Carillon 1962 - the combined efforts of the Senior Class are herein recorded - foreword We have attempted in these pages not only to present a record of the 1961-1962 school year, but also to capture the spirit of Winoo- ski High School for the memories of you who read this book in the years to come. May the demo- cratic ideals of our school live in our hearts and guide us toward a better world. DecfflSHons To the Utj|£ departan pt -- Mr. Blanchard,1 Mr. Burk fr. May I suggest that it is interesting to reflect upon the relation- ship of the words, cost and value,” as Wilde uses them here? At graduation time each year high school and col- lege seniors are offered much advice by speakers, or by writers of messages such as this; however, I have no ad- vice for you -- only a hope. ROBERT D. LULL, JR. Superintendent of Schools and painstaking (sometimes pain-giving) effort. With every best wish and with heartiest congratula- tions. I hope that, whatever else your education to date may have done for you, it has created an undeniable desire to seek, at all times and under all circumstances, for the TRUTH. ROBINSON MR. CAUCHON Zkcy Mave a Cot to Cook forward to Class distort As Sue and I walked into the restaurant, we saw Madeleine and Linda, whom we hadn't seen since graduation. We asked what they were doing, and they answered working, and they were both engaged and were going to have a double wedding. We started reminiscing about the good old days at W. H.S. which we hated terribly to leave. First, we talked about our Freshman year, in which kind old Mr. Burke took us, his Civics Class, on a trip to Montpelier. Poor him! We really had a good time, though. Also, in this year, we were pretty lucky not to have to go through a freshman reception. This too, was the year we moved up to the new beautiful W. H.S. building where it is now located. However, we will never forget the winter mornings at the old high school when school was canceled due to the heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. Our advisors were Miss Garvey, Miss Taylor and Miss Boucher. Our sophomore year was just about like any other sophomore year; we joined the Dramatics Club, which was in action for the first time; (In this, we won 2nd prize in the competition of the four upper grades). Then, some of our classmates joined sports, went out for cheering, F.T.A., etc. But -- all in all, it was pretty dull. The class advisors for that year were Mr. Sheridan and Miss Boucher and Miss Taylor. This year was the first year for a public production of our Dramatics Club; I Remember Mama. In the summer of our sophomore year, Mr. Sheridan took a few of us girls to Stratford, Connecticut, to the Shakespearian Festival. We all had a very good time, even though it lasted only two days. No.w, we started talking about our good 'ol junior year; the greatest so far. Since our class was the first to break away from tradition, we thought of having something different to make money for our class. With this, came the idea of a very successful Beatnik Dance in February. Also, this year we had three members of our Junior Class that made the All-State Basketball Team; Trooper, Dave Atkins, and Tom Clark. We were proud, that year. Following this, we were pretty well taken up with the up coming events of graduation: the prom, which was a great success, and the banquet. The theme of the prom was Mardi Gras. Everything went marvel- ously with our white linen table cloths, and centerpieces, and the St. Mike's band, but the only thing that didn't quite turn out right was the idea of balloons. Mr. and Mrs. Shea donated quite a bit of their time to help us and we finally got a huge net full of balloons tied up to the center of the ceiling which was supposed to fall at a certain time; it didn't. But --it was still a smash hit and the greatest prom W.H.S. has ever had. Then, came the committee for the banquet, and that was a sad occasion for the seniors. There was a trickle of tears here and there, and it was rather quiet. We left our junior year feeling very depressed about becoming seniors the following year and having to leave W.H.S. The advisors that year were Mrs. Carreau and Mrs. Plcoff. In this year came another production by the Dramatics Club, The Match- maker. ” Then, we spoke about going back and entering our senior year and how we felt about it. It had seemed so entirely different entering school and being the oldest students there, but it still made us seem proud. In that year, almost all of the school offices of the various clubs were held by us seniors such as President of Dramatics Club, of Student Council, Allied Youth, Var- sity Club, Captains of Sports, Carillon, Co-Editor of the Spartan, Pep Club, T.T.A., Com- mercial Club, Glee Club, etc. We did pretty well, too! Later in the year came the ordering of pictures, invitations, gowns, name-cards, and everything else to do with graduation. In that year, we fought like mad for senior privileges and finally received them. Even the teachers remarked about it, negatively though; they thought we had more privileges than they did. I don't think there ever was a class that graduated with so much emotion and feeling as our class did. Now — we are gone —.
