The thinker contemplates the world and discovers himself. The football coach leads his teams away after the game is over. They discover the relief of a conclusion. Perhaps they uncover the exhilaration of a victory or the discouragement of a defeat. The players in the game experience emotional peaks, tired bodies, and dirty uniforms. But they also feel the understanding of a coach who empathizes and excites. Those students who call themselves seniors become acutely aware of this process as they live in 1970. 4 5 6 Like the astronauts who have taken uncertain steps into space seniors and all students take uncertain steps into life. Will it be possible for us to discover peace? Will our future scientists come up with a discovery that will cure cancer? Can we discover creativity in a new hair style or in trying something different? Can't participation be a discovery for many? 7 I I 8 9 Karl Bolthouse Jim Boone Steve Butler Ellen Buttel 10 Sponsored by Joan Boomgarden's School of Dance. Perks, vice president; P. Slocum, president; S. Merchant, secretary; N. Fry. STANDING โ€” R. McGee, M. Mitchell, M. Merchant, M. Fry, A, Gambrel, D. Hazzard, P. Butler, B. Benson. All year, aS in pas7 years, the Student Council has striven to improve the atmosphere of the school, both in stC dent-student and in stuDent-teacher relationships. Thยฃy have accomplished this through their ma Vy projecTs. Their main project this year was the student lounge โ€” a blessing to all students. The lounge allows any junior or senior to leave the Confines Of study hall and retreat to the blissful atmosphere of this room where the jOke box is usually playing and food and drink are always ple Vtiful โ€” the very necessities of life to a teenager. Another project tackled annually by the counc l is Homecoming Week. This encourages aZ.1 members of the school, students and teachers alike, to join together and show their school spirit. It includes such activities as Student Color Day, Teacher Color Day, Royalty Day, the Pow Wow and the Homecoming Game and Dance. This year's theme for the semiformal dance was Autumnal Equinox. As in other years, it was attended and enjoyed by many and the school spirit didn't seem to be dampened any by the loss of the all-important Homecoming Game of the night before. Sponsored by Student Council. Some of the Student Council members enjoy the facilities of the lounge. SEATED โ€” L. Cooksey, N. Wheeler, M. Fraley. ROW 2 โ€” C. Richmond, Miss Niemeier, adviser; B. National Thespian Society The National Thespian Society is an educational honor and service organization of teachers and students, established for the advancement of dramatic arts in the secondary schools. It is an โ€œhonor or recognition society in the sense that students are granted membership for having performed meritorious work in dramatic arts and have met the membership qualifications and standards of their respective troupes. Brenda Spielman was selected the first semester of her senior year for membership because of her active participation in drama as a sophomore and junior. Seniors selected the second semester because of their participation in dramatic activities during high school were Ed Pagel, Karl Bolthouse, Bruce Carlson, Steve Butler, and Cyndi Klinger. 36 An Evening of One Acts THE BIRTHMARK THE BIRTHMARK was presented at district and sectional drama contests. Unilateral Intervention is Debate Topic Of course Congress should prohibit unilateral intervention in foreign countries. At least this is the reply given by the affirmative teams; but to complicate matters, the negative teams never agreeO. So, one result concurring from this difference in opinions is that other schools have become better acquainted with Winnebago's meThods of argument. Also, this yยฃar brought forth Winnebago's third debate tournament. 38 SEATED - S. Williams, D. Perks, L. Fay, K. Bolthouse. STANDING - D. Johnson, B. Benson, S. Bolthouse. E. Winneb is a Group Effort This year has proven to be one of the most difficult for the Winneb staff. Working under the burden of a past debt and a shortage of staff, they have cont nued with the goal of making the best Win Veb ever. They have devoted much of their leisure time to this goal iN hopes that the studfnt body will find this year's annual memorable. SEATED - G. Hinklin, S. Bolthouse, assistant editor; D. Librarians Assist Students Windian Staff Strives to Meet Goal The Windian staff's goal this year has been to publish enough newspapers so that Winnebago's students will be allowed to have a newspaper next year. In the past years, there has been much apathy towards the paper. This year, under the constant guidance of the adviser, Mr. Bruning, the editor, Judy Becker, and the assistant editor, Debbie Hamburg, the students who are interested have been able to put out good newspapers. Hopefully, enough were printed so that the staff may cont nue to operate in the year 1970-71. Even though the editor and assista Vt editor occupy the most important offices of the newspaper, they would be helpless without the aiD of the other staff members. Among them are the business manager, Karla Kirby; photographer, Lynne Hilpert; Vari-typist, Pat McMahon; lay-out, Gayle Clikeman; and the reporters โ€” all of whom are a valuable part of any newspaper. The Wind ans printed this year were enjoyed by all, especially the Christmas issue which was printed in red and green ink. It tAkes a lot of work to put out a newspaper โ€” something many people don't realize. The staff may run into a lot of problems before the paper is printed but, to them, the fi Vished Windian is well worth all of their anxieties. ROW 1 โ€” L. Hilpert, B. Johnson, D. Sanders, G. Spanish Club Means Competition 51 'That's not even Spanish music!โ€ The time seem went too fast, but didn't make me forget one year with you in the United States. It has been so fortunate coming to Winnebago in-state of some other places. The time is limited but not my enjoyment. It's very first time leaving my homeland, Chainot . . . Thailand. But now I got to go back to my beloved country. Even though I have leaving you now, I was still have the enjoyable experience to remember. I lot of things seem to be different. It take quite a bit time understanding them. The more learning, the more knowledges. I know much enough to talk to the other people haven't been to America. One year among the warm greeting of American is one of the unforgetable impression. I got a lot of new experience, especially snow and the cold weather which I needed to enjoy them before. Thailand with three seasons, summer, winter and monsoon. We don't get much trouble with the cold weather. The loud of colorful never know snow. I can tell many things about snow, how pretty it is and also how freeze I was. From the Boy School to the United school didn't bother my anyway. School going so well with a little bit trouble and worry in the very first semester. I was so proud with my graduation in the United States. I really enjoy to be the friend of you and glad to be one of Indians, too. Our school is small but great with friendlyness. I'll try to remember all of you. This book will pass to some of my friends and I get to tell them how nice you are!!! One year with you, help you knowing and understanding more about my country, to same way I try yours. Remember! Welcome to my beautiful country. I'll be so glad to meet you there. At the time of unhapiness for a leaving, I would like to say Good Bye to all of you. Not to be forgotten is Miss Niemeier our first and last English teacher in high school. Not that we didn't like English but she managed to get hold of most of us for Freshman and Senior English. One of the new teachers in 69-70 was Miss McLaughlin but this didn't prevent her from getting involved in Winnebago's activities. It was also found that she is fond of spelling tests every Friday, but this wasn't so bad as her addiction to reading themes โ€” which we had to provide. Our Ag teacher was really a born leader. Here Jessie and Judy fix a treat for the class. 98 Sponsored by Blackrock Morgan Farm. The TMH classmates show competition in one of their several relays. EMH, TMH Try to Please EMH and TMH are abbreviations for Educable and Trainable Mentally Handicapped. These classes are composed of primary and secondary children with whom Mrs. Hamburg and Mr. LaBrant work. The students work on a wide variety of school work, depending upon their ability. EMH children are more advanced than the ones in TMH; therefore, they do everything on a higher level. They all work with the basic subjects: reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic, even though they're on a modified level. They also work with other devices such as work sheets and mind-challenging games. Having these classes in the high school is a great asset to the students of Winnebago, especially those in FTA. Any student may volunteer himself as an aide to these children during his free periods. For the high school students, this is a great opportunity to get first-hand experience in working with the children. This is particularly helpful if the student wishes to work in a career which deals with children and it is also useful for preparing for one's own children. The aides are also beneficial to the children. The children learn not to be shy around others and to talk to people besides their parents and teacher. They also learn that each individual responds to things quite differently. Practically everyone loves children and these aren't really different from any others. They're still likable, friendly, understanding, and need friends. This they show by greeting people in the hall as they pass. Probably everyone in the school knows at least one person in either Mr. LaBrant helps the older students do their the EMH or TMH class โ€” if not personally, then by sight or wor by name. The younger children show pride in their ability to read. Sponsored by WARC. 99 And so in 1970 we discover how to accept defeat. We begin to understand loss as a reality. We even discover that there are some things we can't understand โ€” why the Varityper made the mistake, why we receive funny looks from our teachers. Sleep is a pleasant discovery. And the company of others awakes happiness in us, for we share our lives. 102 Within books secrets are hidden; we open them, read them and find them. In math we are confronted with problems that have solutions โ€” we must discover them. Coordination becomes a process that must be worked at, but also discovered. The skill may be innate but it must be found and brought out. However, in this whole process of discovery we have guides โ€” our teachers. They are there to let us have a glimpse of what we could find in 1970, the YEAR OF DISCOVERY. 105 OONNA AMMERMAN FHA 3.
