Proper use of grammar is stressed through themes and papers pertaining to literature which the students have studied. These, along with other aides, have helped thor- oughly prepare students with a substantial basic knowledge of mathematics. 48 49 SCIENCE Miss Maner, Mrs. Cannon, and Mr. Reid have exerted much effort to pass on to the students their knowledge of the world of science. In Home Ec., students learn how to become respon- sible homemakers, and stu- dents in the typing classes learn the necessary techniques that can be used in business or in college. 55 ART The Art Department pro- vides a means by which the students can express their feelings. Mr. Kinard teaches the students the fundamentals of art and how to apply them to their own style. Toward the end of the year, the art class exhibited ceram- ics and paintings they had worked on during the school year. Mr. Robert Kinard 56 FRENCH The purpose of the WHS French Department is to introduce the students to different cultural back- grounds. Mrs. Coleman spends much of her time and effort to prepare the students for their courses in foreign languages to come later in college. Mrs. Martha Coleman 57 BAND Under the direction of Mr. John Holtzclaw, the Music Department has brought re- cognition to WHS. The band provided entertainment at the football games also. Seibles. 58 LIBRARY The Library provides a place for the students to do research work, check out books, and read the paper. Miss Stultz and Mrs. Bennett help the students locate materials that they need. 59 PHYSICAL AND DRIVER'S EDUCATION Mrs. Sweeney, Coach Catoe, and Coach Raines try to build physically fit students. Through push-ups, sit-ups, and bending exer- cises, students become physically fit. Not only do they exercise, but they also play volleyball, softball, and basketball. Coach Catoe and Coach Raines also help the students learn the driving principles. They also learn to take care of cars. They help the students solve problems and make decisions. Dewese, W. McCants, T. Melvin, R. Moore. BLOCK W The Block “W” Club is an athletic organization whose purpose is to promote good sportsmanship and to emphasize the importance of physical fitness. Membership is limited to students who have earned a Winnsboro High School Block Letter. This year the club underwent an extensive candy sale to finance its annual Athletic Ban- quet. CHORAL ENSEMBLE AND CHORUS The Chorus is a group con- sisting of several students of Winnsboro High. It was organ- ized to stimulate students’ in- terst in learning how to sing and express themselves through songs. It was also designed to provide experi- ences for students to develop a deeper appreciation for all types of music. The Choral Ensemble was formed to promote a better understanding of music. Bass. 79 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is an organization composed of stu- dents from each grade level in the school. They strive to carry out the business concerning the entire student body. Its main purpose is to promote a better understanding among all stu- dents and to help solve their problems. The Council gives the students an active part in the governing of the school. Student Council has spon- sored several projects this year. Dances have been sponsored, such as the Sock Hop and the Junior-Senior prom. An entrance gate has been built through the work of the council and speed barriers have been placed in the parking lot. Also, the council entered a float in the Christmas parade.
