Seniors, undisputed rulers of Winslow High. With the aid of the Sophomores, we put on the Senior-Sophomore dance. In November we presented the Senior Play. “The (loose Hangs High.” Our last formal presentation to the High School was the Senior Hop. proclaimed one of the finest ever held. Now as we take our leave of our Alma Mater, we wish to bequeath to its future graduating classes the joy and happiness we have had throughout our high school life. We're the same bunch that started three years ago as freshmen but today you might say, 'We've lived and learned. Weve lived through three years of trying education and three joyous years of fun and frolic. We've learned, oh, a little math, English, history and also that cooperation and enthusiasm is what makes the world go 'round.' Our class has the brains and some brawn. Our Junior Play Easy Money ' was a big hit and the prom, an event to be long remembered. We are all looking forward to our Senior year when we will truly be the Class of '47. We believe in ourselves and in our class and we're sure ours will be remembered as one which did things and in such a way as to be admired and envied. Page Twenty HELEN ALLEN Glee Club 3. We first entered in Junior High as seventh graders, where we were looked down on by the upper classmen. We went on into eighth grade, where we felt very proud of ourselves. We kept looking forward to graduation and our first year in High School. As Freshmen, we had a swell time. All Freshmen were called Green and we were really green! One job we had was making the W for the football rallies. They always burned or else we poor Freshmen did the burning! Now we have climbed another step in our education. We are the Sophomores. We participated in the Bulldog Rumpus and made a float for the parade, and we won 3rd prize. We also had a Western Union and a Nite Club which were enjoyed by all. As we climb two more steps toward our goal we hope to make this a better High School by our presence. We had two successful years in Junior High. In the seventh grade we were pushed around a lot but nevertheless we did our part. We helped in the Bulldog Rumpus and in other school activities. The next year we were the high and mighty eighth graders. This year we reorganized the Junior High Council after it had been inactive for a year. The council succeeded in putting on a Junior High Dance. Again that year we helped in the Bulldog Rumpus and we brought in more money than any other class. On May 25, 1945, we received our diplomas and we are now Freshmen. • The next fall we started school as Freshmen, a bit uncertain and very unsure of ourselves. As others had done, we also built the W. We were very worried whether it would burn or not, but luckily they all did. We put on the Freshman Assembly on October 3rd. It consisted of two skits, Who Said Study Hall? and May I Have This Dance? For the Bulldog Rumpus this year we had Bingo, a White Elephant Auction and a Kangaroo Court. In December, with the able assistance of the Juniors, we put on the Junior-Freshman Dance. The Freshmen boys have been active in both football and basketball. In basketball, several Freshmen were on the ”B squad and played in the B” squad games. After having completed our first year in our High School career, we are looking forward to our next three years in Winslow High School. Junior High Student Council The Juunior High School takes pride in participating in many of the activities of the school. This year the eighth grade won first place in the Bulldog Rumpus Parade while the seventh grade took second place. Some of the outstanding shows and concessions of the Bulldog Rumpus were those sponsored by the Junior High. During the school year each home room presents an assembly program before the entire Junior High School. The Junior High School Council officers elected for this year were: President, Albert Greer; Vice-president Jerry Spears; Secretary, Helen Woo; Treasurer, Nancy Stout; Editor, Lois Zahnley; Representative, Florence Mast; Boys Athletic Manager, Dickie Bates; Cheer Leader, Norman Jennings. Each home room also elected a boy and a girl representative to the Junior High Council. Mr. Gardner is sponsor of the Junior High Council. Page Thirty-Eight tri First Hour D. Nichols. I). Jackson. L. Superintendent J. E. Zimmerman made arrangements, under the direction of the Board of Education, to borrow money from the Santa Fe Railway Company to finance alteration and repair of the condemned building, abandoned since 1929. Through the cooperation of the Santa Fe and the Board of Education, the building was put in shape for the sum of $40,000, considerably less than the cost of a comparable new building. A machine shop equipped with $40,000 worth of machinery was obtained through War Emergency Training funds. Mr. Strack conducts classes of three hour periods for high school boys in the new shop. Mr. James P. Lovett is head teacher and teaches a 6th grade section. Other six grades are taught by Mrs. Florence Dingle and Mrs. Rosie Johns. A seventh grade section is taught by Miss Edith Eckert. Coach W. W. Armstrong is in charge of boys' physical education. P.ige Forty-Three HEY! HEY! At tlie time it was organized, the requirements were that members must lie two-year lettermen in any sport or seniors with one letter. I he purpose of the “VV” Club was to install in the minds of students and lettermen a desire for clean athletics and good sportsmanship. Though the Club has been inactive at times, it has been kept alive by a small group. In the past two years it has come back to life and has now laid plans for the Annuel Spring Formal and other activities. With the graduation of the Class of ' 6. the club membership dwindled down to 6 members, but now it has a total of 25 members. The first officers of the Club were: President—David Parker; V. President—Ralph Wickham Secretary—Iouis C.iragi; Treasurer—George Stevens The present officers of the Club are now: President -Wilfred Toya; V. President—Orville Brown Representative—Anthony Purley. Page Forty-Nine Membership in the National Thespians is a privilege and an honor. To qualify for membership to Thespians, it is necessary to have at least ten points in dramatic work. These points are awarded to students as they qualify in roles of the Junior and Senior plays. Business and stage managers are also given due credit for their work in the production of these plays. The National Thespians Dramatic Society for High Schools was founded early in the spring of 1929 at Fairmont State Teachers College at Fairmont, West Virginia. The society for students at Winslow was organized by Mrs. Curry, former teacher of dramatics, in 19J7. The Thespians have produced many plays, the latest being Death Takes a Holiday.” They also presented the school with a master switch which controls all the lighting of the auditorium. Working day and night, this group has carefully pieced together the memories of school days which would other wise be lost. Cutting and pasting pictures, writing unending copy, checking and rechecking. to avoid all possible error, hoping that this year’s book would be the best ever produced in Winslow High School, all this has finally ended and now the product is “finished.” The editor. Lynn Rhodes, was faced with the double load of either writing copy for his assistants or urging them to meet the deadline drawing evei nearer. However, his enthusiasm spurred on the staff to work with speed and accuracy, and to produce a hook of which all might he proud. In their labors, the staff had the help of the new Annual Sponsor. Football The Winslow Bulldogs, coached by W. W. Armstrong, had a successful season, being defeated only by Prescott. They finished the season tied with Kingman for the second place in the Northern Arizona Conference. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, but finished the season by defeating the Flagstaff Eagles 26-7 in the final game. The most outstanding game of the year was that played with the Prescott Badgers. The Bulldogs held the highly favored Badgers to a 7- 7 tie at half time. The weight of the Badgers told in the final half with Prescott winning 14-7. Another fine game played by the Bulldogs was that with the Gallup Tigers. Gallup had beaten Winslow for the last two years, but this year the Bulldogs defeated Gallup 19-7. In 1944 he had another very successful season which ended with Winslow in a tie with the Prescott Badgers for top honors. In 194 ) his team tied Kingman for second place in the Northern Arizona Conference. The outstanding success of his many teams is due to his fine coaching methods. Coach Ann-strong was the first coach to use the “single wing in Winslow. By means of this powerful formation, the Bulldogs have risen to an out standing position in Northern Arizona. Coach Armstrong is very well liked by all athletes who have ever played under him. Winslow will turn out fine teams as long as Coach Arm strong has charge. Charles Nesting began his career in football in 194$. the year in which Winslow won the undisputed championship of Northern Arizona. In 1944 Charles graduated to first string center where he began to deal out punishment on a wholesale basis. He was selected on the All Nor them first team and Honorable Mention All State. In 1945. Charles’ senior year he was elect; ed captain. He was again selected first team All Northern and third team All State.
