SL' ZF 'Q I I CGNTENTS Fo culty . . . Clcisses Sports Activities FOREWCDRD In the days of Phileas Fogg the impossible was done. Phileas Fogg made the trip around the world in 80 days. Jules Verne wrote a novel about the trip and Michael Todd's movie made the story immortal. Today, in the days of Winona High, the students are doing very ordinary things, or so they think. Actually, for three years on 180 days of every year they learn about a multitude of subjects, participate in sports, give speeches, raise money, give plays, produce style shows, usher for concerts, have parties, produce a prom, and every year, in June, about 250 students graduate. This iob of being a high school student is really a super-human proiect. So in this year of l959, we of the Radiograph Board will make their hard work immortal. We now present to you . . . AROUND W. H. S. IN 180 DAYS produced by the Radiograph. TABLE CDF .. l8 . 52 . 68 Q ,W a 1, ,R y'X', ex' 13: 'K fl- o5'N N. 'Yi' ' fx t I In - N.. ROW 2: Nancy Nowlan, Bonnie Svenningson, Nancy Yahnke, Homecoming Highlights Year Amidst happy tears and applause, the Top Ten Girls were presented to the student body during a cere- mony, Wednesday morning, October l. Suspense filled the auditorium as Jim Stansfield, narrator of the hilar- ious senior skit, entitled Around the World, announced the top ten girls with the spin of his roulette wheel. The delighted girls were escorted on stage by members of the W club and were presented to the entire student body. Voting in homerooms followed. The weighted ballot was used, with the senior's vote counting three points, the iunior's vote two points, and the sophomores, one point. As no bonfire was held this year, the very dignified coronation ceremony was presented in the auditorium the next day with background music by the orchestra. Steve Wally, President of the Student Council, presided. Co-captains Dave Livingston and Roy Hazelton crowned the attendants, Joan Larson, Karen Gislason, Lynn Hart- ner, and Diane Schulz, and the T958-T959 Homecoming Queen Marian Babcock. The other five lovely runners-up were Sue Sweazey, Nancy Yahnke, Nancy Nowlan, Bon- nie Svenningson, and Rosalie Carter. Football co-captains, R. Hazelton and D. With many fifth hour practices and some sIeep-stealing 8:00 a.m. practices, the choir was underway for another successful year. The concert choir had its first public appear- ance at their Christmas concert. February involv- ed the mid-winter concert which was given with the orchestra. In April, the choir went to some of the junior high schools of Winona to interest incoming sophomores in the choir. In May these choristers gave a spring concert, which won the hearts of the public with a well-balanced and varied program of both the lighter and the more serious types of music. The high point of the year was the Big Nine Music Festival in Red Wing. Baccalaureate and Commencement followed with the tradition- al You'lI Never Walk Alone. An important organization within an organi- zation is the Choir Council which decides upon the important issues of the choir. The choir officers worked with the Council to make this one of the best choirs ever. Also enioyed this year was the music of several soloists, the Madrigal Singers, and the Show Tune Chorale Group. The choir officers, Dave Livingston, Gary Goetzman, and Marlene Bauer, check their music for the next concert. ,411-'nm 5 r 7 A string for one of his stu- J Mr. Davenport tunes up an X ' P dent musicians. gm, .5 .. Sweet melodious strains drifting through the orchestra section of the halls of WHS are the results of the hard-practicing students ioined together to form our Senior High Orchestra. Under the rhythmic tapping of Mr. Daven- port's baton, each talented player brings forth beautiful music from his instrument to help make the composition complete. Occasionally some- one will hit a wrong note or play on the wrong beat, but, this can be easily remedied by careful practice. On December 3, 1958, the Orchestra gave an exhilarating performance at the Band-Orch- estra Christmas Concert given for the benefit of the Goodfellows. They had a larger attendance at this performance than any other concert given throughout the entire year. During the spring, the Orchestra will attend the Big Nine Conference and will excel in giving a wonderful performance. After hearing the enjoyable music played in the pit by the orchestra members, practi- cally every faculty member and student in the audience will agree, wholeheartedly, that our WHS Orchestra is tops. We are all anxiously waiting for the next concert that, again, will be a great success. Playing the bass becomes a community protect when the orchestra officers, K. Gislason C Johnson S. Senior Band Attains Additional Skills Who's in the limelight? Why none other than the WHS Band! Pepfests, annual concerts, basketball and football games, and Winona's parades-the high stepping orange and black clad bandsmen lend their cheery notes. The WHS students will long remember the band as they ushered in every Winona High Band 'IflCi'5' Ea-,BU g K- K'YzSk0' D' Klfal' and football game with the effective flag raising J'Koe' 'seecHe Un'fo'm5' ceremony, forming a United States Shield in red, white, and blue lights. Smooth tempo, rhythm, and good dynamics came with the always impressing concert sea- son, entertaining its many admirers through- out the season. The WHS spirits went soaring when the pepband struck up Oh Winona or Winona High, that's the school we're standing by, dur- ing basketball games. This year the band, along with the orchestra and choir went to the annual Big Nine Music Festival. This was a day ioyfully waited for, because it provided much fun and pleasure. Band members also know this meant lots of hard work in the preparation to top last year's band. The festival officially ends the year for - the band. Band, school, and community are able to look ahead to next year and say, Yup, Winona High always puts out a fine band. 84 I nv , lv-ns! ., ,,.,.. 1:34 ,,. 1' FRONT ROW: C. Graus, S. Spencer, R.
