Anger Superintendent To the Class of 1985: I congratulate you on the completion of your high school work. As you finish high school years, let me express to you our sincere ap- preciation for the excellent record you have made at Winooski High School. Your record of achievement assures me that the future will bring you much happiness and success. May each of you have the best personal success in every undertaking. SCHOOL BOARD — Patrick Tipson, Marguerite Pearson, Charles Hazen (chairman), Jeanette Valliere (clerk), Bernard Bingel. 58 Mr. Bernard Cieplicki Principal Dear Seniors: There is literally no end to the advice which you will receive on the occasion of your high school graduation. What is more important, however, is your conscious awareness of the rich and abundant heritage contained in your high school education and the stable, yet dynamic future you can look forward to because of it. Through your years at Winooski High School you have been exposed to an education designed to position you securely, though not rigidly, between thoughts and things. You have been taught to seek permanence while living tolerantly with change. You have been led to understand the nature of humanity without losing your individuality. You have been encouraged to pursue perfection with a patient and undiscouraged awareness of your imperfection. Your education at Winooski High School, in a word, has been a prominent part of the most dramatic change you will ever experience. You are different because of Winooski. Your mind has been stretched by new ideas, your personality developed by new experiences, your spirit enlarged by a new consciousness of yourself and others. Your heritage is truth, beauty and goodness. Your resources are faith, hope and love. You stand on the threshold of your future excited and eager. We stand, who were part of your life at Winooski, confident and anticipating. Neither will be disappointed. BAND FALL ACTIVITIES Roger Greenough Although still in a rebuilding stage, the Winooski football team of 1984 gave a performance worthy of the label “Spar- tans.” With hard work, sacrifice, and dedication, the team posted a proud 5-3 record with the highlight of the year being the victory over Rice High School in the final minutes of the game. Throughout the year many personal goals were met; and supported by the quality leadership of the coaches and the captains, the team goals were accomplished. Those goals being: staying together, playing as a team and heading in the same direction: the elements of winners. For those players in their final high school football season, it was one that will be looked upon with pride and memories. For those players next season, it will be the one to show their pride in making memories. VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY The 1984 Field Hockey Team were very dedicated girls who never stopped. Even though they were a young squad (3 seniors, 4 juniors, 9 sophomores) that never stopped the girls. They always went into games with a positive attitude, carried on the Spartan Spirit, and kept trying. It was an enjoyable season, and the members were all winners in many more ways than the final record will ever show. Though this was going to be the last year for field hockey, the girls’ enthusiasm toward field hockey enabled them to have the sport another year. Seniors and Coaches Penny McMahon Heidi Plant Jill Spittle Joy Bergeron Rosemary Bowman Becky Dion Karen Kane Tammy Cusson w SP P.'v Coach Brigante The 1984 girls and boys cross country teams showed the desire and effort needed to have a successful season. The boys team finished with a 16-14 record, while the girls team showed some excellent individual performances during the season. Special recognition is given to Tracy Brassard for her first place finish in the State Meet in Division III. This allowed Tracy to compete in the New England Qualifier Meet. Recognition also given to John Decarreau, who represented our team in the New England Qualifier. We would like to express our thanks and best of luck to all the seniors on this year’s team. The Lady Spartans, while employing basically new offensive and defensive schemes under first-year coach, Mark Bentley, played hard and were in a position to win several ball games, only to fall victim to their own mistakes and lack of experience. The youth of the program is a definite positive point as only 2 seniors, Julie Shaw and Kelley Goulette, will be lost to graduation. With the return of several key performers and the addition of an improved JV squad, the varsity should be in a much stronger position next year. Also, with the late season improvement of the JV and what seems to be a good class of incoming freshmen, the overall girls’ basketball program at Winooski seems to be on a definite upswing. 104 Michelle Cote Beth Dion Tracy Brassard Penny McMahon Heidi Plant Brenda Crowley Megan Everts Tammie Racine 105 JV GIRLS BASKETBALL Teri Cusson, Bonnie Cushion, Chris Cartwright, Sherri Cote, Tammy Cusson, Ann Atkins, Ann Barton, Lori Fleming, Megan Everts, Coach Bentley. Their hard work and enthusiasm contributed to the marked im- provement in team play as the season went by, even though their 3-15-1 record may not show it. Several of the losses came in overtime, while others were decided in the last minutes. But even in the face of these tough defeats, the Spartan icemen refused to quit, and the last four games were among the best of the season. The Spartans were led by seniors Dave Myers and Manny Cueto, who will both be sorely missed next year. Dave was selected as the team’s MVP, and was also honored as an All-State choice at goaltender. Freshman Matt Villemaire was the leading scorer for the Spartans. With 11 of 13 players returning next year, the Spartan hockey team can look towards next season, hoping to pick up where they left off, play- ing good, team hockey! With only senior Jackie Lesage graduating, the Winooski track program is on an upward move with the remainder of the team returning next year. Under the direction of first-year coaches, Mike Peters and Mark Bentley, many of the athletes through hard work and determination were able to improve and record personal bests in their individual events for the 1984-85 season. Also, 3 of the 16 members of the boys team and 1 of the 6 members of the girls team qualified for the State Meet. Rick Langlais Alexis Miller 112 Brad Corrigan George Hinchliffe Karen Kane Sean Nary John Pickering Lynn Reese Jason Robare Tom Valley Tricia Vincent Jay Bessette Chris Cartwright Jim Page VARSITY BASEBALL Coach Carter, Manager Mark Metivier, Coach Brian Hambridge The varsity baseball team of 1985 had two seasons. The first season which lasted for approx- imately two weeks was one with some difficulty and frustrations for our team. With minor ad- justments and changes, we gradually turned our season in a more positive direction. The culmina- tion came with our selection to the State Tourna- ment and then proceeding to the State Semi- Finals, only to be defeated by eventual State Champion, Fair Haven. Our success was in great part due to the leadership of our seniors: Frank LaFond, Mark Metivier, Dave Myers, Mike Papariello, Rich Wells, and Randy Yandow. We wish them well. 114 Gary LaFond Mike Papariello I David Myers Shannon Cavanaugh v V Marc McQuinn Fred Edquid John Hamilton Scott Wells Mike Talbot — captain Jimmy Williams John Decarreau JV BASEBALL (left to right) Back row: Steve Gloyd, John Decarreau, Jeff Lamore, Mark Matton, Kraig Brunelle, Steve Williams, Todd Wells, Jim Companion, Coach Filion.
