football grjfin teamwork produces 8-2 reeora' for first season I felt that it was a good start for a new school, and next year will be a new challenge. The biggest secret to our success was our team balance, remarked Mr. Dan Stanley, head football coach, about the first football season for the new Winnetonka High School. Assistant coaches were Mr. Mel Wieland, Mr. Don Talbott, Mr. Benny Cain, Mr. Carroll Townsend, and Mr. Jim Shepherd. Student managers were Brad Meyer, Tom Chapin, and George Rocha. Since only sophomores were enrolled at WHS, opposition was against sophomore teams. About 80 boys reported for practice in August. Home games were played on North Kansas City High School's field. The Vikings of Shawnee Mission West came across the river for the first encounter and downed Winnetonka, 22-20. But the Griffins bounced back the next week and upset the Ray- town South Cardinals, 8-6. gryffins take trojans In the first game away from home, the squad traveled to Park Hill and brought home a decisive 55-16 victory over the Trojans. The Celtics of O'Hara High School were next to come under the spell of Winnetonka, and were dealt a 20-8 loss at the Northtown stadium. The next week the game was played at Leels Summit where a 19-6 win was posted by the Griffins. Coach Stanley's team smashed the Shawnee Mission East Lancers next, 23-6, at home and the winning ways of the team continued. How- ever, the Ruskin Eagles spelled trouble the next week, and Winnetonka was dealt its sec- ond loss of the season. Ruskin came out on top, 20-14. Next came Shawnee Mission South and the Cardinal Red and Gold players took to the road and downed the Raiders, 19-6.
