r ff 4 lm f Pro Bono Puhlicou was the Latin inscription over the tloor of the high school erected in 1898, This motto served to inspire and stimulate suceeetlf ing generations with respectful iulmiriition for secontliiry etlucgition in Winona. This huiltling, situiiteel on the corner of Washington .intl lirogiclwxiy on the sitc of the present Junior High School, had two entrances. Including the hiisement and the tower there were four stories to the huiltling: in the hasement, the iginitor liveclg on the secontl floor were the principg1l's office. the superintentlents office, and several eliiss roomsg on the thirtl tloor w ere the class rooms and the freshman and sophomore tissemhly rooms. Gas was used to light the school for some years. The winclows were spacious, and the building was coniprirativcly well ventilutetl. Acconling to the

HE NEW The present Senior High School was huilt in 1915, hut classes tlitl not move in until ahout Christmas of 1916. The oltl high school across the street was left stancling and was usecl as the Junior High until a new one was huilt. The erection of these huilclings was another step in the develops ment of hetter facilities for secontlary etlucation in Winona. The present Senior High has remainetl almost unchangetl in appearance. hut more motlern equipment has heen atltletl ancl repairs have heen made to keep the huiltling up to moclern stanclartls. ln 192T a clecitlecl improvef ment was matle with the huiltling ol a new wing. This wing inclutles a very large. spacious authtorium with a seating capacity of ahout 14170, a large gymnasium which may he tlivitlecl into two sections hy a huge clrop curtain, a heautiful swimming pool, locker rooms antl showers for the hoys and girls. .-Xs the huilcling ancl equipment were improvetl, so were the courses en- largecl and hetteretl. lfire courses are now ollierecl: commercial, general. acatlemic, inclustrial, antl technical.
