They attended summer band camp in preparation for the football season and their trip to Furman University. They presented half-time entertain- ment at all football games, attended the S.C. State Solos Ensembles. The band, in its effort to reach higher goals, held sight reading clinics under the direction of Mr. Pat Garnett. The results of these efforts were presented in their two con- certs. Through the band’s activities and well-rounded program, W.H.S. has profited greatly. Band Director: Mr. Joe Martin. 43 OFFICERS: Cynthia Pullen, 2nd Lieut.; Dub Miller, 1st Lieut.; Tim Boulware, 2nd Lieut; Fairy Mincey, 2nd Lieut. SPORTS THE ATHLETE People tell me that I’m an athlete And I hope that the description's right. Because that's what I've aspired to be And that's the goal on which I set my sights. What it takes to deserve that name I have pondered over in my mind. Will it come only when I gain fame? Will the answer be elusive and hard to find? I asked myself these questions when I was young Now those days are over and gone. Fortunately time has brought the answer to some Others have been answered by the roar of the throng. An athlete should be one of a strong and proud breed Yet humble and grateful for his ability. Willing to sacrifice self-pleasure wherever the need. Able to accept victory with humility. When his playing days are over and done His moments of glory passed away. He should pass a proud heritage on to younger ones And a sense of direction which won't lead them astray. Finally, he should leave the field of competitive play With good memories of those this path led him to meet. A better man for the price he paid Grateful for the privilege of being an athlete. 44 VARSITY FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: E. Yongue, W. Renwick, E. Ellenburg, J. Pope, R. Wood, C. Hornsby, G. Coleman, B. If we work hard enough, we'll win, and we’re gonna work! !” These could have been the words of the Winns- boro High Coaching Staff that started the ’67 team to the best sea- son in Winnsboro High history. They worked, and they won. In a game made for strong men, they proved themselves to be the strong- est. Our team went through the regu- lar season undefeated, and even un- scored upon in several games. They captured the Catawba Conference - Title and fought their way to the Up- per-State Championship. They may be rated Number Two, but to us, they'll always be NUMBER ONE. Even in the face of a 12-1-0 ac- complishment, there is a challenge for the next team, a 13-0-0 season. But, here are the ones that started it. Here are our champions. MANAGERS: Charlie Freeman, Benny Foster, Jackie Branham, Laurence Powell, Flenry Adams. FEATURES Each student In Winnsboro High School has an opportunity to participate in the school’s many activities. By participating in the various activities, W.H.S. students broaden their intellectual capa- city while having fun in the process. There is no season in which W.H.S. is not busy with many varied activities. The next few pages will review the activities of Winnsboro High School. 68 Maybe you'll win next year, Jack. Happiness is being chosen MISS HALCYON. Becky gets souvenir for Bunny. Suspense mounted as the largest crowd ever to witness the MISS HALCYON contest awaited the final decision of the judges. The decision was certainly a diffi- cult one to make considering the gracefulness and loveli- ness of the twenty contestants. The climax finally arrived with the crowning of Miss Martha Johnson as MISS HALCYON 1968. Martha is certainly very worthy of this honor. Not only is Martha a lovely young lady, but she is one of the most well-rounded students at WHS. She was chosen Best All-Round by her senior classmates and served as editor of the CONSOLIDATED COMMENTS this year. Winnsboro High School is very proud of its MISS HALCYON 1968. 71 MISS SENIOR Miss Bobbie Beam 72 MISS JUNIOR Miss Sarah Dorrier 73 MISS SOPHOMORE Miss Ginger Stevenson MISS FRESHMAN Miss Elinor Wylie MISS SUB-FRESHMAN Miss Diane Smith 74 MISS HALCYON and Her Court. SENIOR SPONSORS: Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Lesemann, Mrs. Hite, Mrs. McKeown, Mrs. Bowling (not pictured) WHAT IS A SENIOR? A senior is a person who can look back over four terrible, torturing years in Winnsboro High, and wonder why he's going to miss it. He can remember the seasons that these years represent. In the spring he was a freshman, young, eager, and maybe a little foolish. But as his summer sophomore year came, he real- ized that the hard work, not the heat formed the perspiration beads on his forehead. In the fall of his junior year he realized that winter was near. He also realized that all the seasons so far had been warm and beautiful. How could win- ter even compare with them. Then, it happened. He was a senior, in the winter of his school year. The winter was hard, but it seemed to bring classmates closer. After this season people would scatter to the wind to begin their seasons again in some college. Some would go in their chosen vocations. During high school some took college preparatory; some busi- ness, and others took general education. But no matter where the seniors go, they'll always have one thing in common, the spring, summer, fall, and winter spent in Winnsboro High School.
