The first activity of the council was to send representatives to the State Student Council Convention. Mrs. Patsy McLeod, co-sponsor of the club, Glen Taylor, Larry Cotton, and Dub Davis attended this convention where Dub Davis led a discussion group. During the year the club sponsored various activities; a pennant sale, eighth grade initiation, a bake sale, and a talent show. The District V Rally was successfully held at W. H. S. Dub Davis, District Chairman, presided. Approximately two-hundred delegates from various schools attended. Believing that all work and no play makes for dullness, the Student Council held a banquet for all of its members. Plans were made to leave the council in the hands of capable leaders. Class Poem To our former schools we said good-by And quickly loved new Winnsboro High. As the first senior class, we led the way That future seniors would follow some day. The eighth of June was the chosen date. For the first senior class to graduate. Now to strive for higher education We leave our school with deep appreciation. Winnsboro High in only one year, Gave us memories to treasure so dear. Some of joy and some of sorrow Yielding sublimely our hope for tomorrow. This year we leave with grateful heart Though happy and sad with reluctance depart. And eagerly await the years to come The proud, happy Class of Sixty-One. MARY JEAN COLLINS Class Poet Class History Our day of graduation has finally come after five years of hard work. It seems as only yesterday that we entered high school as frightened sub-freshmen, who were very proud to consider ourselves as high school students. After our initiation, the high point of our sub-freshman year, we felt as if we really were a part of high school. Our freshman year many of us joined various clubs, participated in sports, and were active in many other school activities. Our sophomore year seemed to us as the point of no return, as we had completed two years of high school and had only two years remaining. Our junior year swept by very rapidly as we practiced for our Junior Plays. The high point of this year was our planning the Junior-Senior Proms, Several honors came to our class members this year as several girls were chosen to attend Girls State and several boys were chosen to attend Boys' State. This representation was on a county wide basis. Our high school days were begun at Ridgeway, Blackstock, Monticello, Jenkinsville, Greenbrier, and Mount Zion. Little did we know that in our senior year we would all be united in one beautiful school. This year has indeed been the happiest of our high school days. We worked hard practicing for our Senior Play, ASK ANY GIRL. In the spring we were honored by the junior class at our Junior-Senior Prom, which had the theme, THE CITY OF LIGHTS. Now it is hard to believe that we are seniors, that next year we will attend various colleges, and our high school graduation will be history, also. We will always cherish the memories of our high school days. DUB DAVIS Historian Last Will and Testament We, the Class of 1961, being of unsound body and insane mind, do will and bequeath our physical and mental posses- sions to the members of the rising Senior Class. As a collective body, we would like to will the following to the rising Senior Class: Our numerous tracks through the halls, and our morning meeting places near the lockers. As individuals we would like to will the following: BONNIE SHORT and ESTHER PEACH will their shorthand ability to Carolyn Clyburn and Margaret Crumpton. RAY FULLER leaves his Elvis-like haircut to Edward Blair. MARY JEAN COLLINS bequeaths her creative ability to Judy Marsh and Oscar Collins. MARY COLEMAN leaves for West Point. JIMMY RAY DOUGLAS leaves his love for physics to Harvey Dickerson and Sammy Clowney. BETTY ANNE STONE and JUDY CHAPPELL will their places on the Honor Roll to Spencer Hewitt and Sam Arnette. WALLACE BOULWARE and JOE HENNESSEE leave their shyness of manner to Robert Branham and Joyce Coleman. VIRGIL RABON, FURMAN WHITE, and LARRY MURPHY bequeath their buses to Jerry Stevenson, and Tommy Hudson, hoping they will take good care of them. CHARLES MONTGOMERY, the Maynard G. FLOR- RIE BLUME bequeaths her typing ability to Patricia Rutland and Alona Beckham. BILLY REID bequeaths his ability to get along with Mr, Gale to Larry Cotton. JOEL RAY VELASCO leaves his love for getting dismissed to Carolyn Neely. KITTY STEWART doesn't leave anything; she wants to take it with her. Signed, sealed and delivered by Witnessed by KITTY STEWART and BILLY REID CATHY LEVINER and TONY LONG 116 Prophets; LINDSAY LEVINER and SARA WALLACE BRICE Prophecy At last we are numbered among the prophets, and mindful of the fate that befalls false ones, we realize that our proph- esy must be true. So we place the crystal globe before us and record faithfully what we see there. As I gaze into the crystal, the year 1971 rolls around - the shadows deepen and take form, and the Winnsboro High School trigonometry classroom appears. Standing before the door is BOBBY PICKLING with a number of books in his hand. The vision fades so quickly that I do not learn whether he is teaching or looking forward to graduation at this late date. Next appears the physics classroom which is unusually quiet. Ah yes! The reason for this silence is that BRUCE BAKER is no longer a member of the class. Suddenly the crystal darkens and then a new scene appears. It is New York City and here I see PAM FELLERS and BETTY ANN STONE are howling successes in the Metropolitan Opera. Also, DON LEWIS has the uplifting position of elevator boy in a large department store. JOEL VELASCO and JUNE MEADOWS are the stars in a current Broadway pro- duction, however I must mention that JIMMY RAY DOUGLAS is the director this time. GENE KELLY, who has always had a leaning toward the higher morals and better things in life, is now an officer in the Salvation Army. Very rapidly these other pictures form before my eyes: DUB DAVIS has just finished writing a book entitled HOW TO WIN IN LOVE AND WAR. If he wrote it from personal experience, the title should have been HOW TO BECOME a CHEERFUL LOSER. CHARLES MONTGOMERY has achieved his life ambition to become a classical hobo, and FURMAN WHITE has recently been elected mayor of Cornwall. SUSAN KELLY and LANNY RAY GUNTER have taken over the Arthur Murray school of dancing and now maintain a respectable and successful business. JUDY THOMAS and SANDRA SIKES also operate a dancing school next door. BARBARA WEBB is a First Aid worker in the same building taking care of JUDY and SANDRAāS fractured and dislocated dancing pupils. I notice that PAT JACKSON has become head football coach at Clemson College. She was recently quoted in a well- known newspaper as saying, I can teach anyone my brand of football. DAVID GUSTAFSON is on an evangelistic tour of the country. Presently he has his tabernacle set up next to a pool room in Las Vegas. WESLEY BAKER, better known as the cookie snatcher, now operates his own bakery and BOBBY CLARKSON, who is the fat man in a big time circus, is his best customer. EUGENE REYNOLDS is now president of the Greyhound Bus Corporation. The fact that his buses are kept orderly and are always on time does not give us an accurate account of his high school record. Of course, you can readily guess that his competent rival must be SPENCER SPIGNER, head of the Trailways Bus Line. STAN GALE is the owner of a mortuary which gives Green Stamps and he will have a rushing business as long as JIMMY McLENDON and LINDSAY LEVINER are successful doctors. KITTY STEWART and JEAN BASS are operating a private school outside the city limits of Winnsboro. They are teach- ing high school students how to give the horselaugh in Mr. Gale's room without getting caught. CAROLYN GLADDEN is the private secretary of a successful young businessman, who just by mere chance, of course, happens to be JOHNNY STARNES. What is this I see? Why itās TED STRANGE performing an experiment in the laboratory of a large chemical firm. I can tell by the worried look on her face that something is not right. Look out! ! There goes an explosion and I can see Ted spinning through outer space. Thinking she is the first person in space, you can imagine her surprise when she sees EARLE POPE taking off from the moon headed for Venus to take JOYCE BLACK and WEDA JO HOUZE for a cruise around Earth in his white space ship. As she recovers from her fall, she is greeted by General JOHN JOHNSON and MARY COLEMAN who are expecting JOYCE LEMMON and SONJIA PORTER for dinner. With them will be two pointed-head moon men, LARRY MURPHY and E. M. HUNTER, whom they have taken a liking to. The latest news is that JOHNNIE WILSONāS Moon Bums football team defeated JERRY LEE SMITHāS Moon Beams in a championship game today. MARY JIM GUNTER and PEGGY GOODWIN were on the sidelines leading a cheering section of hundreds of little green people. ROY DAVIS and TOMMY BUSBEE have gone on a safari to hunt horned monsters to shoot down with their new ray guns. College professor WAYNE SHULL and teacher BETSY THOMPSON are quite busy trying to show JOHNNY SMITH how to put a square peg in a round hole. CAROL KIMBLE is standing by explaining to MARY HELEN GLADDEN that she is con- fident of just how it is done. BENNIE McMANUS is operating a space service station. DAVID GERALD is helping him keep the rocket fuel flowing and LOUIS CHRISTIE is chief mechanic. I f 7 CHARLES LEGRAND is the franchised dealer for Satellite Put-Puts. BONNIE SHORT and KAYE BLACKWELL are sales ladies to give you a demonstration ride in your new Put-Put. Right next to this establishment is an assembly line for red Impalas. I see HARRIET McMASTER is production manager, having had much experience with this type of automobile during high school. JUDY CHAPPELL and JOHNNIE CARROLL own a sweetās shop on the planet Mars; selling only Mars candy bars, moon pies, and sundrops. I see a sign hanging in front of a little shop across the Milky Way. Hats for every occasion - ladies of distinction buy their space helmets at MARY JO BURLEYāS Helmet Shoppe. Next I see SARA WALLACE BRICE, who refused a career as an actress to become a psychology teacher. FLORRIE BLUME, BOBBY BROWN, and LINDA RAMSEY are sitting in on her classes trying to catch something they may have missed at dear, ole Winnsboro High. Big businessmen, RAY FULLER and WAYNE McLENDON, seem to be showing quite a profit in their manufacture of sky hooks!! Singing sensation of the Space Age is The Peake Boys, HERMAN and BOBBY with their hit recording of Thereās an Earth Out Tonight. They said it couldn't be done, but here are WILLIE LONG and REGGIE BYRD showing VIRGIL RABON and JOHNNY RAGS- DALE how to dribble a meteor. At Mars Hill University, the girls debating team, composed of ESTHER PEACH, SANDRA McLENDON, LINDA PERRY, and BETTY JO PLYLER, is thrashing out the question, Are Mars' two-headed men more intelligent than Earth's one- headed men? This, of course, puts judges JERRY SPENCER SMITH and JOE HENNESSEE on the spot. CAROL GUNTER, AUDINE BOONE, and BARBARA BROWN are sitting patiently out in space waiting for their ships to come in. And what do you think JOHNNIE BRIGMAN and BARNEY BAGGOTT are doing in outer space? Nothing!! I But I see a group of girls, KAY BEAM, MARY JEAN COLLINS, CHRISTINE LEITNER, ANNE LITTLETON, MIRIAM PEAY, and GAY TIMMS have formed a jiving sextet, conducted by WALLACE BOULWARE. Bringing us back to Earth again, our crystal ball cites a few more scenes for us, but we must hurry for the fog is closing in. HAROLD BRYANT, now an excellent vocalist, recently won first place in a hog calling contest at the State Fair. His prize was an entire fishing outfit with all equipment. Everyone knows HAROLD doesn't like to fish, so what is he going to do? It seems as if those letters that CAROL ANN MORRIS, DARLENE PORTER, and ANN WILLIAMS were always writing in high school must have paid off. All are happily married. JIMMY ROBINSON and BUDDY McFADDEN have been shipwrecked on a South Sea Island inhabited by beautiful native girls and all they can say is Bali Hāai.f' EMILY CASTLES and ANDREA DOVE are now advertising agents for a large cigarette industry. It appears that both are excellent saleswomen. Working as a typist in the main office of a large insurance agency, MARY LYNN BROWN states that she has at last thrown out the touch system, which she had never mastered, and is now using with fair success the reliable old hunt and peck.- NELLIE WILSON, who has recently composed a slang dictionary and completed the rule book on How to Play Twenty- one, is to be married next week to her long, lost soldier boy returning from Russia. BILLY REID is now at the head of Fairview and also runs a column in a local paper entitled Alcholics Anonymous. JEANNE STEWART'S contribution to humanity is a self-guiding automobile. She says that her reason for inventing this was that she simply couldn't stand to watch the road while driving. The model wife of a nearby town, JOETTE SPIRES, has nothing to offer but this helpful bit of housewifely advice; Don't sweep your house; let a cyclone pass through it. If you can't get a cyclone, just whistle up a storm. Same results guaranteed. GLORIA WHITE is living on a turkey farm with a long-time favorite friend who is now her husband. JOE ALBERT and MITCHELL CARTER, now thriving dairymen who furnish schools with milk, inform us that they have solved the dairyman's problem of how to produce the most milk at the least expense. Their solution is simply to treat the cows with a little of Beer Barrel Polka. ā The crystal becomes clear and the vision fades - the year 1961 is still with us. So the jesters push the crystal aside with the sincere hope that the class of '61 will find the past years but stepping stones to higher things. 118 Graduation Exercises 8:15! 8:30!
