Class ranks, SAT scores, papers to be written, and the social aspect of school can be quite mind-boggling. However, some of the things that make high school very important in every- one’s life are the good times of Wildcat victo- ries, prom, shows, homecoming week, and even the daily lunch period filled with sharing, car- ing, and laughter. As the lives of the Wildcat graduates go on, the memories remain in their hearts forever. While the last days of the 1985-86 year went by we cherished each moment together. Re- flecting on these great moments is what Gone But Not Forgotten” is all about. 3 Senior Class Officers ing becretary Corresponding Secretary — Melanie Richmond imsurer — Ashley Reid — Marcia Bensoh 5 John Scott Balfentine William Lawrence Barber Kimberly Michelle Belton Zemla Rene Belton Cynthia Marie Branham Elizabeth Jeanie Branham 6 Linda Michelle Belton Marcia L. Wilson Science Ml Principal, Lemuel C. Stephens This is a time long to be remembered by those who are the LAST OF THE FIGHTING WILDCATS. Born in I960, the CATS” had a long and glorious reign. The memories will be fresh even when the body is old and worn with years. Many will rue the demise of the tradition of Winnsboro High School. Some bitter- ness will never fade at her closing. How- ever, I urge you to be proud to have been a parr of her legend — and be proud that her departure marks the beginning of the most significant educational event in Fairfiels County history ■ equality for ALL high school students in the county. The quality of the educational opportu- nities improves each day-, and as more parents and significant others” become more involved in the educational process, we shall soon reach the pinnacle of excel- lence, I am delighted to be a part of your lives, and I truly hope 1 have in some way, been a positive influence. Remember always that I care about what you do, what you say, and how you conduct your lives. Best wishes, 42 S. Wilson — Assistant Principal K. Brown — Assistant Principal 43 B. McDonald — Secretary Attendance Superintendent Dr. R.C. Buchanan The time has come to bid a farewell to a historic part of our educational system. To see such a landmark as Winnsboro High School be- ing phased out is a very sensitive issue; howev- er, we can find some comfort in the fact the building will continue to serve the community as a new middle school far into the future. To those who have walked her halls and tak- en advantage of her learning opportunities, I challenge them to keep her memory alive and to take pride in the important role she has played in each of their lives. Live on Winnsboro High; you’ve served your purpose well. You may be gone, but you shall never be forgot- ten.” 44 Left to right, L. Hoyle, H. Heath, B. Rhyne, R. Able Director — R. Mazyck Dedication This year's Halcyon is dedicated to the Wildcat, our mascot through the years. We have asked each of the coaches to share with us some of their thoughts as we end the era of the CAT”, long live its memory. Coach K. Atkerson, Head Football Coach The Winnsboro Wildcat has been a part of my life for 20 years. In those 20 years I have never been ashamed to tell anyone, anywhere that I was a Winnsboro Wildcat. The manner in which the symbol Wildcat has carried on has always been well known in athletics. Out manned, smaller in size, but always bigger in heart and spirit. Wildcats have always been known throughout the state as a group that will try to the very end regardless of the outcome of the game. This is what I as a Wildcat was taught and live by and what I hope all Wildcats that I have been fortunate enough to work with will carry over into how they approach life. At the end of this year the Wildcat will no longer stalk its prey in Winnsboro? but I will always feel that great tradition, pride, and spirit that has made the Wildcat a figure that may be gone but a long time forgotten. I join all Wildcats past and present in saying, ”Go Get Em Catslf So Many! Good ones, too many to count! Bad ones too few to mention! I'll remember the Carolina Blue to which I'll always be true! I’ll remember all the fine young men who wore the colors. I’ll remember the Big Games, the trophies, and the fans! I’ll remember a faculty of which became my family. I’ll remember the students who cared! And those that dared! Memories! More than a few! Because my blood runneth Carolina Blue! Coach E. Raines, Boys Varsity Basketball 88 Coach R. Sims Girl’s Varsity Basketball In the past two years that I have been here, I under- stand why we are called the Wildcats. Game after game; win or lose, the Wildcats have remained tough. In basketball, their effort has given them another confer- ence championship and in football they have turned the program around to be a contender. Only through hard work, discipline, and unselfishness has this happened, with a great group of student-athletes. The Winnsboro Wildcats will soon be gone but not forgotten. The Wild- cat is going through a transformation which will make it even better (the Griffin). Reflecting on my coaching experiences at Winnsboro High is one of mixed emotions. Being from Winnsboro had some advantages, and I'm sure there were some disadvantages as well. Coaching and teaching have been an ambition of mine since I can remember. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching football, girls basketball, and baseball during my stay at Winnsboro High. I've coached and taught a lot of fine young men and women, and along this way I hope I’ve had a positive effect on their lives. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than seeing my former ath- letes and students make a positive contribution to our society. 1 would like to thank all of them for providing me with so much satisfaction. Very few people have the opportunity to work on a job that they really enjoy and I'm grateful for having had this opportunity. As the Wildcat” moves on I’m filled with mixed emotions because the young people of this county de- serve only the very best in what they are trying to accomplish. Coach W. Allman Boys J.V. Basketball 89 I have seen our young men and young ladies give their best over the years. Since 1975 our kids have broken 28 out of 31 WHS school records. We have had outstanding performances over the years. Matthew Russell winning the 1977 AAA Upper State Champion- ship in the shot put. Sandra Hendersorfwinning the 1982 AAA Lower State Championship in the 100 meter high hurdles. Richard Driggers winning the 1981 AAA Lower State Championship in the pole vault. Sonya Davis run- ning in the AAA State Championship as an eighth grad- er. Our most memorable moment was the winning of the 1982 5AAA Conference Girls Track Championship. The great memories tjjiat I have are about the people that I have coached because they mean so much to me. Coach S Cahaly, Girls Volleyball The Lady Wildcats first dominated the court in 1977 and were coached by Nadene Williams. Five coaches and eight years later Coach Sharon Cahaly sat to write an epathy of the Wildcat years. When I first came to the Wildcat country, all of our volleyball games were played at other schools. We wore raggedy basketball uniforms and did not have anything to call our own. Through the cooperation and help of Kenny Atkerson and Dr. Thompson we acquired all of the luxuries that the game had to offer. I am sure that those who have been affiliated with the volleyball team will remember the happy, as well as the sad times that have passed our way. Personally, I will never forget the challenges I have faced and all of great players I have had the opportunity to coach. When the 1985 season ended we retired the wildcat jerseys, but the memories will never be locked behind closed doors. Coach E. Hightower, Girls Track 90 Mrs B. Harmon, Cheerleader Sponsor I have been a loyal Wildcat since my own high school days. As a graduate of Mount Zion Institute, I proudly hailed as a Wildcat. Those were very special days in my life, and I shall always remember cheering for the black and gold 'Cats. When I came to teach at Winnsboro High School in 1962,1 was happy to once again be in Wildcat territory. I have always been proud of this school, the students and the Cats♦ Through the years, I have enthusiastically followed the teams because I believe that a teacher needs to be involved with the total program of the school and because I truly love sports. As 1 near retirement, I have many happy memories of my Wildcat days. Perhaps I was born a Wildcat; I know I shall die a Wildcat. 91 92 W hLS Football Cheerleaders Bottom to top, left to right C Shelley, B, Davis, J. Fitzsimmons, K. Smith, L. Wright. M. Schachner, D.
