The society held meetings each month, at which times new members r' were inducted. Scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service were stressed in all work and programs during the year. Of the four standards, citizenship and scholar- ship were especially emphasized. The honor society system aided the students in maintaining their scholastic vigor and enthusiasm. In addition to taking part in practice debates at Lewis- ton and La Crosse, a 'team attended the regional tournament at South St. Paul. Shirley Worner, Tom Richards, Bob Murtaugh, and Kirk Belville, repre- sented Winona at the state tournament. The seventeen students who entered into the project were guided by Alister MacDonald. The national debate question discussed was i'Resolved: That every able-bodied male citizen of the United States should have one year full time military training before attaining the age of twenty-four. The Slbeczkefs Stand On March fourth over a hundred youthful orators representing thirteen high schools met in Winona for the newly organized District Three Speech Festival, directed by Frank Mahovlich. The weeks of practice produced good results for the three WHS students who entered. Superior ratings were giv- en Melva Knoll, Ruth Mei- nert, and Winfield Peter- son at both the district and regional contests. Melva and Winheld attended the state contest, while Ruth was an alternate. Melva gave interpretations of The Fool's Prayer and Little Boy Blue in the manuscript division, while Ruth presented a dramatic portrayal of Lady MacBeth from an excerpt of the Shake- spearean play. Winfield, representing the boys, gave an ovation White Crosses on the Pacific . Row 1: M. Maier. N. Schuth, D. Kindt, M. Me-inert, S. VVorner. Row 2: Olson. A. Mattison, G. Wandsnider, B. Hill. M. RJ Shimmering satins, ethereal lighting effects, and impressionistic sets highlighted the Christ- mas Pageant, Gloria , presented December 17. Directed by Frank Ma- hovlich, the members of the cast became Biblical characters of ages past. The story was based on the flight of Elizabeth with her child from King Herod and his soldiers. The cast included Lor- raine Wooden, William McCarl, Robert Sheehan, Ruth Meinert, Jack Mer- tes, james Mertes, Timo- thy Burke, Richard Schollian, Richard Holm- berg, John Koscielski, Ednah Olson, Melva Knoll, Betty Nelson, Dennis Carpenter, Jack Stehn, Robert William- son, Wilfred Fraser, and Betty Ludtke. Characters in a tableaux from the Christmas Pageant are rep esented by J. Mertes, E. Olson, M. Knoll, B. Nelson, R Meinert, Kneeling are R. Holmberg, J. Stehn, R. Schollian. I On Sta ge. Entangled in the problems of The Fourth Mrs. Phillips are R. Sheehan, B. Kopp. J. Stirneman, and E. Olson. Amateur actors and ac- tresses from the newly developed drama class came forward this year to take their bows on the stage of W. H. S. in their presenta- tion of three one-act plays. The three comedies were On The Air , The Bride Wore Red Pajamas , and The Fourth Mrs. Phillips. The latter play was entirely produced and directed by the class as a quarterly project. Stage terms, posi- tions, and business, rapidly became second nature to the drama students under the guiding hand of in- structor Frank Mahovlich. Lighting and make-up ef- fects were also studied by the class. 31 h ann W McCarl A Johansen E Marsh R frrtchfifld h H J Rue m h n M h vhch drrectrar Fxrst TUV' lefgtceklfghervlll Yblhsdrt -l Toning' lllxdhgfdgrl. Somehow the nine members ofthe class, pushed and prodded by Miss Daley and saved from countless disasters by Lorraine, managed to provide you every other week with a record of school activities, some fancy features, and an occasional bit of gossip. Hand in hand with Felix, the W, H. S. mascot, they resurrected the Hi-Newt and set it on its feet again, somewhat wobbly, but determined. Doing double duty as both newspaper publishers and publications committee, the class kept the staff of the Republican Herald busy blue-penciling their literary efforts. The members of the KNOW YOUR CITY CLUB went all out during the year to explore the most inter- esting spots in Winona. The group made it a point first 'to study about and then visit the place under dis- cussion. Because of the tremendous number of students eager to really know their city, three clubs were organized under the supervision of Mrs. Boyd, Miss Nelson, and Miss Hillyer. Among the places of interest visited by the three groups during the year were the Peerless Chain Company, Schaffer's Gate City Laundry, Teachers College, and the City Health Department. 50 Town Tourists Know Your City Club Row 1: J. The group delved into the intricacies of nursing and took up all the tasks, that make up the care of a patient. Using the Red Cross Course, the girls learned the arts of bathing a patient making' a bed with a person in it, pulse, temperature, and respiration taking, feeding a patient, and various First aid techniques. In the opener the Winonans bowed down to a strong Logan club. Injuries suffered by Captain Bambenek caused the backfield star to turn in his suit for the season. The following week, a more experienced Winona eleven swept over a much-publi- cized Red Wing squad. Discovering unconquerable Faribault's weakness, pass defense, too late, the Winhawks were unable to hit pay dirt in their second loss of the season. The Mankato field proved unlucky for a battering Hawk club who fought their way into scoring position six times before finally rallying on a block kick. Bouncing back a determined local eleven handed an unbeaten Austin squad their only defeat of the season. Like a well-oiled machine the Winona host rolled over the equally rated Owatonna Indians. Intent on xictory the Winhawks lined up to meet their traditional rix al Rochester in the homecoming game. Frequent shouts of Jose , Yo-Ho , and other friendly quips vigorously colored practice sessions, Even with a nucleus of only three lettermen Captain Denny Carpenter, Dick Holmberg, and .Ioe Bambenek, who was out for half the season with a broken ankle the hapless Hawks never let down and eked out some close wins that could have been toss-ups.
