1964 HALCYON WINNSBORO HIGH SCHOOL WINNSBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA FOREWORD The school spirit experienced by the graduating class of 1964 during its four short years at Winnsboro High School has been an inspiration and a joy that has helped make that period one of happiness,. ambition, and achievement. Through the pages of this, the fourth volume of the Halcyon, the annual staff has tried to reflect this loyalty and enthusiasm which has contrib- uted so much to the success of the educational and personal development of each student. It is hoped that this book will be one of pride and pleasure to us now, and in the future will serve as a reminder of the friendships, ideals, and opportunities made possible by our association with Winnsboro High School. 3 DEDICATION Because she has endeared herself to all of us with her ever ready smile, her wholesome friendliness to us, her sincere interest in our student life, and her sym- pathetic co-operation in all that we undertake, we, the members of the annual staff of nineteen hundred and sixty-four, do dedicate this, the fourth volume of the HALCYON, to MRS. But I can't change my tassle; it's sewed to this side! 131 CLASS POEM The mirth, the laughter, the carefree song Of the child has dwindled and passed along. We are no longer children, but young men and women Yes, and it won't be long! Winnsborof thou glory of our years! Our final farewell all too swiftly nears. Too soon, it seems, time ticks away To bring alas our parting day— So soon alone to shape our own careers! We here depart from home and friends To trod life's path henceforward to its ends. We bid them all a fond adieu, For each of us must seek anew A way of life awaiting 'round timeless bends. Teachers, you shall ever be The mold of young mind and personality. We leave you with gratitude, yet sorrow— You must remain to guide others to their tomorrow. Yours is a noble and necessary responsibility. In the years yet to come and pass, Mem'ries great and small we shall amass; As we sit and ponder and reminisce, We'll recall with equal bliss The joys, the trials of each high school class. CLASS HISTORY For most of us the most treasured possession we shall have when we leave high school will be our mem- ories. The History of the Class of 1964 is filled with many occasions of fun and happiness as well as op- portunities to improve and grow even as our school improved and grew. We were one of the five fortunate classes to enter a bright new high school. We had had varying ex- periences as sub-freshmen at Blackstock, Greenbriar, Jenkinsville, Mt. Zion, Monticello, Ridgeway, and for a few, other schoofs. Our freshman year at Winnsboro High was even more exciting than our sub-freshman year had been at the other schoofs because our teach- ers as well as the upper classmen were just as inex- perienced as we were. It was a wonderful and, at times, confusing experience. However, long before we became sophomores, the program was well-organized and we were a part of a forward-looking, challenging, and demanding educa- tional institution. Probably our best memories of this period are of the new friendships which were formed with classmates from the different schools. Of course, we shall also remember our first encounter with such foreign subjects as Algebra and Latin. As sophomores, we expanded our interest in extra curricular activities. Some joined clubs, others took part in the music program, and we all supported the fine athletic teams that were molding a record of good CLASS PROPHECY Just twenty years ago our class marched down the aisle to receive our high school diplomas and out into a new and watchful world. Our Master of Ceremonies, Rusty Price, has taken leave of his duties as owner of Monk's Mortuary to find out what each member of the class is doing and what success they have made in their chosen profession. In this year of 1984, we are having our reunion at a place which all of us certainly remember having had many good times, the park. Since the Hut was the scene of many of those good times which we shared during our high school days, it was decided that our first reunion be held there. Suddenly amid the confusion and chatter comes a distinct voice. It is Judi Spires telling of her accomplishment. She held a position as giggle box for the sound effects of RCA until her box turned over and spilled all her giggles. Harry Jeter is over by the tennis courts passing out tomatoes from his 5,000-acre truck farm. He has been named the Trucker of the year in Fairfield County. Jake Stone, better known as Lebanon Lip , is the youngest man to win the world's heavy-weight boxing championship and has recently been matched with a new challenger, Oliver the Ox. sportsmanship for our school even if they weren't win- ning many games. Along with the fun of sock-hops, Latin banquets, club conventions and such—we man- aged to acquire enough learning to be elevated to the exaulted status of Juniors. Our Junior year was filled with achievement, and serious preparation for our most important final year. It is said that our Junior play was a tremendous suc- cess, and we believe it. For us Seventeenth Summer wifi always rate along with Romeo and Juliet and other famous plays. This year we had such fun enter- taining the Seniors with a Southern Plantation themed Junior-Senior Banquet and dance. The Southern Belles and chivalrous Gentleman of the occasion will always be a fond memory. Our Senior year has been a fitting climax to a mem- orable and fruitful high school history and by the time this is read it too will be history. Our Senior experi- ences such as the Senior Play, Junior-Senior Prom, Final Exams, and practice for graduating exercises are up- permost in our minds now and no doubt will long be remembered most vividly. So, with the memories of wonderful history to in- spire us, we look forward to the future with ambition and confidence — ambition to be worthy of our heri- tage — and confidence that, with the training we have received in morals as well as academics, we are pre- pared to meet any challenge of life. Billy Patrick, now known as the foremost designer of hand-made alligator bags and accessories, is seen speaking to this old friend and classmate, Dr. Robin Wilkes, who is now a famed plastic surgeon, specializing in Face repairs, Down by the Duck Pond, we see Skipper Sims who is now a TV star who can be seen Saturday night on that popular show Shock Theatre which is featuring the biggest shock of them all, Boykin Smith and his erie side-kick, James Jeffcoat. Dr. James Boyter, who is searching for the cure of that dreaded disease, Boyter Goiter, is seen talking to Miss Mary Burley, who is editor of that reknown newspaper, THE MONTICELLO MIRACLE. Mary fust completed a superb article on the foremost literary figure of our day, James Warmoth, who just published that Nobel Prize- winning book, YOU CAN TAKE IT WITH YOU IF YOU TRY. Robert L. Dove couldn't make if to our reunion this year, bul everybne knows that he is fulfilling his duties as chief gourmet at Greasy's Delicatessen in New York. We hear that Judy Sims and Becky Sanders are co-owners of the Borden's Ice Cream Company; and that Dubbie, after attaining his M.A. Degree at Furman, is now in Africa trying to put to some use what he learned. 133 CLASS PROPHECY Jerry Douglas and Jayne Stevenson are busy working on the 1984 World's Fair which will be held in that other city of light, Winnsboro, South Carolina. Beverly Brown, Melba Cail, Juanita Davis, and Barbara Miles are telephone operators for the Bell Telephone Company. They run their own business on the side, which they call, ''The Bell and Tell ' Millie Pope and Brenda Rabon are owners of the only florist shop in the United States which sells man-eating water lillies and mummified mums. Lynda Davis, Leona DeHart, and Beverly Freeman have devised a serum which if injected into a chicken makes deviled, scrambled, and poached eggs. They thought this up while driving through Winnsboro's dense traffic on a Saturday afternoon with their eyes closed. Craig Hinrichs, Patricia Dove, and Nancy Blair, after receiving their education, are now working with the Peace Corp in Nova Scotia. Darnell Branham and Patricia Groomes recently laid claim on another trophy for their tenth consecutive win of the Ladies' Hand Ball Tournament in Sandusky, Georgia. Frank Martin, a distinguished Senator, could not make it to our reunion because he is filibustering against the new idea of women presidents, which is a petition being pressed hard by Stella Boulware, Billie Faye Branham, and Josephine Beckham who are all likely candidates for the new office. As the smoke clears, we recognize first, second, and third-place winners of last year's Darlington-500 race. First was Fearless Faile, alias Bobby Faile, driving his fender-flopper Ford—second was Carburator Chapman, alias, Toby Chapman, flying in his canary- yellow Chevy; and last, but not least, placing third, was Catch-up Kennedy, alias William Kennedy, in his pepped-up Plymouth. Dwight Cooper, Richard Adams, and Johnny Glisson are joint- owners of the hottest restaurant on the Chattahoochee Beach. Ann Wiles, Jolene Mattox, and Carfse Ann Lyles are doing secreterial work for one of the largest law firms in New York headed by Vicki Boulware and Harold Baker. Larry Jo Douglas, who has just completed his term at Wofford, feels that he is too old to go into a special field of work so he has retired. Despite this—while at Wofford, Larry Jo achieved an unforgettable scholastic average. Alex Boulware, Gary Branham, John Powell, and Louis Fuller are now stationed at the Marine Base in Norfolk, Va. and specialize in guerilla warfare. Linda Farrow and Fitz Dove are still digging ditches around Erskine College in Due West. We have also learned that David Cooper is now writing a new style of poetry for that popular magazine, MR. ATLAS featuring Thomas Broome and his short stories. Larry Parker, Donald Smith, and Jennings Crouch are co-owners of the largest canning company since Del Monte. They call their can company P.S.C. (pluckem, shuckem, and cannom) which is now located in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant formerly known as Possum Hollow. Wade Macfie, now President of the Kleenex Tissue Company, is seen talking to Joe Sanders, who is the largest stockholder in the Sanders Sweet Shop. Annette Cogdill and Sally Martin were just seen walking up with their brand-new 1984 Collapsible convertibles in their pocket- books. Their husbands, Haskle Smith and Donnie Coleman, receive the credit for these marvelous autos. Lillian Bass and Wayne Wilson, we're happy to say, have estab- lished a chain of B W Drive-Ins which stretch all the way from Ridgeway to Winnsboro. We also hear that Captain BUI Wilkes of the Merchant Marines has recently been shipped to Japan where he is living up to his nickname Jap . Ellen McMaster and Anne Henderson are chairmen of that na- tional organization, the Quill and Scroll, which consists of those who have excelled in the field of journalism and who also show leader- ship and good citizenship. Charles Mincey and Brenda Lutz are partners in a dancing school specializing in the new dances—the Siberian Slouch, the Doodleltng and the Pinch. Cecil Tanner, the famous chiropractor, takes care of the injured students in his office, which is next door to their studio, Mary McMeekin, Shirley McFadden, and Frances Kay Mitchell are librarians at the Library of Congress in Washington. Sue Fortune, Janet Fellers, and Judy Wilkes are living in Winns- boro and are teaching physical education at Winnsboro High School under the direction of Ricky Thomas who is head coach, Shtrley Bennett is the greatest movie star since Greta Garbo and has recently made a new picture portraying the life of the great chemist, Sandy Strange. Francis Brewington and Nancy Nunn are- now living in Twin Pines, N.C. where Francis is a nurse and Nancy is a basketball coach. Rusty Robinson is now practicing dentistry in Greenbrier which is only one of his many offices. Carol Ann McLendon will be a little fate tonight while on her way over she wrecked her van and had to take a taxi. We see Marsha Hackle down by the duck pond demonstrating her Hackle Tackle on all the fish while talking to Berkeley Palmer, who has been noted for his bravery in action and his loyalty to the cause while serving as an active member of the Foreign Legion. Joyce Braziel, Barbara Drew, and Betty Smith are celebrating their fifteenth year as owners of large chain of supermarkets which are financially managed by Richard Johnson. Jennye Littleton, Mary Pat Nichols, and Patsy Short are working for The Bass and Thomas Typewriter Company. Jennye, Mary Pat, and Patsy can fix just about anything no matter what's wrong with it. Ben Branham and Bill Heron are operating one of the gigantic money-making machines in Washington at the Mint and seem to be very happy with their work. Patricia Branham is now the owner of a jewelry store in Columbia called Branham's Bracelet Shop. Erwin Renwick and Kitty Powers are now working at Disneyland where they are responsible for the odd sounds and special effects in the world of fantasy. Elizabeth Douglas is one of the few women left in politics but has made definite plans to change that after she becomes the First Lady or President. Byrd Larsen is now living in Philadelphia where she Is teach- ing ballet. Byrd has just recently invented several new steps such as doing a jump on your hands and not on your toes under water with the aid of assistant. This assistant is none other than Sam Edenfield, better known as Snorkle Sam. She has two out- standing members of her (troupe) Brenda Humphries and Tommy Peake who gave an outstanding performance in ballet this spring entitled The Dying Hummingbirds. But the night wears on and we realize that we must return to the present. Tomorrow, we will wonder how much of what we heard was fact or fantasy. How about it? 134 SENIOR DIRECTORY RICHARD E. S., many Seniors have become familiar with the members of the Discipline Committee; and, we hope, have profited through their association. This last year has presented many problems for the Seniors, and Miss Faucett has given valuable assistance in choosing col- leges and careers. To these people and the ones on the preceding page, we give our sincere thanks. DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE: Mr. Martin Ramsey, Mr. Marion Stevenson, Mr. J. W. Horne, Miss Mary Maner. 140 IN MEMORY of Winnsboro High’s first Homecoming Queen . . . first Miss Halcyon ... an outstanding student Miss Sara Wallace Brice June 5, 1943 March 31, 1964 ADVERTISEMENTS ... ADVERTISEMENTS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1964 UNITED STATES RUBBER COMPANY Serving Through Science Winnsboro Mills Where First Class People Make First Class Products Winnsboro, South Carolina PHILLIPS GRANITE COMPANY Rion, South Carolina To the Winnsboro High Graduates of 1964: The mere lapse of years is not life. To eat, to drink and sleep; to be exposed to darkness and the light; to pace around in the mill of habit and turn thought into an instrument of trade — this is not life. Knowledge, truths love, beauty, goodness, faith, alone can give vitality to the mechanism of existence. —James Martineau CAROLINA CLEANERS BARNETT KENNEDY VARIETY MERCHANDISE FANCY GROCERIES - MEATS FRESH VEGETABLES Ridgeway, South Carolina DETREX CUSTOM-CARE CLEANING Congress Street Winnsboro, South Carolina ECONOMY DRUG STORE Winnsboro, South Carolina EXPERT PRESCRIPTION COMPOUNDING Day Phone 225 Night Phone 8087 COLONIAL DRUG STORE DRUGS - COSMETICS FOUNTAIN SERVICE CATO'S WOMEN'S APPAREL Winnsboro, South Carolina Compliments of ISABELLE'S 109 West Liberty Street Winnsboro, South Carolina DOVE'S GULF Winnsboro, South Carolina LADD'S GROCERY Winnsboro, South Carolina FRAZIER-COLEMAN MOTORS, INC.
