In the years to come, while turning through these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, tears, and hopes of the past year, we will be happy, knowing that we have succeeded in bringing these reminiscent thoughts to you as a part of the most wonderful time in all our lives. We also wish to express the satisfaction and enjoyment we have experienced in pre- paring this treasure of memories for you; and we hope it gives you as much pleasure in reading it. We have chosen the Seniors” as our theme, and leave them this last thoughtful bit of advice to remember . . . As one door closes, another opens. M Looking over these past few months, we have endeavored to select some of the bright spots that stand out in our minds as impor- tant events at Winnsboro High School. Now, with these thoughts in mind, we present to you . . . your 1962 HALCYON. The 1962 HALCYON Staff EDITOR 2 ' am .. -io J (X OA fcn l) 6L.AA_ . . . is for the Senior Class of 1962 . . . the theme of our yearbook. Come with us through these pages, as we share a few moments with the Seniors in their daily lives . . . as they live it day by day . . . and, as we go, exploring the priceless little moments that bring us closer to each other . . . and relive the memories that have gathered through these last fleet- ing months of that unforgettable time of life . . . those ’’high school days” . , . 4 r is for Each new day , . . that brings fresh and cherished experiences for every one of us, to store away and later recall as dear memories . . . each day - which Seniors face with mixed emotions, . . anticipation and excitement that come with visions of the future, . . . and sadness, when each day takes them nearer the day when they must leave these traveled halls and make a life in the world. A is for Numerous classes . . . that are the essence of a school . . where we each should strive to learn more, ... to develop our minds in order that some knowledge might take root and prepare us for the future ... so that we may have some inkling of life as it should be lived , , , and we may remember to treat our fellow men as brothers. 5 I-J h, is for Intelligence . , , which increases with each bit of knowledge that we absorb . . . and awakens in us the desire for the better, higher things in life . „ , lifting us to lofty ideals and ambitions . . . inspiring us to work, to reach the goals that we have set for ourselves . . . It is the fountain from which flows the dreams and hopes that fill our lives, and will ultimately complete them. is for Originality , . . that wonderful something through which some of us lighten the busy and often dreary days of others by bringing humor and laughter into them . . . relieving the tensions of tiresome routines of study . , . and, for a while, allows our minds to wander from the tedious, burdensome problems of learning ... to the lighter, freer side of life. 6 is for Recreation . . . whether in or outside of school, providing a time, place, and opportunity for a general get-together . . . when we get to know each other, . . . making new acquaintances and strengthening the old ones . . . forming ties never to be broken . and sharing the fun and pleasure that the Seniors take part in for the last time. is for Sports . . . popular activities, filled with excitement and enthusiasm, . . . which provide another opportunity to promote togetherness among the students ... to increase school spirit, winning or losing, . . , and raise more interest in the affairs of the school as a whole ... to demon- strate the importance of teamwork, and teach us the meaning of good sportsmanship . . . that we may ever remember it in our years to come. 7 8 Organizations page 71 Underclassmen page 43 page 19 Table of Administration and Faculty page 11 Seniors Contents Features page 117 Advertisements page 137 Sports page 93 9 V ' i? Peppermin May 4 The Fabulous Swordsmen! Senior Lounge 1962 Straight from the Peppermint Lounge . . , our own Peppermint Twisters! 5 the Peppermint Lounge! Even teachers like to twist! The Grand March Prophecy The year is 1972. We take you now to the 1962 gradu- ating class's reunion. It is at the country club, and all of the members have gathered to see each other after ten years. They seem to be enjoying themselves, exchanging news, and catching up on the changes that have taken place since 1962, ten years ago. Let's join them and find out for ourselves. As we approach the group, we see something weird, but it's only Butch Varnadore who has just returned from Green- wich Village and hasn't gotten rid of his beard yet. Moving on, we hear some of the conversation going on between Carolyn Smith, Judy Rhinehardt, and their hus- bands. Judy can be seen in many of our local Town The- ater presentations, and Carolyn finds time from her role of housewife to participate in another career, that of phar- macist in a local drug store. Cindy Hiott has made a name for herself, following the Hiott family tradition. We find she has made a contribu- tion to humanity in the science field, discovering a cure for hepatitis and several other infectious diseases. Pinkey Dickey, another honor graduate of 1962, is now professor of French at a small private school in Massachu- setts. Mary Barkley Turner is headmistress at this same school for girls, and we find among the faculty members, Marcia Hite, head of the Math Department. Walking over to another group, we hear an Italian ac- cent and recognize a classmate, Pierina Pielich, who has flown to South Carolina from New York especially for this reunion. She is one of the interpreters in the United Na- tions, fluently speaking eight native tongues. Talking to her is the famous doctor-turned-politician, Doug Buchanan from Washington, and they are undoubtedly discussing his party's platform as he will soon be running for Congress, Margaret Smith, now a librarian, informs us that the new book we've been hearing so much about was written by our own classmate, Linda Martin. Her recently pub- lished best seller is entitled THE STUDENT'S GUIDE ON HOW TO CUT STUDY HALLS. Larry Cotton is now the Dean of Students at Tulane, and his major project at the moment, is trying to outlaw drink- ing among the students. John McMaster now designs shoe laces, for Bass Wee- juns. Another of our classmates, Paul Dove is now presi- dent of General Motors; however; he still can be seen driv- ing his red and white Ford convertible. Henry Gerald and Tommy Hudson are members of a professional ball club, and Keith Brewington, the cele- brated sports caster, has filled us in on their latest batting averages. Paul Grieb and John Taylor, winners of recent golf tournaments, have taken this opportunity to practice their favorite pastime here at the country club. It really brings back memories of high school days seeing Paul and John teeing off again. Harvey Dickerson, the principal of Winnsboro High School, is discussing the problem of students blocking the hallways, with the local Board. Board members Joe War- moth, Steve Hilton, and Derrill Mixon agree with him that benches with gold-plated seats for couples going stead - gifts of the Class of 1965, only made matters worse. Becky Motes, who has her own radio program, MOO- MOO WITH MOTES, seems to be having an interesting coi versation with the sponsor, Sammy Clowney, who owns a large dairy. Joyce Coleman is the coach and star for a traveling group of girl basketball players. She and Margie Beckharr will soon open the newest of their long chain of health studios. Billy Castles enjoyed his trip to Europe so much that he decided to go back. He's now conducting guided tours abroad. He frequently sees John Carter at their meeting place in Paris at the Folies Begere. John, after studying art at the Sorbonne, decided to remain in Paris and is a full-fledged artist. Wayne Summers, who for many years studied chemistry has given up in that field, and is making half-horse power engines for a large bulldozer company. Glenda Bolen, Carolyn Clyburn, Patsy Shaw, Ann Braziel, and Bobbie Lemmon are secretaries for executive1 in New York, Chicago, and Texas. Another graduate of '62 who has climbed the ladder of success is Billy Patrick, who is now president of Erskine College. Billy has recently started a scholarship fund for ex-Beta Club members, and, we hear, he has received quite a few anonymous contributions. Georgia Peay is President Patrick's secretary. 126 Verna Reynolds, Gloria Jean Douglas, and Beverly Powers run a beauty shoppe, and Brenda Stevenson models their new hair styles. Brenda has a French Twist today and we can all remember when it was the rage at Winnsboro High School. Sandra Evans and Joyce Crawford have their own supper club which is called the Hunter Club. Mary Jo Turner is the official hostess. Bobby Fuller is running the Fuller Bull Company which raises prize bulls. Jerome Mincey has invented a rodent repellent which is selling like hot cakes. Julia Margaret Harden and Brenda Weed who are nurses at Columbia Hospital have recently been to New York where they heard the Branham Brothers, a singing group composed of Faye and Don Branham, accompanied on the guitar by Margaret Crumpton. Their renditions of folk songs are nationally known. While they were in New York, they happened to see Patricia Rutland and Martha Steven- son, who also work at Columbia Hospital. We cannot exclude from the circle of famous '62 grad- uates, Kenneth Davenport, who wrote a book on a subject near and dear to Mr. Gale's heart, THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE HORSE LAUGH 1 Spencer Hewitt and Donald Walker, who are married to graduates of Winnsboro High School, now run a go-cart company, which is very popular with the local natives. Larry Waters has been a valuable aid to the U. S. Rub- ber Company, having invented several new contraptions for producing a new fiber, and Butch Collins is employed by the town of Winnsboro; he is in charge of a fleet of mos- quito -spraying trucks. Kay Bass and Alvin Raley are partners in a dancing school which specializes in the new dances - the Jelly Roll, the Honey Pot, and the Itch. John Henry Lewis, the fa- mous chiropractor, takes care of their injured students in his office, which is next door to their studio. President Nixon has appointed Buddy Turkett and Jerry Viles to be the first men to go to Venus. Now that weTve already reached the moon and have regular flights, Robbie Walker is a moqn flight stewardess and two moon pilots are Ben Bass and Edward Blair. Bucky Ellison and Jamie Frazier, Marine drill instructors, couldn't make it to the reunion because they are both fac- ing court martial for drilling troops in the marsh at Parris Island, Alona Beckham, Helen Collins, and Dot Floyd are raising kangaroos on their farm in Australia, and Ted Nichols is exporting boomerangs that don't come back. Billy Clowney, Jerry Stevenson, and Bobby Johnson are working on a banana boat to South America. Walter Rut- land happens to be chaplain on this vessel. Dale Holmes is taking the part of the hero in the still very popular Ben Casey T. V. series. There are others in our class whose names are in the spotlights on Broadway - Dan- ny Ballentine, starring in the lead role of MACBETH and Elaine Dove is his accomplice in this classic drama. Ruth Boone, Libby D. Thigpen, Pat D. Swygert, Mary Frances Mattox, and Jane Pearson are housewives who have formed a kindergarten. With the help of Barbara Jean Smith, Jeannie Ramsey, and Gale Haygood, they are forming a special play school upon request of those Seniors who didn't want to leave high school. Marie Starnes runs an advice column in the local NEWS AND HERALD entitled, Ask Marie. ” Reginald McPhatter is minister of a small church. Anne Brown is the first woman from Fairfield County in the House of Representatives. Carolyn Neely is in the WACS and has returned from Japan to be with us. Johnnie Ray Wilson is also back from Japan and is teaching classes of Judo to local students. Diane Stokes, a famous lady architect, recently de- signed the brand new Winnsboro High School Auditorium, which is fine, but not quite big enough. Theron Wilson is driving a Scenic Tour Bus which spe- cializes in musical tours. The music is furnished by Theronrs bass solos. All of the refreshment for this reunion came from the Wilson Bakery in Winnsboro, owned and operated by Belvia and Eliza Wilson. Although we hate to leave this reunion of friends and classmates, we must return to our respective jobs. Sam has to get back to his insurance business, and 1 must return to my job in South Africa as a member of the Peace Corps. There have been many changes made since our Class of 1962 was together, and the future holds many more. As life goes on, changes are made, and we can't help won- dering how we will appear ten years from now - that is, in 1982. Last Will and Testament We, the graduating class of Winnsboro High School, in the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred Sixty-Two, being in a state of outstanding physical condition and having the quality of superior intelligence, do hereby declare this to be our Last Will and Testament. Tonight our thoughts drift backward To the days when we began, The long and tedious struggle That is coming to an end. And now we say in leaving A word straight from each heart: Our thanks to you, our teachers, For doing well your part. We thank also our parents, For love and tender care, For wisdom and for guidance None can with them compare. We look into the future With hopes and ideals high, To make our world a better place With effort we shall try. The year is drawing to a close; Our carefree days are through, And though we go our separate ways, Our hearts remain with you. CLASS POET Cindy Hiott 130 CLASS PROPHETS Susie Lyles, Sam Arnette Class Night May 25, 1962 Graduation - . . the climax of five wonderful high school years. Members of the class of '62 entered the eighth grade at various schools in Fairfield County - Blackstock, Greenbrier, Jenkinsville, Monticello, Mount Zion, and Ridgeway. Little did we dream then that we would unite at Winnsboro High School in our Junior year. As eighth graders, we were excited, yet somewhat afraid, of the new- ness of high school life. Eighth grade initiation was a time we’ll never forget. It made us wonder whether we’d EVER be as grown-up as the Sen- iors. In the Ninth Grade, our fears were gone; we really belonged. In fact, we felt quite superior to the lowly sub-freshmen. Our Sophomore Year meant more interest in extracurricular activities. Growing up no longer seemed an impossible goal. Our Junior Year was one of the most memorable of our lives. We came to our new alma mater and united with classmates who have become close friends. We helped to organize various clubs and our two publications, THE HALCYON and Consolidated Comments, We worked hard to carry out our Junior-Sen- ior theme, City of Lights, ” and to present the Junior Class Play, Aunt Abby Answers An Ad, This, our Senior Year, has been equally memorable. Our play, If a Man Answers, was a successful presentation. This spring we were entertained by the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Prom, The Peppermint Lounge. ” We are proud that one of our Senior sponsors. Miss Kathleen Lemmon, wrote the Winnsboro High Alma Mater during our Senior Year. As Seniors we have had responsibilities as well as privileges, and we are pleased that several of our classmates have won scholarships to various colleges and that many of our class members have shown indi cations of promising futures by their academic records. Yes, our high school days are over, and the time has come for the Class of 1962 to enter the adult world. We leave our alma mater feeling deeply grateful to those who have helped during these high school years to prepare us for that world. Collins has led us successfully through the first difficult days, and has paved the way for future harmony and congeniality among the administration, faculty, and students. Your work and help to us all, Mr. Collins, has been greatly appreciated by everyone. We will miss your quiet, but strong leadership, your understanding, and your unfailing patience with our problems and concerns. We are certain that wherever you go - you will be welcomed, and whatever you undertake - will be a success. We wish you good fortune and continued happiness in the future I MR. PURVIS W.
