The busy year was initiated with colorful cam- paigning for class officers. Throughout the year, class president, Bob Minard, vice-president, James Stansfieldp secretary, Dianne Schultz, and treas- urer, David Hobbs, together with helpful advis- ers, Mr. Schimmel and Miss Jacobson, led the class through its duties. In the brisk coolness of fall, the juniors com- menced their money earning program with the sponsoring of a Superstitution Ball, after an ex- citing football game, The class continued to shoulder their financial responsibility for that all important goal the Junior Senior Prom Colorful orange and black Winhawk penants were sold to the entire student body. A fun-packed evening at the YMCA was sponsored, giving a tremendous boost toward their foremost obiective. Finally the time arrived. All the anticipation and excitement that had been gradually building, lent itself to the carrying out of the Prom plan- ning. Many hours of hard labor went into the complete transfiguring of the gymnasium, not to mention the many more hours of fun and horse- play. The result was a dreamy, fairy like setting for an even dreamier, magical evening of dancing. Congratulations Juniors on the second of two outstanding and successful years. Good luck to you in your remaining one, your last, but far from least, your senior year. N . J cf xl so 1 as ROW lt P. Puck, D. Pearson, J. Lehnert, B. Ochrymowycz, D. Pahnke. ROW 2: R. Bundy, B. Make Strong Finish The Tables were turned in the next game with Winona bouncing back with a neat 20-13 victory over Faribault, preserving their victory with a strong last minute goal-line stand. Winona played its sharpest game of the sea- son when they tied a powerful Red Wing squad, 13-13. This proved a major upset for the Hawks as Red Wing was a heavy favorite to win. ln the last game of the season, Winona showed it could come back in the second half as they tied Northfield on a rainy night, 13-13. Winona's brightest light was halfback Bob Hazelton, who made All Conference and honor- able mention on the All State, while Pat Crum, Bob Anderson, and Paul Schreiber received hon- orable mention. Braun. s lifvn 'Qu-WW- W, -'r Netters Frozen Cut The Winhawk racket squad had a rather disappointing season in 1957, as they failed to win a match. However, the Hawks did gain much valuable experience, and Coach Luke is looking forward to a more profitable season in '58 as most of the squad will be returning. The netters faced some of the outstanding teams in the state when they faced Rochester and Austin, so actually their record is not as bad as it looks. They also played La Crosse Logan, one of the best teams in Wisconsin. With the experience gained and another year behind them, we hope to see the Hawk netters near the top in the Big Nine in the near future. Coached by Mr. Pendleton, the Winhawk linksters won four of their seven meets. ln the first meet of the sea- son the Hawks bowed to a powerful La Crosse Central team. Going back to La Crosse a week later the Winona golfers beat Logan in a close match. Owatonna and Lake City then fell victim to the Hawks, who in turn went down to Roch- ester and Mankato in succession. Red Wing lost by forfeit to Winona to wind up the regular sea- son. ln the district meet, at Lake City, Don Whit- ing won first place while Pete Kuklinski took second for Winona. Drama Club ls Core Ol Speech Activities Hats off to the Drama Club, which under the guidance of Mr. Stoltman and Mr. Clayton did much to make the Big Nine Speech Festival the success it was. The main purpose of the club is to impart a general knowledge of acting and play production to members. This aim was carried out under the leadership of the very capable officers, J. Grausnick, K. Aune, C. Eckhoff, K. Cada, and J. Belter. After the business agenda at the month- ly meetings was completed, a social hour with refreshments and entertainment in the form of skits, plays, and lectures followed. This year W. H.S. acted as host for the Big Nine Speech Festival on May 3. Over three hun- dred speech participants attended, including twenty-five local contestants. After an extremely busy day dealing in every phase of forensics, stu- dents and advisers gathered in the evening for a busman's holiday with a banquet and more speeches. With the successful returns of this festival, our speechsters moved confidently on to the District Ill contest at Winona State. Here nine contestants were awarded the right to enter the regional with DRAMA CLUB OFFICERS AND ADVISERS are sitting pretty on their new stage. SEATED- K. Aune, K. Cada, J. Belter, C. Eckhoff, J. Debate Squad and their adviser, Mr. Neuiahr, were a busy group as they dealt with this year's national debate topic- Resolved: that United States direct economic aid to individ- ual countries should be limited to technical assist- ance and disaster relief. The clebaters opened the season with a begin- ning ot the season discussion tourney at Eau Claire, followed by tournaments at La Crosse, Eau Claire, and a vveek-end of debating at Gustavus Adolphus. Strings Make Melodious Music Into the woodshed go R. Jones and J. Hill to practice a little finesse. Let's take that run once more, violins. Basses, all have your bows going in the same direction! Six hours of practice a day and you'll sound like the Minneapolis Symphony in no time at all. To the students in orchestra, Mr. Davenport's words are very familiar. Sometimes the soothing music produced by the talented musicians had a slumber-producing ef- fect. But all it took was a slip of someone's bow making a horrible squawk, and everyone who had any notion of sleep was sitting up straight in his chair. From its performance in the pit during the All School Production to its many scheduled concerts throughout the year, the or- chestra is symbolic of the numerous opportuni- ties for musical education offered at W. H. S. Orchestra students practiced six hours per week in school. Of course, they were expected to prac- tice that much out of school, too. When one con- cert was completed, we began to prepare for the next. For weeks we practiced the same pieces un- til most of the tunes became indelibly stamped in our minds, and students found themselves hum- ming Beethoven's Fifth all day long. ROW l: J. Steege, B. One feels sorry for anyone who happens to be going the wrong way near the music department and gets caught in the mad rush in and out of the band room each morning. Every morning during the football season found the stalwart black and orange uniformed band at the Jefferson Stadium drilling under the watchful eye of Mr. Andrus. After snow covered the marching field, great pains were taken to get the band in shape for the concert season. Many a baton was bent over a certain music stand. Tonel More Tone! was a frequent refrain at these times. All the practicing and polishing were the needed ingredients for the tip top programs the band gave. ln addition, the pep band sent W. H.S. school spirit soaring at student rallies and bas- ketball games, while the Dreamliners provided the rhythm at several school dances. Spring was ushered in by another concert, and another successful year came to a close as the band journeyed to Owatonna for the Big Nine Music Festival. Once again, Winona High can be proud of its band and its fine showing in all their appearances as the Winhawk tooters willingly served their school and community. it Q me K. 3 QL I ROW l: D. Council Sets Our School Standards Now what can be more provoking to a group of industrious students who are always breaking their pencils, than not having a pencil sharpener? This year found the Student Council solving many grave and imposing problems, such as the one the students in honor study found themselves with - no pencil sharpener! But the Student Coun- cil came to the rescue, to the happy relief of the students on priv , and installed a pencil sharp- ener. One of the big projects of the Student Council was the Christmas Holiday Dance which was a ROW l: T. Mauszy- cki, S. Wheeler, M Miller, J. Harders, D Blanchord, P. Wil- liams, C. Waldo. ROW 2: J. The Student Council did not forget the mean- ing of Christmas when they brought joy and hap- piness into the hearts of poor unfortunate chil- dren at a Christmas party. The Student Council exhibited excellent committee work on both of these ventures. Representatives from our Student Council participated in several Student Council conventions throughout the state, and brought back interesting and encouraging reports which should make us glad that we attend Winona High School. Students Supervise Wide Variety The Activity Room hostesses, supervised by Mrs. Hunter, Girls' Advisor, provide a little hos- pital all their own in 204, for girls who become ill during the school day. The hostesses see to it that the room is always kept clean, orderly, and quiet. lf a girl feels very ill, her parents are noti- fied and she is given transportation home. Let's give all of these groups a big cheer for the mar- velous service they have given W. H. S. Keeping the school library in tip-top shape is the task of the library assistants at W. H.S. Mainly their duties are checking books and magazines in and out, shelving them, and keeping track of over-due books. Willingly, and with a smile, these girls are glad to offer information concern- ing school references or the materials one may want for leisure reading. The Future Teachers of America also sponsored a football and a basketball dance to obtain funds to financially aid a deserving senior planning on a teaching career.
