MARY JIM GUNTER ■ MRS. MARY 12 B. KIRKLAND —-t1 DEDICATION We, the Senior Members of the Halcyon Staff, wish to dedicate the 1973 HALCYON to Mrs. Mary Jim Gunter and Mrs. Mary B. Kirkland. These two teachers have contributed much to the success of our high school careers. Showing a sincere interest in each student, both of these devoted teachers were always on hand to help us with our smallest problems. Their smiling faces and genial wit served to brighten even the gloomiest days. We are truly indebted to Mrs. Gunter and Mrs. Kirkland for their contributions to Winnsboro High School. K. McLendon, Principal of Winnsboro High School, has many problems to solve as chief administrator. Helping students make decisions and solve problems is a common practice which leaves them inwardly satisfied just knowing that they could help an individual in need. Their services to the student body range from helping a student decide what would best accommodate his per- sonal desires and interests af- ter graduation to giving a student a much needed paper clip. The teachers of this department have done their utmost to ex- pose students to material that will someday be beneficial in their social development. Through the use of records and films, the English teachers are better equipped to aid the student in his learning. One fundamental which most of these teachers stress is writ- ing. Through writing, the stu- dent develops a more mature manner of expressing himself. Mrs. Estelle B. Butler Mrs. Barbara M. Harmon Mrs. Mary B. Kirkland Mrs, EleanorS. These aids have helped Mrs. Gunter, Mrs. Ingram, Mrs. Coleman, and Mrs. Cunning- ham to promote the purpose of the Math Department-to pre- pare the students for their futures in college and business in the complex world of today. This involves solving chemical equations, dissecting organisms, and doing biological research. 25 SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Depart- ment endeavors to present his- torical backgrounds and social problems in an interesting way. The teachers believe that ex- posure to foreign cultures is of great benefit to students, and through the study of the problems of modern society, students are better prepared as citizens of their nation. In Home Ec., stu- dents learn how to become con- scientious homemakers, and stu- dents in the typing, bookkeeping, and shorthand classes learn skills which they can use in busi- ness or in college. Mrs. Gladys L. Bass Mr. Willie J. Heath Mrs. Mary Alice McKeown 29 MUSIC This year the Music Depart- ment was under the direction of Mr. John Holtzciaw. Through hard work on both his part and the band’s part, the band won first, second, and third places in the Newberry, Great Falls, and Winnsboro Christmas Parades respectively. WHS thanks the band, who has not only brought recognition to the school but has also provided fine entertainment at the football games. Mr. John Holtzciaw Top: Mr. Holtzciaw helps the band with a new song. Left: Band students “toot their troubles away.” Right: “Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn.” 30 ■■ ART The main objective of the Art Department is to instill a sense of self-expression and creativity in students. It is also a medium in which the more expressive student may make unlimited use of his ability. With Mr, Reed's guid- ance, each student is taught the basic fundamentals of art and is shown how to apply them to his own particular style. Top: Students express themselves by applying the basic fundamentals of art. Left: Ricky Green shows how much concentration and patience is needed to produce expressive art. 31 LIBRARY AND STUDY HALL Study hall is provided for students who wish to use school time for completing homework assignments or who wish to study for upcom- ing classes. Study hall is a very valuable part of WHS life. The WHS library is pro- vided for students who need to do research, check out much needed books for Eng- lish, or read the daily paper. Miss Stultz and Mrs. Johns are always on hand to help stu- dents locate materials. Mrs. Coleman spends much of her time and effort to prepare the students for their courses in foreign languages to come later in college. Mrs. Martha B. Coleman Top: Martha Meng dreams of speak- ing French in Paris. Bottom: Mrs. Coleman listens as a student answers a question in French. 33 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND DRIVERS’ EDUCATION As physical education teachers, Mrs. Sweeney, Coach Raines, and Coach Catoe are always trying to build physically fit stu- dents. They spend much time with the basics — push-ups, sit-ups, side-straddle hops, and bending exercises — but they always save time for games such as volleyball and basket- ball. Besides teaching gym, Coach Raines and Coach Catoe also use their teaching skills in another direction — drivers’ education. In drivers’ ed., students learn the principles of driving, and they also learn ways to care for their car. Everyone is indebted to these coaches for making our highways safer. Mr. Wayne Catoe Mr. Eddie Raines Mrs. Celeste Sweeney Top left: Coach Catoe allows a student to test his book learning in a practical capacity. Top right: The girls’ gym class tries basketball for a change. Bottom: A phys. ed. class plays volleyball for recreation and exercise 34 CAREER EDUCATION Career Education is an inter- disciplinary team approach con- sisting of a coordinated program which interrelates a skill train- ing program with the academic areas. This approach provides students with various learning activities, and it also aids them in choosing a career. The team of teachers who worked with the Career Program this year were Mrs. Kirkland, Mrs. Cannon, Mrs. Ingram, and Mrs. Ross. Mr. Robert Fickling and Mr. Earl Bonner were also involved in this program. 35 ORGANIZATIONS 37 STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW: C. Stone, T. Weir, R. Price, B. Alexander, M. Turner, L Lumpkin. Some of them were happy, and some of them were sad; but all of these memories will remain a part of each of us forever. It is the hope of the 1973 Halcyon Staff that this edition of the HALCYON has been able to preserve some of the fondest memories of the 1972-1973 school year. Dear Winnsboro, oh how we love thy name: May we forever strive to bring thee fame; Scholarship, pride, and faith in God above, Compose our standards, so we love. Your fidelity still lingers in our heartst And from thy memories may we ne’er depart. Dear Winnsboro, we love you, more than words can say, As we pledge our loyalty in this humble way; With your standards well abide, and your precepts too, Through our lives, you’ll be our guide, Winnsboro, we love you, we love you, Winnsboro, 182
