What's my next class? Do you know where 247 is? I'm gonna' be late! These were familiar remarks which rang through the halls of OPHS last fall as the 600 sophomores started a new experience in a new setting. Although there was plenty of room for bodies in the Oak Park building, there was a stack-up for locker space. The return to Cen- tral Standard Time in October made the late- late afternoon classes seem longer and the hun- ger pains deeper. A student committee with faculty appointed advisers held long meetings with long discus- sions to select and present for student approval choices for the school's colors, mascot, and emblem. Oak Park and North Kansas City High School transferees to Winnetonka next year cast ballots, too. The Griffin, a mythological animal with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, was selected over the Wild- cat, the Roadrunner, and the Wolverine. Now we know who we are, commented a student, and suddenly it was significant to have identity. Cardinal red and gold were chosen for colors over black and silver, royal blue and bright red, and evergreen and gold. Highlights of sophomore life were the lift- ing of the dress code, making new friends, get- ting yearbook pictures taken, and going to the games and dances. But the most exciting fun was going to school March l on an 8 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. schedule in the new building with the red lockers and carpeted rooms and just get- ting home after a long visit at OPI-IS.
