' Winnetonkcfs A reflection of progress is the impressive Winnetonka High School building which hugs a Northland hill and overlooks the skyline of Kansas City, Mo. It was fifty-eight years ago, January of 1913, that a few visionary men, realizing the importance of education, formed the school district north of the river. In June of l9l3 the first school bond issue of 55,000 was passed in order to buy the site at Zlst Street and Howell to build a school. The building had two rooms for the two teachers, the eight elementary grades, and the first year of high school. The structure cost S3,922, and was named Kenneth School in honor of Mr. Kenneth DeWeese, an attorney who had helped the new school to get started. There were two other teachers in the District and two other schools, Glenwood District Number 73 and Harlem District Number 72. With four teachers, three buildings, and approximately thirty-two students, with twenty-one of them attending Kenneth School, the North Kansas City School District came into existence. In those early days, the kids came to school on foot for there were no sidewalks and the few streets were of dirt. It was January of l9 l 3 that the Interurban Line started running. One line went to St. Joseph, Mo., and the other, the Excelsior Springs line, ran near by Winnetonka High School's location. The Winn name was familiar in this vicinity. Miss Mary Winn, realizing the importance for better transportation in the area, donated land for the interurban right-of-way and also enough land for a double- siding. The men building the line camped on her farm and she allowed them to leave their equipment on her land. When it was time to name the interurban stops, the construction superintendent would go up the line giving them names. One night, gathered around a campfire on Miss Winnis farm, he and the workers invited her tojoin them and help name the stop, which is the approximate locus of the present I-35 and Brighton exit, The men had already decided the stop should be named in Miss Winn's honor, and wished her approval. Several names beginning with Winn were suggested. One was Winn Forest, but when one man .. suggested Winnetonka, everyone immediately agreed this should be the name. It was in 1968 that the time arrived for naming the new high ... . Dr. R. Doolin selected a committee to submit names to the Board of Education. On the committee were Dr. Dan Kahler, principal of Oak Park High Schoolg Dr. Robert C. Howe principal of North Kansas City High Schoolg and Student Council Presidents .Jack Beers of OPHS and Mike Fain of NKCHS. The com- mittee, after being driven to the site of the new building by Dr. Doolin, nominated Royalview, Hilltop, Hilldale, and Winnetonka as appropriate names. The latter was favored because of the romantic Indian sound and the positive beginning of the name, WINnetonka. The Board announced in October of 1968 that the name of the third high school in the North Kansas City School District would be Winnetonka. Today, 1971, exemplifies the growth of the area north of the Missouri River. It is representative of visionary citizens interested in the finest educational facilities for its youth. The passage in November of 1967 ofa 6 million dollar multi- project bond issue made the school a reality. The building at 48th and Topping would be builtat an estimated cost of a 4.7 million dollars and would have a capacity for 2,000 students. Opening of the school in 1970 was delayed for strike-plagued labor felt differently. Oak Park School shared its building with Winnetonka on a split-shift schedule until March 1, 1971, when the move was made to the new building. Students from OPHS started classes before the sun rose, and WHS students were in classes after the sun set. Today, 1971, students come to school via school busses or drive their own cars, which many have learned to operate in a course called Driver Education. Where once there were cow paths and dirt roads, a modern highway system makes suburban living the way to go. Once one was able to hear the whistle of the interurban, but now one hears the whizzing of cars on the near by freeway. - In 1926, when the present North Kansas City High School building was dedicated, a teacher remarked, '6If this is a dream, I hope I never wake upf' Today, l97l,just forty five years later, in reflecting upon the progress of the educational facilities and opportunities offered by the North Kansas City School District to the present generation, this remark is still apropos. k ' f 5 4 1 1 1 i f 1 1 1 f i 'IIllllllllll 'T'l1lllllll lllf'5ll -C'.f1LIf1 f1l W-1 -r-'-N-sv'--1'me1-mv-va-ffm--rx-:Gia-mfpgfxg-5-:'L-4 ?1r'1-fffvm-ii-': ag---17:-1-1'-fly,-Qgeqv-'wavy-'fn-ax-4-Q-gfvff-rw--:f4-5-srrf.-wg1:-ff:Qg-,-gv-rf:-,nv--Qfngvfef--1-.:y,v.--5:11,-v-wgfw--by11-,M .'f,q-,--mpf.--, n. . Today, I wel- come you to Winnetonka High School and con- gratulate you on being this new school's first class, was Supt. R. B. Doolin's greeting to the Class of 1973 at their first assembly last fall. Dr. Doolin has been superintendent of the North Kansas City School District since 1955. In May of 1970 he was presented a Citation for Distinguished Service to Education by his fellow alumni of the College of Education at the Uni- versity of Missouri-Columbia. The Citation recognized Dr. Doolin as a leader of public school administration at the local, state, and national levels and for his commitment to the improvement of American life through educa- tion. district moves forward The North Kansas City School system has grown to include 22,840 students: 1,096 certi- fied staff members, and 751 noncertified em- ployees. The budget for the school year, approved in August of 1970, was for 519,937,680 This amount did not include estimated bond building expenditures. The 1970-71 building program included completion of the strike-delayed Winnetonka High School and the opening in August of 1970 of the West Englewood Elementary School. Ad- ditions and improvements were made to several other schools. The Board of Education accepted a com- bined low bid in January of 1971 for the con- struction of the Child Study Center, the first of its kind in the country, and the bus transporta- tion facility. Preliminary plans were made for a fifth junior high school to be opened Septem- ber of 1972. Dr. R. B. HOPING lT'S FOR A SHORT TIME, Dr. Sovereign posts directions in the OPHS building. principal a'r. sovereign polishes plans as second year approaches I am thoroughly convinced that we can offer a top quality educational program to our kids, Dr. Keith M. Sovereign said last fall about starting a new high school in a borrowed building with six hundred sophomores. And, he added, You might say we feel that we are visiting very good friends at Oak Park. The extended visit ended March 1 when the transi- tion was made to'Winnetonka's new building. Dr. Sovereign was named principal of Winnetonka High School in May of 1970. He had been an assistant principal at North Kansas City High School. A graduate of Joplin High School, Joplin, Mo., he received his bachelor's and mas- ter's degrees from the University of Missouri. His Ed.D. was received from the University of Arizona. During the year plans for 1971-1972 were finalized for a flexible class schedule. Planning team-taught semester courses required meet- ings and work by Dr. Sovereign and the staff. In January the program and schedule was ap- proved by the State Department of Education. Developing a new high school required Dr. Sovereign to spend much of his time deciding upon equipment and classroom arrangements in the new building, planning the movegand selecting a full staff for Winnetonka's second year with a projected enrollment of 1,700 students. 5 staff Iimilca' winnelonka faculty lays academic foundation lt was a different year, to say the least, was a staff member's opinion when asked his reaction to teaching until 6:40 p.m. And just when one had learned to adjust to the afternoon schedule and a snack at 2:30 p.m., the move to the new building called for a readjustment to a regular schedule. The thirty-four teachers, two administra- tors, four secretaries, and the nurse joined the sophomores in giving birth to a school. Staff members served on committees and as ad- visers to clubs and organizations. With a small faculty, closeness was evident as departments worked together planning the curriculum and schedule for the coming year. Under make- shift conditions, organization was evident as school functioned smoothly. A faculty moving committee was formed and the last weekend in February the transi- tion was made from Oak Park to Winnetonka. Teachers and students soon became acclimated to their new surroundings and after six months in a borrowed building, put down grass roots in Winnetonka Country. . What's my next class? Do you know where 247 is? I'm gonna' be late! These were familiar remarks which rang through the halls of OPHS last fall as the 600 sophomores started a new experience in a new setting. Although there was plenty of room for bodies in the Oak Park building, there was a stack-up for locker space. The return to Cen- tral Standard Time in October made the late- late afternoon classes seem longer and the hun- ger pains deeper. A student committee with faculty appointed advisers held long meetings with long discus- sions to select and present for student approval choices for the school's colors, mascot, and emblem. Oak Park and North Kansas City High School transferees to Winnetonka next year cast ballots, too. The Griffin, a mythological animal with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, was selected over the Wild- cat, the Roadrunner, and the Wolverine. Now we know who we are, commented a student, and suddenly it was significant to have identity. Cardinal red and gold were chosen for colors over black and silver, royal blue and bright red, and evergreen and gold. Highlights of sophomore life were the lift- ing of the dress code, making new friends, get- ting yearbook pictures taken, and going to the games and dances. But the most exciting fun was going to school March l on an 8 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. schedule in the new building with the red lockers and carpeted rooms and just get- ting home after a long visit at OPI-IS. Winnetonka Ruskin Winnetonka St. Pius X football grjfin teamwork produces 8-2 reeora' for first season I felt that it was a good start for a new school, and next year will be a new challenge. The biggest secret to our success was our team balance, remarked Mr. Dan Stanley, head football coach, about the first football season for the new Winnetonka High School. Assistant coaches were Mr. Mel Wieland, Mr. Don Talbott, Mr. Benny Cain, Mr. Carroll Townsend, and Mr. Jim Shepherd. Student managers were Brad Meyer, Tom Chapin, and George Rocha. Since only sophomores were enrolled at WHS, opposition was against sophomore teams. About 80 boys reported for practice in August. Home games were played on North Kansas City High School's field. The Vikings of Shawnee Mission West came across the river for the first encounter and downed Winnetonka, 22-20. But the Griffins bounced back the next week and upset the Ray- town South Cardinals, 8-6. gryffins take trojans In the first game away from home, the squad traveled to Park Hill and brought home a decisive 55-16 victory over the Trojans. The Celtics of O'Hara High School were next to come under the spell of Winnetonka, and were dealt a 20-8 loss at the Northtown stadium. The next week the game was played at Leels Summit where a 19-6 win was posted by the Griffins. Coach Stanley's team smashed the Shawnee Mission East Lancers next, 23-6, at home and the winning ways of the team continued. How- ever, the Ruskin Eagles spelled trouble the next week, and Winnetonka was dealt its sec- ond loss of the season. Ruskin came out on top, 20-14. Next came Shawnee Mission South and the Cardinal Red and Gold players took to the road and downed the Raiders, 19-6. It was an away-from-home game, although it was played at the Northtown stadium against NKC. As the Hornets and Griffins took to the field, old rivalries were renewed and junior high friendships forgotten. The Hornets took the lead early in the first quarter, 13-0, and held it until the fourth quarter. On a pass play from Gary Patton to Steve Reusch, Winnetonka scored the winning touchdown with only 43 seconds left, and North Kansas City's sophomore team fell to Winnetonka, 20-13. Playing a highly-rated team, on the NKC field, Shawnee Mission North, proved to be a challenge. The Griffins led throughout the game, 7-6, until the fourth quartergwhen SMN executed a screen pass and scored a touchdown. With just 46 seconds left and the score 12-7, Joe Summers went over for a touchdown and the season ended for WHS with a 13-12 victory.
