Lisa Canerday drew the traditional run- through signs of every game to symbolize the way the Tigers ran-through opponents. WSH CRUSHES COUGARS 60-O. The Tiger offense looked great rolling up 60 points, but the team was prouder of the goose egg that the defense registered for Grant. With this victo- ry, WSHS improved its record to 2-1. Senior A Spotlight CHESTER BRINSON- f'Chester had to make a lot of changes this year. He accomplished great things by mastering each . ..... osition he was chan ed ,, , to. lCrawfordI ' KEVIN COLLINS- Kevin had a great attitude about football. He was always serious and businesslike on the field, and a fun guy and a good friend off the field.', tMillsJ SAMPSON COLLINS- He is a changed person. His attitude has changed for the better as he got better. He helped calm the team down when we needed it. fDurhaml KENNY CRAWFORD- Even though Kenn wasn't as big as some of us others, he always worked hard at his position and wasn't afraid to go up against anyone. lGriggI CALVIN DURHAM- This was Calvin's first year with the varsity. Even though he didn't have as much experience as some of us others, he still made big contributions. fWilliamsl 1 TIGERS TROUNCE TIOGA 47-14. For the 2nd straight year the Tigers beat AAA Tioga. After a slow start, WSHS Roared to a 34-O halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, it was stretched to 47-0 by the reinforcements, Tioga's only scores came with less than three minutes left in the game, Football 15

White 8 50 ' 23 1982 State Champs TIGERS EDGE PINEVILLE 39-38. WSHS slipped by the Rebels in a wild game in which both teams combined for over 800 yds. of total offense. The Tigers drove 64 yds. for a touch- down to come from behind in the 4th quarter to win. But the defense had to stop Pineville twice in the last 6 minutes to preserve the win. 14 Football STATE CHAMPS' Tigers Number 1 In AA The first football state championship for WSHS was the final achievement in a full year of work for 40 young men and coaches. When the Tigers were eliminated in the semifinal around of the 81 playoffs prep- arations were begun for the 82 year. A weight-lifting program was begun for the players' coaches sought improvement by sessions of spring training were held' running and lifting continued during the summer' and the Tigers practiced twice a day prior to school opening. The team was beginning to jell and the coaches were expecting great things. However the season started with a disappointing loss to Neville causing many to doubt the team s ability. But the Tigers took it as a lesson in humility. As the season progressed the team began to regain its confidence. Winnfield rolled over its district 3-AA op- ponents winning by an average of 56 points. For the second straight year the district championship came to WSI-IS. The Tigers had the most difficult road to the finals in the playoff bracket facing Springhill Ferriday and E.D. White who Finally after eliminating these teams the Tigers made the well earned trip to the DOME. Their opponent was John Curtis the 3-time defending state champions. Curtis was the proud owner of a 46 game winning streak against AA opponents. But when it was all over the score was 23-14 and the Winnfield Tigers were on top of the world as the STATE AA CHAMPS. All the work had finally paid off. I studying collegiate football programsg two were ranked in the top ten in the state. NEVILLE STUNS WINNFIELD 35-0. The Tigers were disappointed in their sea- son opener against AAAA powerhouse Ne- ville. The game started out close, with a 0-0 tie after the first quarter, but Neville broke loose in the second quarter to start a 35 point romp. WT?

WSI-IS SQUEAKS PAST PARKWAY 25-23. WSHS is now 4-1 after its win over AAAA Parkway. After giving up a field goal, the Tigers made it 7-3 and never fell behind again. The Panthers came close in the 2nd half, scoring twice to come within 2 points, but the defense held tough to win. Senior Spotlight JESS GRIGG- I've played football beside Jess for years and I know he's a great . player. He overcame a lot of pain to play sometimes, but he was there when it counted. lI'luckabyl JAY I-IUCKABY- Jay was the heart of our defensive front line. He was someone you could count on not only play after play, but year after year. IWilliamsl DOUG LAWRENCE- It took Doug a while to come around this year, but when he did get everything together he meant a lot to our team and really helped us a lot. INelsoni MARCEL MILLS- Marcel was a good, steady performer. We knew we could always count on Marcel to go out on Friday night and put out his best effort.'l IBrinsoni BENNY MITCHELL- i'Benny was always a threat to break a game wide-open. Whenever he had the ball he was dangerous from anywhere on the field. lMylesi ww ww WSI-IS BOMBS JENA 78-16. WSHS easily eat its 4th AAA team in the final tune-up for the district schedule. The offense looked good as it tied a school record with 78 points. But the Tigers were also proud of their defense which forced 7 interceptions. WSHS is now 5-1 enter- ing district. 16 Football Huckaby and Riggs crush an unlucky ball- carrier. Johnny Williams - deep snap-artist. Coach Moreau ran the show from the sideline. The Leatherneck secondary didn't allow much -room for this receiver.
