Winona Senior High School 1916 Through The Years In the summer of 1852 Miss Angelina Gere a girl of 14 or 15 gathered a small group of children together and tried to teach Them a few fundamentals but the first school in Winona that really deserves the name was opened in the fall of 1853 Twenty five students were taught in a frame building at Front and Franklin Streets and funds for this school were paid by the parents of children who attended The Winona Republican of December 2 1856 reported that one hundred scholars were crowded into a room over a harness shop and one hundred more were waiting to get in The Winona High School was organized in 1861 and the first term f school was taught during the summer of 1861 in the second story of what was then known as the Hancock Building lt stood on East Fifth Street nearly oppo site the now destroyed St Joseph s Catholic Church In 1862 it was moved to the City Building where it remained until 1864 when it was changed to a large three-story frame building. In 1867, it was removed to what was known as the Central School and remained there till the dedication of a high school building in 1888. This new school cost 350,000 and had a capacity of 18 rooms. A school library was instituted in 1872. At a special meeting of the Board of Education in 1887, the new high school building was discussed, and a site on the corner and Washington Streets was chosen. At completion the building recitation rooms and one large assembly room which could be div rooms by sliding doors. This was replaced in 1925 by the ln March, 1913, the new Broadway and Johnson.
