Although school may seem to be a full-time oc- cupation to many students, anyone who stops to really consider it knows that it is only a preparation for the outside world . This is the area that the counseling office is virtally concerned with. Of course, the counselors are concerned with scheduling and all the other bureaucratic hassles of today's educational process, but the forwarding of transcripts and other career planning services make up a major portion of the counselors' duties. The counselors are the people with all the answers. If you want to know about colleges, vocational schools, summer jobs, or the draft, the counselors are the people to talk to. The counselors are always glad to see students, when they have the time. Ap- pointments are almost a necessity. The center block of photographs pictures the counseling staff. At any one time, approximately 750!0 of the students are enrolled in English courses. . The Griffin Rites, Big W's 'own newspaper has a readership that goes far beyond' the student body and the faculty. The fall and spring plays that are produced by the drama department brought many persons into Winnetonka. And the speech and debate faction did much to further the C-riffins reputa- tion for fine performances in interscholastic competition. All these things brought attention to the fact that there is more to schooling, especially at Winnetonka, than the three R's. The Griffins dropped their first meet with Raytown South and William Chrisman finishing third in a field of three. Having discovered what it was like to lose the harriers bounced back with two clear victories. Then came a series of good performances: seventh in a field of fifteen at the Raytown South Invitational, first over Belton, 'Center Raytownp second at the Northland Invitational, and sixth at Ruskin Invitational. Big W finished third in conference behind Raytow South and Oak Park. Then, at the district meet, the Griffi finished only fourth, behind Fort Osage, Oak Park, an William Chrisman. Here the road ended for Winnetonka as team. Only senior Rick Balagna qualified for the regional where he continued on to state. Balagna also set a new sch record of 10:01. iClockwisef-from topl Kent Ballanger's face illustrates the determination necessary in country. No longer could ac- cusations be thrown as to the stealing of players from other schools. These were the original Griffins, and they were out to make a name for themselves. The stage was set. Big W's squad had been prac- ticing since early August and a pleasant picture had begun to develop. Winnetonkahad a squad with an enormous amount of experience. Did the Griffins have depth, though? Well, if still waters run deep, the Griffins' steam was absolutely motionless. And so it was with eager anticipation that the Winnetonka football squad sallied forth against their first foe, the Park Hill Trojans. tClockwise from rightl Eldon Corbet consults with a referee as he and Greg Hastings walk into the field of battle. Against Raytown, the Griffins held their op ponents to only seven points and scored more points than against Park Hill, i.e. 29 of them. 29-7! Where, if anywhere, was there a team that could stop the constantly improving Griffins? The team was certainly not the Ruskin Eagles, the Griffins next victim. The Winnetonka Machine crushed Ruskin by a score of 50-14. And seven of Ruskin's points were on a recovered fumble, a fluke, certainly not earned. Only one of the Griffins' touchdowns was via the air, testifying to Big W's running game. Some persons would not predict anything this early in the season, but those people were not the sports writers of the Kansas City Star. The addition of the baseball crown to the wrestling title made Big W the most successful conference school in the area of athletics. Not bad for a three year old school. The Griffins took first place after a close race in a rain shortened -season. Only the time span of the season was shortened, though, not the schedule. Mother Nature forced the postponement of many games throughout the season. As a result, the Winnetonka squad often found itself playing games on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon. A grueling schedule, but one the Griffins handled well. tClockwise from upper rightl Cliff Pummill gets a hit and aids the Griffins in defeating another opponent. Gary Patton attempts to steal second base against Oak Park. Holding on to his helmet, Chris Patton scrambles back to first base. Glen Smith, one of the most successful Griffin pitchers, winds up to throw. Eldon Gorbet attempts to stop a Hornet runner. ,M ' .p,...,4 , ' 'Af ff I 0 .., ., ff f ,,,, . 4 ,ff ,P ' . fffsx.. , .' Yet, when one closes the door to his school days, it will remain shut. Except for those fleeting flashes, when one remembers that certain little instance. The Odyssey is a book created to help one recall those important events of the past. It also shows a part of our lives that will never be again. The thing one must remember when he closes the door to the past, is that there will always be another door to open. A door to the future. Reaching for that door is not so unattainable as it seems. Each one of us felt that reaching the door to our Senior year would never come to be. Yet, look at us now we the class of nineteen hundred and seventy-three have closed that door. We sometimes think that the journey from the past to the future is a bleak time. But, look on the other side of that door and one can see the sunshine. Not a bleak world at all. Each student of Winnetonka will pass through the door to the future. He and he alone will make for himself what his life will be. The Faculty and Administration of Winnetonka High School has tried to prepare each of us for the step through that door. MELANIE CHAPMAN EDITOR-IN-CH IEF '1 5 I 5 I 1 1 3 -4 ' 9 Eh 1 1 1 L.. 5 4
