Bowc, Sunlclman, Puslg nmnagt r, The first athletic team ever to use the name Winnhawks, the '40 football team produced a record worthy of that name. The season started with a bang, Winona outplaying Red Wing before one of the largest crowds ever assembled at Maxwell Field. However neither team was able to score, and the game ended in a scoreless tie. For the rest of the season the Winnhawks played good ball, always losing and winning by slim margins. just as the season had started with a bang, so it ended. The traditional game with Rochester on Armistice Day was played in one of the severest storms ever to hit Minnesota. Winona lost 13-6, thus end- ing the season with three wins, four losses, one tie, and third place in the Big Nine Conference.
